When you think about it, even if everything after the blast that takes down Shepard is fake, I don't see much way that the two who are with you would survive.  Even if you don't see them dead, no one else escaped that blast and you even hear that said over the radio--no one survived.  So those two behind you are goners.

So next time, I'll be taking either Javik or Liara and Vega along.

Because, much as some of you adore him, I didn't like Vega all that much.  Try telling him to stop the flirting and see what I mean.  He doesn't.  He's like Sexual Harassment Poster Boy.  And you're his commander, which makes his behavior all the more unacceptable, especially when you realize that apparently, if you're romancing someone, everyone knows about it.  And my Shepard is/was romancing Garrus.

Javik I don't know as well as the rest (even though his relationship with me was high enough to show up in the Normandy cutscene) and he wanted to be in the end battle.  So why not?  And Liara... keeps throwing herself at me even though I just want to be friends.  If she likes Shepard that much then she can put her money where her mouth is, so to speak.  Not that I hate her, but I still feel that Bioware tried to force her romance on me.  Including posting her face where Garrus's ought to be in Shepard's memories at the end.

Theres a deleted alternate scene running to the beam up to the citadel after harbinger shoots you, where you can see the 2 squadmates you brought with you have died in the attack.

Dont have a link, it hasnt been posted on youtube yet last time i checked, recently datamined... there was a post about it in the story forum this morning
personally not gonna watch it, but it shows garrus and liara....

I'm glad they left that out. Seeing Garrus and Liara vaporized in addition to everything else would have been too much.

Yep! I remember the first thing I did after Shep woke up was trying to find their corpses. Thankfully I didn't find them. I was already crying at this point.

Yes.  If your EMS is not high enough, they die in Harbinger's initial blast, and Shep dies at the end.

I'm replaying ME1 now, knowing that both my Shepard and Garrus are going to die (unless ending DLC actually happens).  It's heartbreaking, but kind of bittersweet.  They have so little time together, but they grow and change so much

I know.  I want them to survive and live happily after and have a horde of adopted babies, but if I can't do that, they can at least be in that bar together.  For my playthrough, at least, Shepard and Garrus became the emotional heart of the story, and I'm ok if it's a bittersweet one.

I keep playing through his ME3 dialogue.  God, he loves Shepard so much--I've never seen a video game LI that incredibly devoted.

I have a big problem with the bar thing. It's personal, but I don't believe in any kind of afterlife, even in games. So... it doesn't work for me. I want the typical, cliché happy ending and dying old and grey together.

If I can't have that, I'll just headcanon. But I'd rather not, if possible.

I'm a pretty strong atheist IRL, but I will believe in whatever afterlife Garrus wants me to believe in if it means they can see each other again after everything goes to hell   Never thought a video game character would make me contradict my core worldview.

And modders, if you need writers, I'd be happy to help.  I am pants at everything else, but I have some (minor) writing talent.

What was really depressing is I got the ending where (theoretically?) they both "live" but based on the context presented, they'll probably never see each other again. That was way, WAY worse than if they'd both definitely died. Blech.
