Garrus was at least an ally of your canon Shep (judging by one of your earlier posts), right? I didn't think there were that many times when his comments would only work for friends and not allies, and it's probably possible to avoid those conversations or taking Garrus on those missions if you tried. The only times I can think of where it really wouldn't make sense is Garrus saying "just like old times" if Shep never recruited him... but even then, I guess you could just imagine that he's bitter. xD I've had no trouble finding allies-but-not-friends dialogue choices, but I don't know what's right for your Shepard. I could try to think of better solutions if you need help with specific conversations.
Also, about healing Garrus' trauma... I'm sure most of us want to help him through that, but that sort of thing doesn't happen right away. The loyalty mission helped give him closure, no matter which solution you choose, but it can't completely bring him peace. His team is still dead, and Garrus has a lot of guilt about that. I wish there had been a conversation about this in ME2, with Shepard talking to Garrus about losing teammates (because all Shepards have been through the same thing), but complete healing takes time. I guess we can only imagine what Garrus' distant future would bring. I hope he doesn't blame himself forever, though it wouldn't be unusual if he did.
I wouldn't tell you not to play your game a certain way, but if you do like Garrus' character and want to see his story play out with your canon Shep, I would suggest keeping him alive. If you want to see how Garrus being alive plays out with another Shepard first, then you could always replay your canon later if you want him alive.
Seriously, though...we'll find out in a month (or when the final game files leak) but for now I'm sticking to what I know in the verified leaks.
