That might be because many liked both characters, and do not want to imagine two of their favorite characters might have been less than friendly toward one another.  Do a youtube search for ME1 Garrus and Tali elevator conversations.  Puts the ME2 conversation more into perspective.

yeah, he was a COMPLETE jerk to X in ME1, but if the elevator
conversations are to be believed, they soften up to each other a bit by
the endgame.  Also, he and X were as close to bros with each other as
possible in ME2, even moreso if quest orders hadn't been changed and
lines hadn't been cut.  So it seems that Bioware intended to friend-ship
them as much as the fandom does anyway.  And the fandom
DOES friend-ship them pretty hardcore.

They became bestest bros in ME2 in my headcanon, anyway.

Maybe I missed some conversations; I know of the one where they're on the staircase in ME2, but it was still pretty nasty.  Are there others I'm missing? I don't recall there being ANY pleasant exchanges, much less friendly ones, in ME1 or ME2.  The fanbases' head-cannon friend-shipping aside.

There's a line she says if you mod the game to have her there for Garrus' mission.  She also makes a comment after Bailey says something, "Reminds me of a certain Turian we know."  That's all I can think of!

That's why my Femshep loves him <3  Although, it makes her want to punch him sometimes, especially when he was being all jerky to Tali in ME1 :3  I hope Shepard will response to squadmate bickering like Hawke does in Dragon Age 2.

But no, sorry guys, I just don't see it.  ME3, sure I can definitely see where they finally drop it and finally become friends, but definitely not seeing it during ME2/ME1. But...live and let live and Garrus plushies for everyone. ^^

Actually, Hawke didn't do a good job at all responding to squadmate bickering. I wanted to step in whenever Fenris or Anders was being mean to Merrill, but I couldn't.

We need more inter-squad EPIC FRIENDSHIPS than romances. I actually find X's interactions with Y (bringing in another codename here) to be my favourite inter-squad relationship in the game, and there's nothing remotely romantic about it.

****, well I couldn't resist and have read all about the possible X and Garrus romance. (Goddam spoilers will be my undoing.)

That one actually kinda makes some sense to me, even if it's a little out of the blue. X makes more sense than any of the other squaddies as far as I'm concerned (for reasons that would be spoilers). I mean, any of them would be random, but I guess X is slightly less random than most.

And we fans did demand squadmances, so yay? I'm looking forward to seeing it in-game.
