You and me both, I always seem to enjoy fanboy fanart/fanfictions a lot more. Fluff is good and it's a part of my daily intake of fan-work, but it's done to death. Especially in fanfiction, the vast majority of the fangirls feed their need for fluff and so plot always lacks. The fangirls that can balance fluff and plot into a nice and healthy package are as few and far between as the fanboys who express themselves in our beloved artforms.
I have to say I haven't read any Brokarian fics yet, have you got any recommendations?
I'm a straight male fanfic author who deals almost purely with "bro" fics, which seems to be very much a niche genre. The romance angle is handled well enough and in great enough volume, and quite frankly I don't know if I'd be any good at it. (Hell, as a guy, I'm genetically predisposed to have trouble with that in real life.
So if you're looking for Brokarian fics, I've got a few to offer:
Just Like Old Times - Right at the start of Mass Effect 2, Tali has trouble adjusting to the idea of being on a Cerberus ship, until she runs into an old friend.
Friends Like These - Following JLOT, the members of the old Normandy crew worry that Shepard might be under Cerberus influence
Second - When Shepard is off the ship, the squad pushes back when Miranda tries to exert her authority and push for Garrus to replace her as XO.
The Peanut Butter Principle - ME3 - Garrus intervenes in a mess hall dispute that runs a lot deeper than Vega eating the last jar of peanut butter on the ship
And finally, here's a chapter out of a much larger fic For Tomorrow We Die that got a lot of positive feedback from the Brokarian crowd. The story takes place right after the Omega Four mission after qurian/geth peace talks spark an intergalactic incident right when Shepard is trying to make amends with the council. The ship is in bad shape and so is Shepard, and there's only one person on the ship who can talk to the Commander on the same level.
Enjoy!
