Okay, I don't want to bring the discussion back to criticizing of this particular fanfic. That said, why would you put your infants in the care of someone who from simple prolonged skin-to-skin contact would give their sensitive baby skin a rash?

Oh man.  I did not even think of that.  Especially pertinent due to the precarious health of the hybrids in their early years, which is so belabored in the story.  Huh.

Gloves, I guess.

Livvie: Exactly. On all counts.

Aris: From what Weekes (sp?) said about turian skin being more like hardened, rough leather than "plate-like," I'd have to say probably not. However, does that mean their skin is softer at birth, and hardens with age? Hmmm. . .*ponders some fic writing ideas*

That makes me wonder.. How do turians handle their babies? Are the infants born with plates? Is claw-filing standard postnatal procedure? It seems like a literal case of 'wearing kid gloves'. :P

I like the idea that turians are hatched. From eggs. Little hatchlings. :)
Probably with soft plates and feathers that gradually harden until reaching their final shape in maturity.

*Edited for clarity.

Since twins have been mention in the CDN before it went off the air, live birth is more likely than egg birth. But, the plates probably come later and they just have a thick hide.

Maybe females don't have the claws males do.

Liv: I go back and forth on that, and I really need to make a damn decision, because it's going to come up in this fic I'm writing. (No spoilers, though, as I want it to be a surprise.)

Well, there's always the idea of "twiblings."

Yes, that term really exists, and there is a real, medical reason for it. The term came into being when a family hired two surrogates to carry their embryos (which split naturally, in the petri dish, or something like that), and delivered on the same day.

I've always imagined the babies' plates were soft as well. I didn't see the thing about turian twins, though. In that case I'd say yeah, live birth makes sense.

Hm. Didn't know about the twins. But why can't twins hatch from an egg? Twitchlings. :)

So, everyone latches onto the twin thing, but not what I said about Weekes saying turians aren't plated?

-_-

:P

They're still plates (as shown by the contrast between them and the rest of their skin, such as on their neck). The only thing Weekes said was regarding texture. ^^

An egg is a limited environment with limited nutrients.  If you've ever seen a chicken egg with two yolks, you know that both yolks are smaller.  In an egg environment, one twin is more likely to be absorbed by the stronger or out right killed so that at least one is viable.  That is, if the yolk separates at all.  And that's how you get chickens with two heads.

Just imagined a two-headed turian. Or one still walking around with his head cut off. Nightmare fuel. >_<

Now THERE is a plot bunny.  Two-headed turian with violet glowing eyes and a katana.

LOL! I remember that one from back in the day. xD It'd be more terrifying if my brain wasn't already numb to ridiculous clipping/texturing issues.

I'll take quality and continuity with canon lore over quantity and "fan favourites" any day. Noooow can we get back to Garrus and other sexy turians? Sometimes I think the fanfiction debates are best left in the other thread (or are topics worthy of their own thread) since not all of us read such things and would rather deal with CANON LORE as opposed to fan-created stuff.

Someone needs to ask Weekes about that live-birth versus eggs thing, that one has been bugging me for awhile. Right up there with how old is Garrus. Personally leaning towards live-births but given the lack of "funny bumps" on the ladies, it seems to run counter to what we'd expect from mammals, even alien mammals.

Leo: I guess that means no more fan art discussions then. Whatever will we talk about?

You know what I mean. This is kind of silly, can't we just respect one another and our different preferences? We all love turians here.

That's pretty much what we've been screaming for the better part of a MONTH, Leo. The din just got louder today because some of us couldn't take it anymore. Telling me to sit down and shut up because I don't like something you like (meaning "you" generally, not "you" personally, Leo) was pretty much the last straw. They don't get to disrespect me if I can't return the favor.

The two-headed turian stood framed in the doorway, his violet eyes glowing.  Appearing to come to a decision, he sheathed his gleaming katana and reached a hand toward the human woman.

"Please, Sia," he said.  His velvety voice rumbled forth from both sets of vocal cords, the dual flanging echoing through her bones.  "Forget Garrus Vakarian.  Come away with me.  We are meant for each other."  He fixed her with his predatory gaze, all four eyes blazing, and awaited her breathy response.

Well, they're aliens so for all we know they plant the embryo like a seed into fertile birthing grounds and wait for the fully grown baby to crawl to the surface. :D

@Ciaweth: ::snort:: Wouldn't it be 'they'? Unless that's just one of the heads talking. Love triangle? ::shot::

Sia was confused, which set of eyes was addressing her?  Overcome, she swooned.
