I just had a random thought.

Garrus and Shep are technically not speaking the same language, right? They understand each other thanks to a translator. Now assume they have kids (which I totally do in my headcanon, as I am sure most of you are as well). How are they going to teach them to talk? Not saying that'll be impossible, I'm just wondering how the translator would handle baby talk, especially baby talk that most likely involves two very different languages.

There's an app for that! Seriously though, I'm sure there are new baby-raising techniques and aids for a post-translator society. The asari would need them, at least.

I think translators are subdermal implants in the ME canon.  We don't know when people get them, but it seems like everyone has them, even people who don't venture offworld.  How else would the krogan stuck on Tuchanka in ME2 understand Shep?

It would be most reasonable for children to have translators implanted after the age of formal language acquisition: around 5-6 in humans.  My guess is that children would learn the primary language of their species, then rely on translators.  It says in the Codex that it's still considered courteous to know how to speak other languages, and just about any species can speak the simplified galactic trade language with little trouble.

Has anyone else noticed how much Garrus has aged? Maybe it's the scars or the lighting, but especially at the goodybe scene his countenance seemed pretty worn.

How do turians show age, anyways? I think to the councilor and I think...his carapace is just really wrinkly?

"Then we're going to retire to somewhere warm and tropical and live off the royalties from the vids."

3/27

Thisis how my bloody game ended, yep. I thought the idea was cute but it still feels like something is missing ah well, this was just for fun anyways. Their baby might be outfitted to resist the sun naturally but Shep still wanted him to have Anti UV to protect him. Purposeful play on words :3

I think her favorite part of the adoption is that she never had to lose her figure or her drinks

Also, stupid dark background messing with my transparent background D:<

This is so great. I love that you managed to capture Shep's badassery even in a swimsuit with a Krogan baby on her back, a drink in one hand and Garrus on the other. I have no problems believing she could still save the galaxy exactly as she is in your picture.

Totally can't remember.

If you romance him, he says it during the goodbye.

I took it as a joke though. I really don't think Garrus or Shepard (mine, at least) would want to raise a krogan. Besides, with the genophage only recently cured, I doubt any of the krogan would part with their children.

In my headcanon, Garrus and Shepard will probably stick to human, turian and quarian war orphans. Anything with too big of a lifespan gap would just make things too hard on the kid.

I did romance him but I was probably sobbing so much that I missed that part. ;o;
I can't play ME3 again any time soon, gonna wait first for more DLC and if there's nothing that fixes the ending, I just gotta endure and read lots of fanfictions.

I agree. Krogan (or asari) kids wouldn't even be adults when Garrus and Shepard die from old age. :/ I'm sticking with turian and human kids as well.

My guess is that the kid would go through a phase in which it'd speak a mix of human and turian language until he learns to differentiate between the two, and end up biligual. It shouldn't be all that different from bilingual households that exist now, except that his parents are not speaking the same language to each other.

In my headcanon Shepard and Garrus adopt older kids who have lost everything in the war (not just babies).

It would be interesting to hear turian language (and other alien languages!) without the translator. I am not sure turians can speak human language and vice versa... Their mouth structure is quite different after all.

Right. Unlike the 'little blue babies' with Liara, the child would lose both parents and would be an orphan once again.

The age gap would be my major concern, but aside from that, krogan just seem too different from humans and turians for that to go well. It's not just like raising a kid from a different cultural background, there are some fundemental emotional and psychological differences between krogan and humans. I feel like a krogan kid who should have been born in a clutch of hundreds would resent being alone and seperated from his/her people. I also imagine krogan probably respond better to more of a 'tough love' style of parenting that would seem extreme to a human or turian.

I adore all the fanart coming out with them and krogan babies just because it's a good nod to the dialogue (plus, it's adorable!). But in my head, they're babysitting for Wrex and Eve. xD;

RE: Adopting older kids. I want to imagine they adopted Jona. It's the only way to not feel awful about him. :(

Turian mouth structure is more flexible than it seems, judging by Garrus' evident kissing ability. :wizard:

I really want to see Shepard and Garrus kissing without camera turning away. An actual kiss please, with tongues! :D

I think that's just the devs handwaving and deciding Shep and Garrus would've figured out how to show affection by ME3.

Turian lips seem a little flexible from Garrus's talking animations, but there's no way they could "kiss" the way humans do with their jaw structure.  It's more likely that Shep kisses him, and he reciprocates as best as he can.  He could probably french her, but I don't think it's safe for Shep to reciprocate that.  His teeth seem awfully sharp.

(I have thought way too much about this topic :innocent:)

Yeah same here, I always felt like they were bantering a bit to not deal with the seriousness of the situation.. Thats why her last line always kills me.. It's like they pretend to be cool but suddenly "break" :wub:

@Translators: There is also a universal 'trade' language which I imagine both Garrus and Shepard would speak due to their respective jobs. I always figure most dialogue in mass effect is a mixture of the trade language and normal translation software. And then people with heavy accents, like Tali, might be simply 'learned' speakers of a foreign language.

About the translators, in the book Mass Effect: Ascension Kahlee Sanders wear her translator around her neck like a pendant.

And I'd like to point out that Shepard kinda already raised a Krogan child: Grunt.Posted Image But yeah, I like the idea of Garrus and Shep adopting older human and turian children.

But shepard already "raised" a krogan! And see how well that turned out :) So more krogan for Shepard!
