RUMOR has it the only time I've cried at a movie was when I was 3 or 4, and that movie was on a neighbor's TV. Apparently I was seriously upset when the Beast vanished, and did not accept the handsome prince as a reasonable substitute.

I thought it was a completely different person. I was apparently very confused.

All the talk about different languages made me curious, so I thought I'd check out the German version. Chose to install it in English and seem to be unable change the VO language, but the subtitles or codex entries so far... Translating "Harvester" with "grasshopper"? The "Brute" is translated, but the word is somewhat ambiguous in German - it can also mean "blank", as in "blank CD". As the simple English "you" has a formal and a non-formal translation in German, some friendship dialogue at the start seems surprisingly cold, or just awkward. Are there similar problems / oddities in the French version?

First conversation in Main Battery and Citadel date: formal speech from both sides. "I love you, XYZ" is *not* a sentence where the formal translation of "you" seems appropriate - I just hope there's a difference between subtitles and real VO
Before-Cerberus scene: All personal and fine. Even in German they realized they are in a relationship. Sadly, no nice surprises as in the French version, just close translations of the English scene.
London Goodbye: First formal, even the "forgive the insubordination" part, but followed by a switch to the personal form, from "the galaxy would be empty without you" statement onwards. And Shepard reacts accordingly. Surprisingly touching, with that contrast. The scene is always emotional, but that change, from formal-Primarch-is-in-the-same-room-we-better-behave to to-hell-with-it-I-say-goodbye-how-I-like-it, even reflected in the way they adress each other - it has a nice touch.

"Grasshopper"!

The French translation is surprisingly good when you compare it to the usual. They actually translate English expressions in French expressions and not just copy paste the text. There are some pretty epic fails though (oddities, as you said, like "departing soldier" translated as "dying soldier" O_o), and the NPCs are, overall, terribly dubbed (can't resist giving an example: ).

I play it because, as I said, I don't like Hale's performance, Chemin's voice fits my Shep better. And while I loooove Keener, I love Morvan even more. The English version is objectively better but I just enjoy the game better in French.

As for friendship/romance dialogues, they are really good. The actors for the main characters do a terrific job overall.
When Morvan said "Moi aussi, j'ai besoin de vous." ("Because I need you"), I melted.

Thanks for the link, the insight and the translations! And yeah, the French version is great. Though I like the switch from "people we care for" to "people we love" better.

Crucible and Catalyst are translated. Luckily, the Citadel kept its name, and I don't think that they renamed EDI or Joker.

Edit: Ah, they did not have to "rename" EDI in the German version. Just thought of a similar phrase with the same acronym.

Well they tell each other "vous" the whole time instead of "tu", which sounds pretty formal for two people in love, but I kinda like it. It's classy. "Je vous aime" was cute.
The "people we love" bit made me "awww" for five minutes straight.

As for names, Joker is Joker, EDI is IDA (they wanted to translate the acronym I guess). Sovereign is still Sovereign (thank God), but Harbinger is "L'Augure", which is... a bit weird. Though to be fair "Harbinger" would sound silly with a French accent. Crucible and Catalyst are also translated (Creuset et Catalyseur) (the kid sounds equally terrible in both languages btw). And Citadel is Citadelle, so that's basically the same.

Omg. I couldn't stop laughing when the hiding guy talked. I'm sorry if that makes me seem like an a*se. Every time he opened his mouth I cracked up. I was literally hysterical.

Omg. Badass dialogue. Well, dirty. But definitely in the order of badass. So that line equates to the English version's "You got a mouth on you! I'll enjoy watching you use it"? I think I like the French version of that too. It's more, charged - I guess is the word I'd use? This is really quite fun and interesting. Thanks guys!

I can't really hear that in the French version, or I don't know what to listen for to get that same reaction. But, having said that, the way the French VA first says "Shepard..." that was pretty nice. Heehee.

I think I hear what you mean about the French VA for F!Shep - there's a sort of quietness to her voice which I think i respond to more for this sort of intimate, informal conversation. By comparison, in that particular scene in the English version, Hale never seems to quite lose her tone of command to my ears. The difference to me becomes more apparent to me after the line "That's not war, it's a massacre."

I understand, I feel the same way, but in reverse. I feel less passion and more... tenderness, maybe? in French. I heard it before the English version, thay may be why.

And yeah, the first "Shepard" sold it for me. Considering she had just had a chat with Kaidan at the hospital, I can totally see her thinking "yep, I definitely know why I moved on, no regrets" when he says it.

Hmmm, comparing the two they're both very well done, but in different ways, Brandon Keener is very intense about it, while the french voice actor sounds tired and has a quiet desperation to his voice when saying that line, which might be hard to hear if you're not familliar with french... Unless you are familiar with french and I just made a colossal ass out of myself, in which case that's a Quebec thing, we're a province of ass holes. But your line about not knowing what to look for made me think you're not familiar with french, so I apologize if I was wrong.

Interesting. I started ME and ME2 in German and switched to the English version after my 2nd playthrough. I know that, back then, I instantly liked Hale, but Garrus' English voice took some time to get used to. Since I disliked the German VA of Shepard and liked the VA of Garrus, that's probably not surprising.
But either two years are a very long time for auditorial memory, or Hale and Keener have overridden these parts of my brain. Checked the ME3 romance in German on youtube and was shocked to "discover" that the German VAs had changed.
...
Needless to say, they haven't. No new VAs, at least not for FemShep and Garrus. Okay, hardware changes during the years, and perhaps the audio quality of the vid was not perfect... But after switching ME2 back to German... I would not have recognized some voices. And, sadly, that's not a joke. I don't really know if that is still funny or already disturbing - or just a sign that some of the English VAs (that is, Shepard's and Garrus's) did a great job.

Haha no need to apologise at all. I'm from Australia and the only French I know is bad French from my highschool days and very little of it. I definitely never knew enough to be able to pick out the more subtle nuances. But yes, I do agree - Keener sounds more intense in that line (which definitely generates my mass effect field, to steal Ash's line).
In the French version I knew he sounded dead tired but I didn't hear the desperation. I don't really hear the tenderness either, haha. Seems like I'd need to practice listening for it.

Something funny and turian related I noticed a while back and was reminded of during my current NG+ playthrough. After doing Grissom Academy, when you go through the security checkpoint in the Normandy the two guards there are talking about the war on Palaven and one of them refers to them as "the birds." Makes me laugh. I wonder if that's common nomenclature throughout the Alliance.

I'm sorry, I admit she does a fine job, but I can't stand her voice personally.

Well, she's no Keener, but at least she sounds, well, normal and doesnt make everything sound like a statement. Even in personal situations, Manshep sounds like an automated response drone.

Example: ME2 when telling Anaya has a right to disobey. Hale just sounds so natural.

Heh, I always thought the opposite. I couldn't stand Hale's voice in the first game. She got better latter on but it still sometimes sounds like she's just reading off a script.

She and Mark Meer both got better as the games progressed, though I've liked Hale's voice from the start.  I actually have the problem of familiarity; I've heard so much of her VA work that I can usually pick her out even if she has an accent.  Sometimes it's hard to get over "Hey, that's Jennifer Hale!" and focus on the character.  It's why I've never been able to play the trooper in TOR; she uses the same voice for that as she does for Shepard.

This is too funny.  It's quite telling (now, in retrospect) that I found the prince much more attractive as the beast.  Kind of explains my turian fetish now
