No Shepard Without Vakarian: Garrus Love and Turian Discussion

Ill go with 'esthetically pleasing'.
Attractiveness goes far beyond the physical aspect. As far as a it can go for a fictional character id say his personality and the way it transfers in action is attractive/endearing.
Turians are very a beautiful alien concept to me as their 'culture' and features go well together (their predatorial side for example). Also that most of the human male characteristics remain very strong in Turians (just as Tali has lots of human female traits ) so id say Garrus is good looking to me.
But im probably very moderate compared to long time Garrus fans. All tastes are out there after all.

far as the body goes? i guess its the same thing that attracts me to tall, thin male humans? i like the primalness of them.
i dont think they're completely alien. they have the same basic muscle/bone structure as a human. lungs/heart/etc protected by a ribcage/carapace of sorts. their hips flare a bit more than a human, but are basically the same.
admittedly, a "real" turian might be different, if you think about it since they made all of the species basically humanoid to fit the CG model they had...
Edited to completely agree with outmane. aesthetics are based on personal preference.
and for a near TOTP and posted for posterity...

Oh yes, his physique is very masculine shaped (broad shoulders, narrow waist) someone else said athletic which is a good description. Apart from his face (which to me looks like a bloke wearing a mask) the rest of him is very human shaped, just like tali I guess. Add all the human mannerisms and swagger and it's easy

The way I look at it is more like race as opposed to a sexuality , obviously more different then lets say human ethnicity but turians drell, and asari and quarians are very human in their mannerisms , appearance and speech (plus thanks to mordin are biologically compatible) so it's like a different type or different looking kind of human rather than something completely different like a hanar or something (which ew no

I do get that reasoning myself yes, but, I must admit I've always seen it as breaking with typical sexualities. I'd be the last person to have a problem with it of course, but, it doesn't quite fit into what is assumed to be normal human sexuality. They are very human like yes, but, they are still alien.

We dont need to spark a debate but maybe that is a main contention point in finding Shep&Garrus relation believable.

True but even for some humans even another race of human being is very "alien" too, too a point where they don't get why on earth mixed couples exist and even that is not normal sexuality to them. Now if there was a hanar romance I agree with you because there's zero human attributes and they have indistinguishable sex . But it's pretty much supported so far that the 4 species I mentioned "work with" humans on a biological level meaning (apart from asari, no men ) work similarly to how human men and women work if that makes any sense. So sexuality can be easily transferred from species to species if they are similar enough. So if you like women only, being with a qurian or asari woman isn’t like being with another sex. If you like men, drell and turian men aren’t like being with a different sex either. And top that with the mannerisms, behaviour and human similarities in physique I treat it like a race thing.

I never said I didn't find it mostly my innitial line of questioning was meant to find out if the people who "Crush" on Garrus were based solely on his personality or if there was a sense of physical appeal there. I really do hope no one assumes I was trying to be rude, merely curious.

I don't think that it works that way, humans are all identifiably human. Looking at any racial group on earth one could easily conclude that they were all the same species. This isn't so with say the mass effect aliens. The aliens in Mass Effect work in a sense, but, Quarian's and Turians are so different that their fluids are toxic to humanity and vice versa. While I absolutely understand simply concept that a person who likes woman isn't going to go out and flirt with a male drell or something... I am saying that Xenophilia particularly in the mass effect universe will probably end up being clumped in the definition of Queer because it deviates with typical human sexuality.

I do not find this conversation offensive at all. Its pretty interesting.
My point was (i know it wasnt elaborated much) :
If you see the situation from the sexuality point of view, it is understandable to believe that we dont fully choose our sexual preferances. In that case, it isnt possible to be attracted to some species with entirely diffrent pheromones, etc (just like a gay man wouldnt be attracted to a woman, wether he likes it or not).
IIf you see it from a cultural/racial point of view, then one can develop an attraction for someone who did not fit his/her original beauty standards because he/she has feelings for that person (like interacial relationships).
As for the decisive answer to what the 'crush' is based on, im more on the personality side. I do find that Turians have an appeal. But so do many manga characters to me (the pointy chin, expressive eyes and the lean built) and Modigliani paintings (long necks, sad expressions). Its more of an aesthetic appreciation.

This is a complicated matter. If there were really aliens walking about, could there be sexual attraction? I have no idea. None of us do.AngelicMachinery wrote...

But I don't think that, when we play the game, we see Garrus or Thane or Tali as "aliens." We see them as people. That's how we relate to them.
If you look at it carefully, there isn't a single non-human trait you could assign to them, apart from the anatomy, and that's still rather humanoid as well. Tali must wear a suit, so what? Garrus has "a mask," so what? These properties don't dehumanize them - they're just quirks, like Miranda's genetic enhancements. Once you've "fallen for" their personality, you start liking their quirks too - and that's how an alien physique becomes attractive.
So my theory is that these romances work because the alien LIs are, in their essence, not alien at all.

OMG F*CK YES! Garrus is the sexiness. Nihlus is doubly so.
^this to put it bluntly, and I'm a male, creeped out yet? I wouldn't blame you...
Broad shoulders that round down to a narrow waist is what a lot of people find particularly appealing, kind of like the protoss from starcraft but a little less alien.
(Just in case anyone wanted a comparison and were too lazy to do a google image search)

Personality is certainly a massive part of garrus' appeal, but for me there is still a layer of attraction around the turians and the quarians. (I dig both, if you haven't caught on already, I'll screw anything as long as it's sentient)
It's the same attraction that I feel attracts us (or me at least <_<) to even the minor characters. (*cough* Nihlus *cough*) What exactly that layer of attraction is, well I'm not entirely sure, I'm sure some of you could ring off reasons as to why It's logically normal for me to find turians attractive, I just can't, it's like asking someone to explain why they're gay or why they're straight... (for me at least)
Again, you have every right to be creeped out by what I just said, I'll be hiding behind a flame shield if anyone needs me...

Yeah, that kind of screws with my know-them-to-love-them theory. Come to think of it, when I first played ME2 (and that was my first encounter with ME in general), I finished Garrus' recruitment mission and the moment the cutscene on the Normandy ended, I was on the wiki, looking up if he can be romanced.BubbleSauce wrote...
