In other news, if you guys haven't seen Chris l'Etoile's quote snippets from the development of ME1 and ME2, you really should. It's hilarious.

I think it looks better than Biowares depiction of Turian anatomy.

I really like it. Even if it might similar to collectors/protheans, it doesn't really matter. I mean, asari are "similar" to humans. So it isn't unlikely that some other species are similar.

I wasn't the OP but I remember seeing this on DA.

I really like the "feathered" effect on the plating.

So I know how the neck of a baby can stink. Their necks are really weak, esp. the first few months. That's what bibs are for, because they sure can't wash their necks by themselves. When I took care of my little siblings I'd place a napkin under their chin because milk would dribble down and such.
So looking at the cowls of turians...how do they wash that? Do you think the young turians would have them or would it make more sense for the cowls to come in during maturity?

I think baby turians would probably have shorter, soft cowls and fringes, just the hint of an adult equivalent, and grow into them as they get older. Especially if turians give live birth; can you imagine giving birth to something with the proportions of an adult turian?

I'm not entirely sure turians have cowls. There was a cutaway in the artbook that cast doubt on it.

I'm starting to doubt it too. In one of the alien design videos they posted last year, I believe they basically said they never decided one way or another. At the very least, I think turian fashion exaggerates them greatly.Sialater wrote...

I'm happy there's room for doubt, because while the cowl might be an interesting aesthetic, it's problematic in terms of practicality.

I think one of the devs confirmed that they have cowls, might've been Weekes but I can't remember the exact quote.

Er, um... crap. It's earlier in this thread.
I think it's in the artbook that came with the CE. I'll have to look when I get home. It just so happens that I can find a page for every damned character except him. Ugh.
In the mean time, this is actually as close as I've seen to my idea what he'd look like:

Buzzfeed
Though according to the article, it's supposed to be in here.
Just jumping in mid-discussion.
I always thought that the armor design was inconsistent with how prominent the cowl is in the turian anatomy drawing (which, by the way, is included in the artbook. I just can't find my copy because I'm in the process of moving lol) The artbook did mention that the design team always tried to work first from the naked forms, then put the clothes on... but the collar of the turian heavy armor is too wide open and you don't see anything of the cowl that apparently sits a lot closer to the neck. I'm having a hard time explaining it argh..

I always figured the artificial cowl in the armor and clothing was to keep them warm. As a species that's used to a warmer climate, they probably find anything short of a Texas summer freezing cold. So... the cowl in the armor has greater environmental controls. The cowl in the clothing could, too.
I think in one of the creating characters vids the artist said they incorporated the cowl of the armour into their bodys to make them "distinct", rather than just plated humanoids so to speak. Nothing to do with being biologically correct, but just a distinct characterisation.
Same vid where they claimed to have no idea how to make a femturian distinctly feminine (i.e boobs, boobs everywhere). This one

I kinda assumed that initially they'd be as soft as a human baby, in the sense that its soft and pliable during and soon after birth, taking its true form later in development.
Also i'd be a bit more worried about the leg spurs on the way out...

So the cutaway in the artbook means nothing then?
The cutaway doesn't really match up with how Turians look in casual wear though.

I don't think the devs themselves knew what the cowl even was or what it was intended for. There was a video that stated, however, that attempting to deviate from the human base frame for in-game designs led to the increase of the upper back areas because that was the easiest part to manipulate on the model, without making it difficult to animate. Hence why Krogans and Turians both have big ass humps.
Edit: This relates to what Envy said hehe. ^^
