Interesting, because I've heard the exact opposite. I've seen multiple people complaining about how Garrus, Tali, and Liara are the best romances and everyone else gets shafted. Plus, I've talked to people who've read the Garrus spoilers from the leaked script and they're pretty happy about them.

@Saren:  Could you please share some of the spoilerly Turain stuffs?  I don't seem to find it in my version of the leaks!

Do you want me to send you the romance spoilers? The one I hinted at is part of Garrus' romance. There's another in Diana's (the new on-ship reporter) dialogue about turian reporters, which could probably be posted here because it doesn't spoil any part of the game - just a funny but true remark, and so typical for turians.

@LadyVakarian & SgtElias: Okay, I'll send them to both of you! :)

@AlphaDormante: I'll read your post after I send them the spoilers. The thread just exploded with activity. xD

Yes, if you could please send me any of the turian remarks and that part of Garrus' romance <3  I've been trying to figure out which line it could be in the romance dialogue I have but I'm not finding it

Yeah, I from what I've seen (and maybe I haven't seen all of it, I don't know) there is no way I could say Garrus was left out in the cold.  From what I have seen, the Garrus romance arc is brilliantly handled in ME3 and I am incredibly happy with it.  Honestly, I don't think I'll bother with romancing any of the other characters.

Greetings, Garus thread! Tis I, a lurker-occasionally-contributor. I post today because I've recently sat down with a friend who's new to Mass Effect and, upon finding out she romanced Garrus, helped her pick apart the romance and why it's our favorite in the game. I saw that some of the discussion in this thread has been along the lines of a few topics we covered...and thought I might as well share our findings. Massive tl;dr incoming - quick, scroll faster if you want to live!

  • Is Garrus Just Not Into Shep?
This is a common concern for many a Garrusmancer, and honestly, it's one I've struggled with myself. Let's face it: Garrus seems anxious and uncomfortable throughout the majority of the romance, more than once offering Shepard a way out. It's very, very easy to interpret that as a lack of interest on Garrus's part - maybe he's not really into the idea but just doesn't want to disappoint the Commander, or maybe all these concerns are his way of dropping hints that he doesn't think it can work. When we see that this is his reaction, it's in our nature to worry. He seems uncomfortable, and that makes us uncomfortable, and for some people, that feeling is strong enough to break things off.

I will say right now: for this romance, you have to dig deep to find what you're looking for. And it can be a scary thing to do with someone you're so afraid of pushing away. But, for this particular romance, what you will find is gold.

Consider: Is Garrus really the kind of person to lie just to make Shepard feel better? Would he honestly engage himself in a relationship that would make him miserable? That would endanger his relationship with Shepard?

That last question is particularly crucial. Imagine you are Garrus, and your closest friend in the galaxy, the woman you respect more than anyone, who trusts you enough to even think about this,  is propositioning you. You are flattered - but not interested. At this moment, you have two options:

1) Kindly turn her down, at the risk of feeling like an ass. She may be embarrassed, and your friendship may be strained for a while. This is unfortunate...but would it really ruin the friendship? Do you really believe she would resent you for putting her in the friendzone? Would she crush your entire relationship under her heel over it? For a friendship so solidly built on trust and respect...I would argue "no". Yes, it may be awkward for a while, and yes, you may feel awful for not being able to give her what she wants...but in the end, and once the smoke clears, the respect and trust was always there.

2) Accept her proposal, despite your misgivings. And now, you're hating every moment of it. You're locked in a relationship you didn't want just to appease her - maybe you thought you were doing good, giving her that one thing she wanted before you're both blasted to hell, but it's wrong. You're lying to her, and she's making you miserable. Who's winning? Who gets satisfaction from this? And what happens if she gets invested, so very attached to this relationship? Could you hide it forever? Would you resent her, knowing you could never leave to find your own wife and children among your species? And what if the truth came out? What would happen to the very foundation of the relationship - trust and respect - if she found out you'd been stringing her along the entire time? That she was making you miserable?

Garrus's reaction to the proposal was stricken and hurried, so it's probable that he never actually took the time to process these possibilities. And that's fine. Because the promptness of his answer stirs up another whole thing: It's his gut instinct to say "yes". Garrus is brash and quick to act, even when it comes to Shepard...but that doesn't make him wrong. It's just the regular formula. Garrus has always reacted to situations without looking back - shooting the thug holding Dr. Michel, ordering the hit on Dr. Saleon's ship full of hostages, shooting Sidonis as soon as you get out of the way. He does these things, and doesn't give them a second thought, doesn't regret them for a single moment...unless Shepard brings it up. Unless Shepard forces him to take a step back, think about what he's done, what his actions have entailed for long-term.

See the pattern? When Garrus makes a rash decision, he never doubts he's making the right choice...unless Shepard is involved. And then, suddenly, there are a hundred shades of gray, and they all scare him, because he doesn't know what to do with them...but he's never run away. And he'll always give the gray shades a chance.

As mentioned before, Garrus' break-up dialogue starts out fairly relieved, and then awkwardly disappointed, and then finally, at the final romance scene, utterly humiliated. I think Garrus had this one single, horrifying moment of, "oh, hell, I want this"...but he has trouble conveying that. Because they're emotions, and Garrus has never been one for emotions - actions are how he speaks, and it's far easier to remain focused on the physical aspect of the relationship when Shepard isn't pushing the emotional part. In ME2? He isn't ready to process an emotional relationship. But I think he might be able to in ME3.

...this would serve as an excellent segue into my next topic, but I think I've blabbed far enough. I'll leave you guys alone for a while ;)

Next time on AlphaDormante's tl;dr Theater:

Body Language, Your Turian, and You!

Okay, I sent spoilers and explanations to everyone who asked for them so far! :) And I just have to say to anyone else, if you're worried that Garrus' (and Tali's) romance won't have a lot of content, don't be. They do, and it's brilliant.

*wipes away single tear* This is all so nostalgic. I'm glad that we got a happy ending after everything we went through to get Garrus in the first place.

And dammit your description of the awesomeness that is Garrus's romance is making me impatient. :pinched:

Interesting read, but I had to point put this part in particular because it's so brilliant and I never realized this before.

I just have one other comment - Garrus tells Shepard that she only makes him nervous, never uncomfortable. So, even if he might seem that way to some, I think it's just his regular nervous, "What if I mess this up somehow?"

And now I want to read "Body Language, Your Turian, and You"!

Things like that make me wish Bioware hid books around in the games, kind of like in The Elder Scrolls.

Since we're so influential now (heh heh)....I say we storm raid for an all-inclusive Garrus DLC. Wouldn't it be fantastical if we got some kind of pre/during his ArchAngel story? Or well anything related to Garrus' life?

I think there is a novel comming up that will interest you. Its inthe series Homeworld. One of them will be about Garrus ! Im sure it will be filled with Turian insight and scenes of Garrus popoing the heat sink with cute turian gals

Other then that, I would probably feel bad asking for a Garrus DLC when he is a permanent squaddy... I think they should be about ME2 squaddies first... I also think we should protect seals and shelter lost puppies... so dont mind me too much.

No no, not DLC. I want to have it too. :P Better yet, ask for a full expansion pack for sale in stores with missions for every character! (I can dream, can't I? xD)

That's great to hear; I lurk a lot, so I'm not exactly the most well-informed person on these forums, and I regularly have no idea what's what, and am too shy to ask. Add that to the fact that I've been (mostly) trying to avoid major spoilers and I'm basically out of the loop on a regular basis. This time, however, the exact thing I was wondering about came up in conversation as I was lurking, so thanks everyone for reassuring me! [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/lol.png[/smilie]

That'd be great, but as far as I know, I don't think Bioware will be going that route again anytime soon, after Leliana's Song. I heard somewhere (ah, heresay) that it didn't do as well as they were hoping, so they were leery of doing another character-specific DLC that wasn't from the perspective of the PC.

Of course, I'm also the one that brought you "Garrus is left out in the cold," so pay me no mind. ;)

Edited for formatting.

Damn it... i stumbled upon this earlier this month and I thought it was fan made. When I heard that it was legit, i was so mad at myself because i wanted to wait for the game. I only asked you for it because i was hoping it would be different from what i read but it was the same exact site. Damn it.

Other than this, he's telling the truth guys, the romances for both will be epic and make you say "Awwwwwww.." a lot! I kinda wish i didnt spoil it for myself tho.

@SgtElias: You should come to the Garrus thread more often! We seem to get a lot of new members every day, and we welcome them all to join us.

@jellobell: Homeworlds is a new comic series starting in a few months, and Garrus will be the focus of volume 3.

I wouldn't worry about another Deception. BioWare actually posted an apology on the forums and said they would make a corrected version of the book, so I think they'll be more careful in the future.

Yeah, that one's the real deal. It's amazing how some people manage to come to the forums every day and remain unspoiled for ME3. I've never tried it myself, but I always offer to send stuff in PMs instead of posting the info itself on the forums (or using big bold spoiler warnings for new info from the comics/novels) to make it easier for them.

I've actually liked all of the comics, and all of the books except for Deception (but it does have its hilariously bad qualities). I especially appreciated all of the extra Saren info from Revelation and Evolution. Thanks again, BioWare. :D I know they read the Garrus thread. Because if they don't, then they must be a mind-link that lets them know everything we want.

...Okay, I forgot one. I don't like Genesis either. Nor do I have it. But I do like to see Garrus dual-wielding pistols. I don't even care that it's not possible in-game.

Edit: Another top of page? All right, but you'll have to settle for Garrus with one pistol.
