No Shepard Without Vakarian: Garrus Love and Turian Discussion
#2626

There's been quite a bit of moaning in other threads about the possibility of Bioware 'perverting' straight characters to appease fangirls.
Hmmmm, we don't know much about Garrus' love life apart from his romance with FemShep (if initiated) and the reach and flexibility thing.
The stupidest thing I've heard in regards to reach and flexibility is someone claiming that since Garrus admitted to having a one night stand in the past that proves that Turians as a whole aren't a monogamous race.

I don't care about S/S romance so long as they don't change the characters to do it.

and i could see it with Garrus... how does it not fit his character? so you're telling me that a normal military dood can't be gay? what is "homosexual"? why is there a "type" for that?
Edit: apologies if that sounds d*ckish and self rightious. however. I'm sick of people saying "oh this person or that person isn't the type to be gay" cause ANYONE could be.
and i'm gonna follow that up with something that's been mentioned in this discussion before.... i can see turians not really having a "gay" vs "straight" .... not being so strict in that capacity, like us humans are. its a whole different universe out there, and who's to say that there are gender based things like that anywhere?

If you don't want s/s romance then dont initiate the s/s options in game.

Yeah, did Dumbledore come across as gay to anyone in the books and movies? Well, doesn't matter how he came across to the reader/movie viewer, because gay is what he was.
As to the Turian military, didn't Garrus say that they didn't really give a frak what its soldiers got up to behind closed doors as long as it didn't interfere with the mission?
On another topic, this is a bit silly, but you know what Garrus said about some women liking guys with scars? Should Garrus be hit on by a female Krogan in third game?

Uh, duuuuuh?
If Hitler is a bad person, but I decide not to read anything about him, does that make him not a bad person? If I don't initiate an S/S with Garrus, that doesn't make him straight.
Mass Effect puts character first and I don't see how Garrus could be gay. James Vega, Kaidan, Liara, and Kelly seem like the kind of people who fit that bill. Some don't.

I KNOW lots of people are saying don't initiate those options, but if you can't tell what is going to make you hit on your squadmates you're kind of up a creek without a paddle.

You're seriously comparing the possibility of Garrus not being straight to Hitler? Can I have some of what you're smoking?
Who the frak even cares if a character's not straight? Pretty sure my FemShep wouldn't care.

You're indirectly asserting that genocide is just as wrong as homosexuality. Simply ridiculous.
Now, I'm not going to restate my opinion on the matter as most here already know what it is.
Take care, everyone. Please, stay on-topic and be respectful.

Just a random thought. I love Garrus' side-view.
This thread has completely corrupted me. I'm totally into Turians now.

I wanna offer my 2 credits to some points brought up here
-Garrus bi : I dont see it. I try to. Really i do, but i just dont see it :/ I dont see it in alot of characters actually. Kai, jacob, nor joker. Especially not Thane. Besides, BW said they were bringing in a NEW person for the S/S romance for male shep. Read it on someone's twitter. My guess: Its gotta be Vega XD
-Kai "vs" Garrus: I agree with what some of the posts saying how some ppl dont want to see these two at each others throats >.> Theres so much more going on and Shep doesnt need some kind of telenovela/MMA match going on in her ship.
This hundred times over. Though I think that while, yes, Kaiden will be bringing this whole "cheating" situation up mostly with Shep than Garrus - we can't rule out that there wont be moments where the 2 of em will be talking about it. Whether its actually arguing, or just.... discussing with huge tension, [both?] will be a mystery. Most likely this will be the case regardless. Garrus can be confrontational when it matters....especially when regarding things that are of extreme importance to him. How he will handle Kaiden trying to supposedly get "back" with Shep is something up for debate. The confrontations will match the characters. For Ex. Ash - Jack romance will probably be chaotic. So will Ash - Miranda. Ash - Tali.....will be interesting. I doubt crazy, but still some drama of course.Sialater wrote...
Uh, no thanks. My Shepard doesn't have time for testosterone contests. (Or whatever its equivalent in turians.) She'd kick them both off the Normandy and tell them she'd see them after the Reapers are dead.
I never romanced Kaiden so I dont have to worry about such a thing. I want to focus on the romance b/w Garrus & Shep when she has some moments to rest on the normandy and what not. THAT is something I want to see. Im not up for focusing on the growing argument/tension b/w Garrus & Kaiden and have it going on until near the very end of the game for it to be settled. I'll pass.
And yes - its been confirmed by Casey that this whole "Love triangle" drama will be settled very late in the game at one of those "worst timing" moments. PFFFTTT Garrus is my Shep lover. Period.
Though i cant lie. I AM curious to see how Garrus handles the situation. But thats what youtube is for.
BTW all this Kai - Garrus triangle talk had me thinking about something last week. What are some expectations for the Liara - Garrus triangle? THAT could end up being VERY interesting. Especially since it already started in the LOTSB dlc [of course if its done post SM]. Liara: "And Garrus is doing more than calibrating the Normandy's guns!" XD
And hint that I dont like using "vs" between names. I feel this isnt some kind of battle or freaking deathmatch. Sure ok....its a battle for love, but still. I feel its like disrespecting both characters in some way that i cant put my finger on. It just doesnt sit right with me when I see the whole "vs" being put into the whole Love/cheating issue.

Bad on my part for using a metaphor that extreme. I wasn't comparing homosexuality and genocide because only 1 of them is a even bad thing. I'll use a better metaphor next time.
All I am saying is that Garrus shouldn't have 2 personalities/preferences depending on which Shepard you pick. If he isn't romancable by male Shepard, why would he be later on? Garrus seems like a straight character to me and I think he should be. I believe Vega was brought in for the S/S issue.

Are you implying that discussion on this subject is somehow taboo and not allowed? This thread is barely moving as it is, if we're to avoid "uncomfortable" topics then it will only continue to be unlively and less welcoming to people who have thoughts to share.

I actually have a line about that in the Fic I Will Never Finish Or Post, with Ash and Garrus trying to work out a demolition project together and having communication issues over her base 10 versus his base 6.
Oh, and while I don't think there's much to suggest that Garrus is interested in turian males (nothing to suggest he isn't, either, of course), there's quite a bit to suggest he isn't interested in humans, period. His attraction to Shep has nothing to do with his normal sexual orientation to begin with, Shep's gender at that point is utterly superfluous.
