However after you do her loyalty mission and based on how she talks to you about other squadmates, I don't think it's all "need to know". Personally I believe they get a lot closer. They don't bare their souls or swap life stories but they do confide in each other over current personal matters. That last part's just personal extrapolation, how I choose to look at it.
She definitely opens up a lot more, especially during her LM mission. And the end of that mission actually tell quite a lot of how much Kasumi seemed to appreciate and listen Shep. After all she had just got back something, which is last reminder from her lost lover and she will destroy/let Shep destroy it, if he/she asks about it. Sure this is mainly just gaming decision, but I would like to think that there is more behind of it than that.
Also one of the reason, why there are no swapping life stories or anything like that between Shep and Kasumi is that you can only listen Kasumi and that there is no real dialogue between them. I believe that if Kasumi would have had normal dialogue options like all other squadmates (except Zaeed), then she would have become one of the closest person to Shep and there would have been option to hear a lot more of personal stuff from Kasumi. But as she was DLC, this didn't happen.
No idea what Kasumi would be involved in otherwise or what her mission would entail. We can speculate a lot about her but we have very little concrete data. It could be anything. It could even be a boat!
Well one possibility is that you would need Kasumi's help to steal or get some information or even some Prothean artifacts or like that from someplaces, where using brute force is not the best option (at very least getting in, like it was in Kasumi's LM). Now what makes this mission or idea viable for ME3 and it's war plot, is that this information/artifact/or something else could be important in order to defeat Reapers or just get some alliances with other races or something else like that.
Then second option is of course the Greybox as no matter if you destroyed or keep it, I'm sure some people will want to find/get it, which means thatr Kasumi will need help in some point.
