Kaidan doesn't compare Shepard to Rana. It was a way to give Shepard a compliment while skirting the regs since you can't come right out and tell your CO, "Hey, you're smoking hot and can I help you off with that uniform?"

For me, part of it is the uncanny valley. I don't usually like "realistic" human faces in games for that reason. Kaidan looks odd and repulsive to me. A lot of the human NPCs do. Garrus and the other alien crewmembers don't.

I must confess though, I'm not sexually attracted to Garrus. The other romance options just don't interest me for various reasons, and I like the easy closeness Garrus and Shep have in ME3. Honestly, I'd prefer if sex was unimportant to their relationship instead of the impetus. I just have to pretend most of the ME2 romance didn't happen.

Given your on a suicide mission every mission, I doubt anyone cares anyways. If you romanced him in me1 that was against regs to begin wtih so telling shep she is hot... which god she is hot wouldn't amount to anything.

Or like Joker said, they can court martial him after they saved the galaxy.

It's not a suicide mission at that time in the game, regs still apply.  And Kaidan says the court martial line, not Joker.  After he already threw caution to the wind and approached his CO before Ilos.

Anyway, back to Garrus.

It's definitely not how to win a girl over, either. I dated this guy in college who'd talk about his first loves (didn't know her name, not even a picture) but it still turned me off so much. It was funny because once I was committed to someone else he was so hurt and insulted. Dude, you told me you fell in love with someone over your summer in Korea.

*facepalm*

I'm fine with mentions. Garrus does that ("I remember this one time...") but comparing one's charm or whatever crosses the line (that ex I mentioned compared our breasts, although mine was bigger, still a total no). Speaking of which...has anyone written a fanfic breaching that topic with Garrus?

I imagine Veronika going on their first date and teasing him about it, then he'd admit that hasn't had a serious relationship before, Veronika has had a serious relationship, but either he died or cheated I'm still undecided (it would've been before ME1 though). What do you guys think? Did Garrus ever have "an ex"? And how would that have gone down?

nah nah is joker. I just heard him 2 hrs ago in me3. Not sure if kaidan says it before then since he is dead.
Any mission with shepard is a suicide mission at this point. Even legion agrees :P

I was talking about Mass Effect 1.  Joker echoes it in 3.  Kaidan said it first in 1.

Lexie's a lousy flirter, she probably had a few flings but not many serious relationships. Maybe one. I'm not sure.

As for Garrus, it's a tough one. I'm not even sure how turians approach relationships generally speaking; obviously they can commit to a serious relationship, arguable the same way humans do, but Garrus's story with the infamous flexible scout that he randomly banged that one time doesn't give me the impression he had a lot of serious relationships in the past. Besides he says he has no romantic skills whatsoever in ME3, and while I disagree wholeheartedly on that fact (DIPSMOOCH, Garrus!), maybe he thinks so because he hasn't had a lot of experience in the "serious relationship" area. Plus I picture him pretty young anyway.

Oh my god, It's gotten to that point now where I can doodle poor Garrus getting subjected to various scenarios as if he were one of my own characters ahahahah oh no.

I'm working on an art trade at the moment and it involves himself, shep and their kids at the fair. That was like opening a can of worms on him. I'll send you guys the prelude to the picture later today XD;;;

My Shepard is a lot like Miranda: very calm and collected about casual sexual encounters and really skittish about feelings.  I don't think she's ever had a serious relationship.  Garrus was the first person who really broke through her ice queen shell in ME1.

As for Garrus, he's a charming and attractive turian, I'm sure he's had at least flings.  As for anything serious, his awkwardness with Shep might be an indication that he hasn't, or maybe that's just due to interspecies weirdness.  At any rate, Shep is his one true love :)

Exes in video games (and IRL) don't bother me.  Talking about past relationships doesn't bother me; it's bound to come up in conversation from time to time.  What bothers me is people who can't shut up about their exes, dead wives, dead goldfish, etc.  Three guesses how well I liked Thane's romance <_<

Though to be entirely fair to Carth, there were a LOT of factors working against him.  The biggest one wasn't the dead wife thing, it was the fact that I was about 16 when I played KOTOR for the first time.  And Carth's 38.  His in-game SON was older than me.  I'm sorry, call me immature, but EWWWWWWWW.

He's a good character, I just really didn't like it.  I ran into a similar problem with Thane; I was closer to Kolyat's age than Thane's upon playing ME2.  I know Shep's older, but player preferences and perspective are relevant, and romancing someone old enough to be my dad is yucky.

I'm not surprised. :D But honestly, I understand, I was a bit irked by it too but I somehow looked past it.

I enjoyed his romance. He wasn't as epic as Han Solo as far as Star Wars pilots go, but I enjoyed his relationship to Revan, minus the dead wife talk part. Besides, back when I first played KotOR, I wasn't particularly picky when it came to romance options. I even romanced Anomen from BG (he was pretty cool in Throne of Bhaal actually).

Then you're a more tolerant person than I am :D

I can appreciate that the Carth and Thane (at least in ME2) romances are well written.  Anomen too.  The fact that *I* personally wouldn't touch that with anything but a boot out the airlock has nothing to do with the quality of the writing.

I tend to be very picky when it comes to LIs.  And yet, I ended up romancing Anders, psycho boyfriend extraordinaire :innocent:

More tolerant? I don't know. I hate Liara with a burning passion despite the fact that I should be angry at the writers, and not her.

Seriously, thank BSN for flashback mods.

Anders is crazy, fanatic and hot. What's not to like?

And he loves cats while wearing sexy boots. God those boots, my Hawke wanted to steal them so badly.

I liked pretty much all the ME characters except Jacob (no offense to fans). I loved Thane and my Shep had great respect for him but yeah, the kid thing turned us both off. I see Kaidan as a close friend/brother type. I really wanted Jack to be bi, I'm a total sucker for girls with tattoos and that body type but alas... Garrus still remains number 1 in all things.

I lamented the change in Anders from Awakening to DA2. God. Awakening!Anders had me on the floor in stitches from laughing, which isn't so bad a strategy to get me on the floor for other things, because hey, I love to laugh. ANYWAY. DA2 Anders, while still hot and mopey and loving cats just made me want to cry in light of what he'd been. I swear, if I had a thing for fictional dwarves though, I'd've jumped Varric like a pogo stick. I loved his personality - rake with a heart of gold if he counted you as a friend, and a razor sharp wit to boot.

As for the physical attractiveness of Garrus, I never actually thought about him that way until the ending drove me to fanfic and fanart as a means of emotional therapy. So yes, I'm blaming Bioware, but I will acknowledge that some arguable good may have come of the endings in terms of broadening my fictional crush horizons.

I actually prefered DA2 Anders humor than his Awakening self, it was a bit more dry. Plus I felt his character was a lot more complex.

I find Garrus and Turians in general to be very attractive in an asthetic/golden ratio kind of way. Plus I'll admit I found the Beast in Beauty and the Beast to be attractive, way more than his prince self. xD

It was kind of his alien appearance that did it for me too though.  I don't know.  He's incredibly tall and muscular.  He just looks masculine.  Now that I'm trying to think about what it is, it's hard to put my finger on it--but his appearance definitely had something to do with it.  I've always liked the look of Turians.

I agree, he gives off a really masculine vibe.

In spite of being very alien, Garrus hits all of my major physical attraction points in human men. Tall, broad shoulders, muscular but not stocky, pretty eyes, angular face and jawline (and how!) and a sexy, sexy voice. As a plus, his alien traits allow him to avoid certain turn-offs of mine (excessive hairiness, for one) as well as the uncanny valley I get from all of the human males in-game.

RE: Garrus' romantic history. I'm glad not to know. Seriously, does every LI have to tell me about his past love? I don't care and I'm not flattered by the comparisons. They need to stop taking up precious romance dialogue telling me about some other woman and making me feel like there's an invisible scoreboard somewhere. Such a turn-off.

I don't mind the reach vs. flexibility story at all since that wasn't a relationship, but I'm SO glad that him getting serious in ME3 didn't come with him talking about a past girlfriend.

I like the fact that in DA2 you can bounce off any LI because all LIs open around the same time and even if you went along one you ended up not liking you could just sleep with another. I really wanted Aveline. Was fanning myself after her quarrel with Isabella.

I went for Fenris, then Anders. Favorite humorous Hawke line's got to be "I thought it tasted like chicken" and "Want a sandwich?" I think Fenris wins by a teent itsty bit but not much. I don't prefer guys in tights at all.

Anyways back to Garrus. Been itching for something to inspire me to write a fanfic. Any prompts out there?

And another edit: Wait...what about the female LIs? Do they have exes at all?

Let me see if I have this right... (From KotOR onwards)

Female LIs known to have no past romantic relationships: 4 (Bastila, Dawn Star, Liara, Tali)
Female LIs with unknown romantic history: 8 (Silk Fox, Morrigan, Merrill, Ashley, Miranda, Kelly, Samantha, Allers)
Female LIs with known exes: 3 (Leliana, Isabela, Jack)

Male LIs known to have no past relationships: 1 (Alistair)
Male LIs with unknown romantic history: 3 (Fenris, Garrus, Sebastian)
Male LIs with known exes: 8 (Carth, Sky, Zevran, Anders, Kaidan, Thane, Jacob, Steve)

Female LIs who compare the PC to their exes: 0
Male LIs who compare the PC to their exes: 5 (Carth, Sky, Kaidan, Thane, Steve)

So... yeah.

*I might be off, I've only seen the female romance videos once each and for some of them that was a loooong time ago.
