Wow I really do agreee with you so much on that.
I see here and there people who think that Garrus doesnt bring enough to the storyline because hes not at the head of some big organisation or representing his entire race. Actually I find that refreshing and I believe it makes its part of what makes him so reliable for Shepard. Just like him/her, hes facing unexpected events and has to rise to the occasion and make tough choices. Its a bit of a reactionary position but its the same as the player (something happens, you react to it). im not surprised Garrus is the best bro for many many Shepards because hes really there for them instead of bringing his own agenda. 'Questgiver' characters and 'people with a mission' are very important in a RPG but so are the ones the players can relate to , characters who share the player situation and surprise at how events unfold. I dont think theres many of them in ME. There was the VS in ME1 but he/she bails on you in ME2.
So Garrus really has a 'niche' role in the ME series and hes doing it pretty well
And how often are you actually going to come across a representative for an entire race, or someone with links or connections to people of that nature? It's a ridiculous expectation. "Well, ya, we need help from the turians but Garrus isn't some annointed Prince amongst their tribes, so oh wells. CRITICAL MISSION FAILURE."
I always thought Liara's character arc suffered from the problem of being a little too convenient for the plotline in ME1. She just happens to be a main antagonist's daughter, and an expert on Prothean lore, and (despite having no logical reason to be a skilled fighter) a skilled fighter. (NOTE - this is not a character bash, honest!)
...that was meant to convey something about Garrus and how he's just perfect the way he is - pretty much anonymous & (gasp!) inconsequential in the grand scheme of turian life. Like, you know, most everyone. No need to slap unnecessary titles on him by forcing him into some sort of miltary role that he doesn't need.
On the point of Kaidan VS Garrus - those two will never fight, ladies. It might be nice to fantasize an all out brawl over your affections, but both characters just are not that kind of man and that's why we love 'em! Honestly, the only LI's I see getting in a physical OR verbal fight over Shepard is Jack and...anyone, really. I definitely would like a scene, though, where you over-hear Garrus saying something along the lines of "Look, Kaidan...I don't want there to be any awkwardness between us. I know what you and Shepard had, or at least I can guess at it, but just know that I promise to take care of her - for the both of us."
