Eh, yeah. It's part of why I avoid a lot of fanfiction/fandom.. it seems turians get confused for vampires/werewolves too often.
Anyway unrelated.. I recall part of a dream I had the other night of playing ME3 and in it Garrus had melee moves. That's about all I remember, watching him dropkick and rifle-butting husks.

I think he looks kind of smug more than anything. Maybe it's the fact that I can kind of see a smirk in the way his mandible is laying on the scarred side. xD
Regardless, that's just a gorgeous image. <3
Gah, I hate TOTP! I always overthink it and then make an uninspired choice. :< Oh well, I'll just repost of the beautiful image makalathbonagin posted.
Oh wow, just wow! This is so incredible beautiful - definitely my favourite Garrus pic ever! How can Garrus be so cute and badass at the same time? Thank you very much for posting!

I also want to say that I absolutely agree with you on the matters of biting/clawing/bruising in most fanfiction: it's not fun and it's not sexy - it's just creepy. Same goes for describing Garrus and turians in general as being prone to giving in to their instincts and supposed tendencies to violence. Everything we know about their culture indicates that they are an extremely progressive, open minded, disciplined people who'd have no problems whatsoever controlling their tempers and urges.
All that said, I want to defend this picture.

The artist has many, many beautiful depictions of Garrus romance, and none of them are violent. The description for this one clearly states: "So here they are, sharing a moment in the heat of battle." Not in the heat of clawing each other in bed. So yeah, I think the vampire/warewolf associations are undeserved in this case.

I so know what you mean. The thing that makes me angry is that this trend is so prevalent, it's almost become fanon. Which breaks my heart because Garrus is really such a perfect gentleman.leonia42 wrote...
Still.. it's a trend in the fanart/fanfiction that REALLY turns me off...
Yes, turians might have talons and canines, but, hey, a human can draw blood with nails and teeth just the same - if they want to. That's all it comes down to.

Unfortunately it was kind of worse case scenario rather than something really awesome. Long, wacky dream story short, I bought a DLC about Garrus setting up what happened to him in-between games and he became Space Anders, drastic character change and obsessive cause included. :<
Objectively though, it was a pretty interesting dream. /random
@Srast: Wh.. what is that?
@Lady Olivia: Agreed about that whole clawing, biting thing. Turians are just as civilized as humans, I might even argue that they're more civilized. How many oafish turians do you meet? They're almost always eloquent and kind of dapper.

That said, I'm about to go into shameless advertising mode and promote an awesome fanfic called 'Spirit of Redemption' by Myetel, which (though it does break two of the cardinal rules of Garrus/Shepard fics - no biting, no hybrid kids) still somehow manages to be completely awesome. Maybe it's the fact that it's set ten years after ME3, and Shepard is now in charge of the Spectres with Garrus as her second in command. Maybe its the rich exploration of turian culture, with a language so believable that I've been known to wander round the house muttering 's'kak' instead of 's***' and calling people 'futtari idiots'. Maybe its the fact that pretty much every asari in it is evil, and the science actually makes some sense. Maybe its the fact it has an awesome Sidonis, and incredibly well done OCs. Maybe it's the fact that it has a bio-engineered Yahg plague that kills 22,000 people a day and is being used by the batarians as a precursor to all out war.
Or maybe, yah know, it's just that it's over 1300,000 f***ing words already, and has only been being posted for the last five months.
Anyways, love this thread. Keep posting awesome stuff!

I'm really not one to get into these sorts of err... debates, but I guess what I'm saying is Garrus looks alien, so should his social tendencies be alien too? Or should his alien-ness be superficial only, so that when we continue our (assumed) romances in ME3 he will do all the things we expect any other (idealized) human male to do.
But, I'd have to say, the people who write those fanfics, especially the long ones, do more than I could ever do. Hats off to them for trying.

Plenty of violent, faceless mercs, and many awesome NPCs you can chat with, but few actual OAFS. Which is why Meln ("Good times are over") seems like such an outlier!

Heh. I have nothing at all against Garrus being alien. There are some excellent fics that really succeed in making him so, and these are among my favorites. But more often than not, fan-fic Garrus is very human-like up until it comes to, um, consummating the romance. In short, he's only alien in bed, and 99% of the alienness revolves around chirality and violence. That, I don't like.k8ee wrote...
I've read a few fanfics... and all I can say is I find I can't fault people for writing the Garrus/Shep romances in whatever way they want because really, it's all up to interpretation. Garrus is a pointy guy with sharp teeth, it's not surprising people want to take that and run with it. But I can see the other side of the coin with people who want Garrus to have very human tendencies towards intimacy and relationships.
And sure, live and let live. But as much as everyone can write whatever they like, so can everyone else criticize these writings however they like.
To try and step away from fan-fic, canon Garrus is pretty much human-like in every behavioral aspect. Correct me if I'm wrong? He speaks about differences but doesn't really act differently than a human would in any situation that I can remember. I believe the writers always intended this to be so, and not just for him - for most aliens. (Obviously, not for all.) So probably this won't change in ME3. And if it does, I hope the alienness will be spread all over, not all clustered around the romance and the bedroom.
PS Is there a decent word for 'alienness'?

Yeah....I read a lot of ME fanfiction and a lot of the Garrus/Shepard stuff really sucks, in particular the biting stuff - though I have seen people mess up by going in completely the opposite direction and turning Garrus into a f***ing teddy bear which is pretty useless as well.

I second this notion. The "Spirit of Redemption" is an overall excellent read. There may be biting, but it's explained in the context of Turian culture. There may be hybrid kids, but there is actually some background information as to how that all works. So while she does "break the rules", she actually has some explained reasoning behind it that do make sense.
That's not to say there have been a couple places where I've scratched my head about something in the fic. However, there are way more well-written and simply awesome parts that it completely overshadows any complaints I might have.
That, and she does original characters very well. Even characters that she's pulled from the ME universe like Lantar Sidonis and Blasto (who is an actual Hanar specter and a complete badass, one of my favorite characters) are very well characterized. She's really taken the story and made it her own.
Anyway, here's a link to the author's page: http://www.fanfictio.../2720337/Myetel
Read "The Spirit of Truth" if you want some more backstory, it takes place between ME2 and ME3.

Ahh, the ME kink meme, where even the most out-of-the-way pairings finally get shown some love. Now if only said love wasn't so... very physical all the time. Call me a prude, but I'm never a fan of abrupt-transition-to-two-pages-of-detailed-sex. But it's better than no such fics at all.
