Hey, the team of inept turians can consist of how many we like it to. It's not like we will all be playing at the same time and we can split our numbers over many teams if necesary. We can be flexible.

Edit: So you and I will be the Leeroys of the team then.

but wait....theres only up to 4 ppl in a team on co-op Posted Image I say we're like Gears of War. Multiple awesome squads of 4; each with an epic name

Exactly. And our specific teams will all have specific names. Like, Calibrations team, Measurement team, Adjustment team, Regulate team, and er... Standardize team.

I've only read the manga, I never watched the Fullmetal Alchemist anime, did they turn Edward into a pimp? That's an interesting peice of character development right there...

Oh no, I don't think we're designating the teams, we're talking about how sh*t we all are at video games which lead to disscussion about how we could form a team comprised entirely of completely inept turians running around the battlefeild like headless chickens.

You're free to join if you want, as is anyone I should suspect.

Have u by chance seen Fullmetal alchemist? If u have - ur like my new best friend on these forums XD I LOVE ANIME. An alchemist turian is the best thing ever!

Hm, yes. I wonder if the story of a steampunk world where the main character is an Alchemist and Alchemy is one of the world's leading sciences, was inspired by that other vastly popular story of a steampunk world where the main charcter is an Alchemist and Alchemy is one of the world's leading sciences... Possibly...

Um, you're free to I suppose. Although I don't actually have that much of an Irish Accent.

We could name them after turians in the game! Team Nihlus, Team Lorik, Team Saren, Team Kuril, Team Sidonis and of course, Team Garrus etc.

Come to think of it, it does sound a little bit like an Irish Gaeilc name. God I really want more turians with selective accents, an Irish Turian, a British Turian, an Australian Turian. God that would be brilliant.

There seems to be very few charcters in mass effect that aren't american, it's kind of weird. There was one (terribly voiced) frenchman in the colonist mission, and then there's miranda who I think is Australian. I don't think there's a single british character in the game, (apart for big ben sniper) nor are there any asian characters, and there's more Asians than there are Americans on the planet!

Other than that I can't think of any others off the top of my head. Even the Aliens are American... I want ethnic turians...

The thing you have to remember about the aliens, at least, is that there's a high probability you're hearing their voices through translators. So it would make no sense at all for them to have accents (because why would you give an accent to a translator?)

On the other hand, some quarians, like Tali, clearly do have an accent. My theory is that, in those cases, they're quarians who have actually bothered learning English. Since they're a nomadic people, they're also the one species for whom it makes sense to learn foreign languages, as they're bound to interact with a lot of other species during their Pilgrimage. Hence, you're hearing their actual voices, not translators. But the quarians that speak with no accent (Kal'Reegar, Daro'Xen, Han'Gerrel, etc.), those you're hearing through translators.

Of course, this also opens up a whole new can of worms in the form of "how can a translator still pick up the character's voice pitch, while translating the words?" My only answer so far: futuristic technology.

As for the humans who all speak American English, the explanation would be that English in general, and American English in particular, is the Human lingua franca in the future. It kinda already is today: most people I know who learn English as a foreign language pick up the American pronunciation by default. From personal experience, most of my teachers have been American, but I have a tendency to switch accents depending on who I'm talking to: if they're American, I'll switch to American pronunciation, if they're British, I'll switch to British. If I spend enough time around an Irishman or an Australian, for example, I will also start picking up their pronunciation. It's possible that other people do that too.

That being said, there are several ME characters with accents: Chloe Michel on the Citadel has a French accent, Yaroslev Tartakovsky (although they misspelled his first name) on Noveria has a Russian one, Samesh Bhatia on the Citadel has a Hindu or Pakistani one, Kasumi has a Japanese one. And if we're looking for varieties of English accents, then there's Miranda's Australian, as has been mentioned, and Donovan Hock's South African. I'm sure there are other examples, but those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Yes, but even then, there isn't a default american accent, yet there are other variations of american accents in the games, for example, Li on Noveria has a boston accent (I think). That's fairly differant from what is considered to be the typical American accent. I wouldn't say that that's something you can simply put down to futuristic technology, considering of all the possible variations a translator could pick, a boston accent seems kind of odd. Li's is the most distinctive one, but there are still aliens in the game that have accents that are far from the normal, monotone american accent. Lorik Qui'in for example, or Nihlus. Why would their accent not simply be the tone the translator is programmed to produce?

And even that doesn't explain why almost everyone is a white american, you have people like Samesh Bhatia of course, but you would expect there to be more chinese or central Asian people. (for example) Considering I'm fairly sure they outnumber the number of American people to a large extent.

Also, I'm not saying it has make sense, the game's filled with pseudo-science already. I just think the appearence of an Australian or an Irish Turian would bloody amazing. That's all.

That could simply be the effect of the directors telling the voice actor "just speak normally, you don't need to do any special accents". Beyond the game lore, you do also have to account for the fact that most of the game's VAs are American, and if you don't specifically tell them to produce an accent, they'll probably just use whichever one is natural to them.

Although I have to wonder, in that case, how they gave their instructions to the quarian VAs. Did they simply not tell them anything, and the ones that knew ME1 picked up their cue from Tali's VA, while all the other ones simply spoke in their normal voices?

I think the real explanation is that they simply didn't think things through to that extent. Posted Image

It's true that I'm surprised there are so few Asian or mixed Asian humans in the game, considering the current demographic trends.

Perhaps Quin, Nihlus and others had a couple of options of human accents and tones to choose from on their translator programs? And those we hear are the ones they personaly prefered.

I think this is how I would think the whole translator-accent thing would work. An indvidual could pick how their human/turian/asari/salarian/volus/etc. voice will sound from a wide variety of presets ("classy Palaven Turian", "Average Spacer Turian", "Taetrus Turian from the Northern Continent", "Urban Edessan Turian with a Bad Attitude", "Rural Turian from Thracia"....). The options would be broad and varied, with lots of downloadable variants made available on the extranet and explanations about how each comes across to other species.

Alternatively, or if they don't bother customizing, the translator program could just make a judgement call based on the individual's voice ("this human guy has a thick colonist accent, so the salarian equivalent would be like this...."). Probably then on top of all of that the translator leaves just a little quality of the original voice-type just to keep it authentic to the speaker (turian flange, drell gravelliness, salarian staccatto).

...Of course, they'll never, ever be able to explain away how they manage to get all of the future magic lip-synced. X3

Well you see, that's the real world you talking about right there, in thet context anything can be explained by saying "The developers wanted this to be exciting" or "The developers were running out of money" or "The developer didn't have enough time before the release window."

In this case I suppose it would be "American actors are cheaper."

Wow, never have a seen someone grasp at straws as soon as they enter the conversation. That's a pretty wild guess you've got there. So you think Lorik choose to sound suave, and you think Nihlus choose to sound like a super villain?

Wait a minute, what if Lorik isn't the suave, sultry bastard he's portrayed as? What if (without his translator) he sounds like Danny Dyer with throat cancer?!

I've been living a lie...

Makes sense to me that Lorik especially could be very particular about maintaining good appearances, right down to his voice. Here's a thought... if you don't like your own voice, you could set the translator to give you a different voice even to other speakers of your language.... ^_^

I'm guessing Team Garrus will have an unfair advantage in numbers, since, strictly speaking, most if not all of us are already 'on' that team.

LOrik vs Nikilus for me? Tough call. I like them both. (Don't hate me please! *grin*)

What about Team Gavorn, given that the guy is voiced by Gideon Emery (Fenris)? Any takers?  (I swear Gideon Emery could read an ingredient label and produce swoons. :) )

Maybe it's that renegade gig. Going against the grain is something our people know how to do pretty well, I dare say.
