Perhaps a better example would be lactose intolerance. Lactose is present in milk, and is broken apart by lactase, an enzyme. Lactose-intolerance is when lactase stops doing its job, and lactose doesn't get absorbed by your gut.
I think this could be similar to what the Mass Effect writers were going for. The lock and key don't match any more. If a turian eats something that he own body lacks the ability to digest (keep in mind, enzymes are disigned to 'fit' certain other molecules), maybe it does pass through. Or interact badly. Does that make any more sense? It's not a perfect explaination, but I think it's better than the allergy thing.
Or...a wizard did it.
Another thought:
http://en.wikipedia....iki/Thalidomide
If you scroll down to 'Mechanism' it's possible that thalidomide shoves itself into the DNA helix, which could casuse huge problems with gene expression. That's an extreme version, but like I said, that might have been what the writers were going for.
Yes, Bioware writers, maybe you should hire a science advisor? I can get my resume ready.

I can really understand how annoying those differences can be between a MEverse and real life to a scientist. Its like when a game treats history baddly for me (im a history/litterature teacher). All the nonsense about ****s and russians kinda pileup <_<
I work in forensics and I almost wrote a thank-you note to the writers for the Kasumi mission. "It's clean." "It's a plant!" I can't stand any of the CSI shows that are out there.

But additives and any other "strange" compounds out there that may or may not be related to proteins could be what is an issue. I can't imagine that all levo-based food is safe for all levo-based organisms, for example. Can a krogan eat everything an asari can without fear of any side-effects whatsoever? Probably, but I am sure evolution in a diverse galaxy wouldn't allow for absolute compatibility based on protein structure alone. That just seems.. too simplistic and doesn't seem to push the whole "the universe just loves diversity" agenda along. But again, it is science fiction and not science fact so we could easily overanalyse these minor details.
And yes, CSI is a terrible, terrible show for those of us that take biochemistry and biology somewhat seriously.

Other times, it gives me bad flashbacks to BioChem 221.
Me like pretty pictures better.

His face is modeled after Brandon Keener too, IIRC. I haven't played it though, so I can't be sure.
It is. Many of the models in that game were designed to look like the actors.
Keener never disappoints.

i am renting the game, but i have been distracted by mass effect 2 and news of me3. I cant stop looking at these forums about new info, like i am on disc 3 and just got 4 cases to go but i keep stopping. The game is good, but at times it can be boring

Gotta admit, of all things in ME scientific lore, the levo-dextro issues are among the most annoying (for me).I especially hate what this notion has done in the realm of fanfiction.
The way I took Mordin's advice was that he was telling Shepard not to swallow which would just rule out some sexual activities, not all of them. Ingest to me means taking in food. But, in cases of food allergies, is it possible to be just allergic to eating the food and not touching it? I'm not sure about that since I don't actually have any food allergies. But yeah, in my mind, Mordin was just telling her not to go down on a Turian. I could be wrong.
Ah yes. I hate this notion too. Kissing shouldnt cause some sort of allergic reaction. And referring to what I put in bold - Based on all his conversations about the LIs, Mordin is naughty. Thats exactly what he meant
Hence the awkward : "Ahem" cough, as he said that. lol.
To be honest I doubt ALL levo based being would contract some sort of reaction when coming into contact with someone dextro based. Allergies are a 50-50 fact. Some people react to something, while others dont. Some would react to something mildly, others could end up being more effective and harzardous. Sheps a strong woman. Hopefully shes part of the 50% that ISNT going to get a reaction X3 Some "experimentation" should be done to be on the safe side.

@luciusleathordt: Are you a fan of Tales of Symphonia? Your avy character looks ALOT like a character called Genis Sage ^__^
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No kidding. That feeling goes out to alot of fans. With all they say, and with so much emphasis on the matter, its no wonder Garrus is somewhat freaking out. ;3 Than again, theres of course more to that matter as to why he was nervous.Lady Olivia wrote...
Yeah, that's exactly how I feel about it.Eradyn wrote...
BW did a great disservice to their fans and the Mass Effect universe with their emphasis on the manufactured dextro-levo incompatibility issue. I see this misunderstanding all over fanfiction (to often irritating and story-ruining results) and on various forums and boards. And it keeps getting recirculated. It's really difficult to stem the tide of misinformation when BW itself is eager to spread it. =/ I really hope this is rectified in ME3.
I tend to not really think alot about it though - I love Garrus regardless. Shep will do anything to be with him - taking on the differences and all. No dextro - levo problem will stop her! Muah hahahahahaha!....HA!
Mine is quite short, I'm afraid. I only wish for more. More dialog. More tenderness. More details about Garrus' past. More questions for us to ask. More initiative on his part. More personal comments during missions. More banter with the rest of the companions. And so on.
I think DA2 was quite good in creating an atmosphere of companionship, between Hawke and their LI, but also among the party members. Remember the cutscenes in the beginning of every act, when you first visit a companion, they're always in company, and you get to hear something about their life behind the curtains. But DA2 also wanted more romance dialog. So back to my mantra: I wouldn't mind if everything in ME3 remained the same as in ME2, as long as there was simply more.
But in truth, I liked both ME and ME2 so much, and saw such evolution between them, that I totally trust the devs to come up with great stuff for ME3 on their own. Spirits, I can't wait.
-- More of the same Garrus, really. I liked the character, the dialogue, and the voice acting.
-- That the developpers don't "reinterpret" the character, like they did to Anders from DAA to DA2.
-- The possibility of a happy ending, if the player is diligent in the playthrough and makes reasonable choices.
Hmm. My Garrus wishlist for ME3... pretty much what has been said already...
+ I want him to remain the lovable renegade he is; someone who's willing to get his hands dirty in the name of justice. Stylishly, of course.
+ Looots of dialogue (romance/bromance talk, squad banter, mission specific remarks...)
+ Decent romance culmination scene. Nothing too explicit (there's always fanfiction....
+ No dying. Ever. Even if it would make a totally awesome tear-jerker scene.
So it's agreed! MORE!!!!
You all are right; ME2 romance scene faded to black all too soon. Literally fell forward on my face after their heads touched. THEY LEFT ME HANGING!!! JUST A FEW MORE SECONDS WAS ALL I WANTED!!!
.....uhmm....*quietly shuffles out after realizing she said that out loud*
OMG. I'm a BW fangirl if there ever was one, but if they do something like that to Garrus, I'll go the Anders way myself, if you catch my meaning.Sister Helen wrote...
Pfff, I couldn't care less about the xenophobes. But I prefer that the details remain in our imagination. Just think what the headbump has produced. I read somewhere that it's among the most depicted scenes in written and painted fanfiction ever. I wouldn't exactly mind more in that department, but I'm ok with the level of subtlety already present in ME2.luciusleathordt wrote...
and Chewin honestly? i would like it to be a possibility. it is in ME2.... Shepard can die. i dunno. I just think it adds to the 'realism' of the game. (yes i know. its sci-fi. but still) ya know? the tension and .. i think it makes it all the more worthwhile if there's a chance you can screw up.
or maybe i'm just a cynic and a hopeless romantic. (figure THAT one out) i like angst. in fact, i need angst like i need oxygen.
