Wow I really do agreee with you so much on that.

I see here and there people who think that Garrus doesnt bring enough to the storyline because hes not at the head of some big organisation or representing his entire race. Actually I find that refreshing and I believe it makes its part of what makes him so reliable for Shepard. Just like him/her, hes facing unexpected events and has to rise to the occasion and make tough choices. Its a bit of a reactionary position but its the same as the player (something happens, you react to it). im not surprised Garrus is the best bro for many many Shepards because hes really there for them instead of bringing his own agenda. 'Questgiver' characters and 'people with a mission' are very important in a RPG but so are the ones the players can relate to , characters who share the player situation and surprise at how events unfold. I dont think theres many of them in ME. There was the VS in ME1 but he/she bails on you in ME2.

So Garrus really has a 'niche' role in the ME series and hes doing it pretty well ^_^

And how often are you actually going to come across a representative for an entire race, or someone with links or connections to people of that nature?  It's a ridiculous expectation.  "Well, ya, we need help from the turians but Garrus isn't some annointed Prince amongst their tribes, so oh wells.  CRITICAL MISSION FAILURE."

I always thought Liara's character arc suffered from the problem of being a little too convenient for the plotline in ME1.  She just happens to be a main antagonist's daughter, and an expert on Prothean lore, and (despite having no logical reason to be a skilled fighter) a skilled fighter.  (NOTE - this is not a character bash, honest!)

...that was meant to convey something about Garrus and how he's just perfect the way he is - pretty much anonymous & (gasp!) inconsequential in the grand scheme of turian life.  Like, you know, most everyone.  No need to slap unnecessary titles on him by forcing him into some sort of miltary role that he doesn't need.

On the point of Kaidan VS Garrus - those two will never fight, ladies.  It might be nice to fantasize an all out brawl over your affections, but both characters just are not that kind of man and that's why we love 'em!  Honestly, the only LI's I see getting in a physical OR verbal fight over Shepard is Jack and...anyone, really.  I definitely would like a scene, though, where you over-hear Garrus saying something along the lines of "Look, Kaidan...I don't want there to be any awkwardness between us.  I know what you and Shepard had, or at least I can guess at it, but just know that I promise to take care of her - for the both of us."

If anything, I think it more likely that Kaiden will be fighting with Shepard instead. She's the one "cheating" on him.
It would be curious to see Garrus' opinion on the matter. But I think it'll be closer to the love triangle confrontation you go through in ME1.

Since Kaidan is a Staff Commander AND a Spectre (which is above Shepard), he has all the right to talk her down. So, ya, I think if Shep cheats on Kaidan with Garrus, Kaidan will go to Shepard instead.

Hopefully it can all be resolved with a best-friends-threesome.

About the Kaidan-Garrus reaction

I have the feeling that Kaidan will take it to out on Shep herself rather then on Garrus. You know how there is some parent who would make a big scene if their child comes home late and there are some who will give you the 'I am disapoint in you' look. Well I think Kaidan will go for the second one. And it will probably hurt a bit cause I hate to disapoint. On the other hand I hope Garrus will react more hotheadly if Shep goes 180 on him. He would probably do something stupid and feel sorry after but at least it would be in character.

Kaidan (of all people) trying to use his military status to intimidate Shep is a bad idea from the start but doing it in a personal conversation about their mutual history... I dont know many Shepards who would accept that, even the most by-the-book paragon.

I think Kaidan still views Shepard as his superior even though he probably outranks her now.

They are both so laid back and mature that I can't imagine any sort of yelling or major confront ation happening. I think the worst that may happen would be that Garrus mentions that he was there for Shepard when Kaidan had left her and accused her of being a traitor.

But I think they would go to Shepard and ask her to choose.

It would be nice if the VS would disagree in different choices I make throughout the game.

At least I would start to respect them more and it would be interesting to see if/how they've changed during the years.

The VS disagreeing with Shep would certainly make sense. After all, he/she chose his own path on Horizon, now he/she has to own up to it. But what I would find hard to see is the VS pulling ranks on Shepard.

Garrus should also disagree with Shep if he  thinks its for the best. I wanna see him hold his ground against a very pro-human Shepard.

Since it's slow I'll take the time for a random interjection!

I always thought, especially in context with a femShep who plans on romancing him, Garrus's minor little comment in Mass Effect 1 to General Septimus ("This is pathetic! What could a woman do to put you in this state?") would be really cute for a reference/follow-up in Mass Effect 3.  Something where his father or such could comment on why he's throwing himself foolishly into danger for some human woman.  Probably not gonna happen, but I would certainly love it.  :D

I really hope we get to see a decent amount of turians in ME3.  It was actually a bit odd how Garrus was rather mum on turian info in ME1 and 2, whereas Tali/Liara was an info dump on quarians/asari.  I don't even know if we'll be landing on Palaven at this point, what with it already being taken over by the Reapers by the time we arrive.

I had completely forgotten that little statement. :o

OK, I'd love to see a romanced Garrus get to revisit that litle snark. Heck, if I ever do get any Garrus fic written, *I* may revisit it. *evil grin and Shepard knuckle-crack*

And @ BasementCat - D'aaaaawwwwww that's just what my Thursday AM needed earlier. :)

This, would be highly amusing to see the reference in ME3 :D

Are Saren/Nihlus fanfic scarce? Can't seem to find as many of them as Garrus/Shep fanfics O:

Hmm. i also forgot that statement.... Oh Septimus.... you were so awesome.

and Saren/Nihlus? did someone mention my favorite pairing in the world? um, a bit. there are tons of really good ones on Masskink meme on LJ. I'll send you some in a note, if you want. also, Olivia has written some of the best Saren/Nihlus that I've ever read...... :D

I'm a Saren/Nihlus shipper like crazy, so I go nuts for this stuff.

The Saren/Nihlus pairing is more or less fanon now, It's a nice pairing and they are two interesting characters, there's a lot of good stuff out there. And yes, of course lady olivia's stuff is brilliant, she has some great short stories on fanfic.net, a lot of really good Saren/Nihlus stuff to.

I don't go on the kink meme as much as I'd like to, sometimes I just don't have the time but when I do it seems like that for every garrus/femshep, saren/nihlus, garrus/manshep, there's at least 1 femshep/Thorian or Saren/Sovereign.

Shipping people is fun though, I'm thinking Techno Turian and Niftu Cal. Then maybe Bob Geldof will show up, it's still a work in progress...

Somehow, I can totally imagine Shepard saying that line if Garrus pulls a Legolas.
