Ah, I see. Well personally I could care less about the LI's looks (because it's a videogame, they're going to look like they're made out of plasticine no matter what you do), but Bioware tends to write "attractive" characters in the same sorts of ways or just writes them really badly. I have no idea what they were trying to do with Jacob, but having Femshep act like she was attracted to him no matter what you do is a big turn-off.PalAvian wrote...

All males, specially humans look like frogs and that includes standart male Shepard. Hell, even my custom maleShep look prettier (in an unassuming way) than any human guy you’ll find in the game.
But to throw them a bone I’ll say that after playing the demo I noticed they improved Alenko, a lot. He looked pretty damn leprechauny in the other 2.

Yup. And aside from all the horribleness in the romance itself, it's just a less interesting dynamic than between Garrus and Shepard for instance. There just wasn't a whole lot there. And Bioware can write an overtly sexual romance, and do it well. Just look at DA:O's Zevran (and this is coming from a girl who thought that Zevran's looks were very unsexy).PalAvian wrote...

I have to take your word for it I don’t play Dragon Age. But if they can write an overtly sexual romance, and do it well, that just makes me angrier actually, at the crumbs we got with Garrus.

2. It's a different sort of thing. Zevran is a very different character than Garrus and the sort of romance that he had would feel very out of place with Garrus. Garrus is awkward about the whole "potential sex" thing because he's very genuine and a lot is riding on it, whereas Zevran pretty much communicates in innuendo since it allows him to keep people at arm's length.

If you like well done character interaction and development then DAO is worth playing. They managed to do in a single game the kind of character arcs they are doing over the 3 ME games.

Zevran is a 'sexy' romance but the character is very twisted (broken?) so you kinda pay for it. Good thing tho you can help him push thru and the end of the romance can be very very sweet.

@ jellobell: About Garrus romance... he’s award because he’s been written that way. He didn’t have to act like that, the guy is pretty assertive on everything else so don’t know why he would act differently in this sort of situation. Granted, it creates a contrast that makes the whole deal cute and some girls are suckers for that kind of thing so I guess that’s why they went with that.

I agree with that. They botched the whole Jacob romance story line to me. It's just.....uncomfortable. And it's a shame because he's a hell of a character. Femshep comes off like a sexual harrassing boss in that.
I thought the best one was Garrus simply because it was so damn funny. Two old friends fumbling through something that would be awkward even if they were both the same species.

I'm not really a "sucker for that kind of thing" but I think it's consistent with Garrus's character. Some things come easily to him, others don't. Close relationships in general just don't seem to be one of those things that he has a lot of practice with; he doesn't have any close friends except for Shepard, and he cares for his family but can only show it indirectly. He's been a soldier all his life, he's good at it, and he knows it. He's most comfortable when he's talking trash or shooting things. Deep down, Garrus is very insecure about relationships and assumes that he'll ruin everything, which makes him try way too hard when he eventually decides to go for it. He figures that if he puts in a ton of extra effort that it'll be less likely to blow up on him.@ jellobell: About Garrus romance... he’s award because he’s been written that way. The way I see it, Garrus isnt nervous about the sex in itself. His description of blowing off steam with the female scout even makes you think hes pretty ok about talking about sex more or less openly. What makes him nervous is the fact that its Shepard and that she's a human.
The awkward part can be cute for a while but hopefully Garrus goes back to normal. And by normal I mean extraordinary badass and snarktastic.

He definitely isn't squeamish about sex; he worked in the Wards for his whole C-Sec career. The story about the Turian scout makes it clear that he has no problem with casual sex, but there's nothing casual about what he feels for Shepard.outmane wrote...

This this this! And that's what makes the romance interesting. I mean, I'm a dude that plays femshep simply because I prefer the character to the male model but still see the appeal of the Garrus romance. It's funny but kind of sweet.

Im not sure Garrus has a problem with 'commitment' in general either. Hes a pretty commited guy, specially to his ideals. And he is so loyal to Shep, even just a broShep.
He will absolutlty do what it takes, sometimes even a little too much... So I think hes mostly afraid not to pe up to the part.

What Jellobell says. Ya nailed it.
He's gotten burned a lot by his own passions. It makes sense that approaching a relationship with someone he respects/cares for greatly is going to hit close to his own insecurities/sense of failure (unwarrented as an outsider may see it, it's clear -he- feels it). Tie to it that he's never found another species attractive and it's a lot for the guy to handle. But for all the awkwardness, I like that there are little gems of definite interest/determination/anticipation that shine through. Like the inflection of his voice when the romance dialogues have been initiated and Shep goes to talk to him again.
'Do yo have a moment to talk?'
'Definitely...'
Seriously, just the way it's said gets me everytime. It's all the difference between making him so awkward that it's uncomfortable.. and making him - for lack of a better term - human. Of greater depth.
Plus I like the fact that ME2 doesn't smooth out all the rough edges so far as the Garrus romance goes. It plays well with his not being a romance option in ME1, so that his over all arc takes more time, progresses at a far more believable rate than apparent in most - if not all - of the other romances.
@Outmane: I think some of the awkwardness remains in ME3, but there is definite progression of the romance as a whole and how they come to interact/work off each other. Which I'm cool with, if that's how it turns out to be!
