You and me both, I always seem to enjoy fanboy fanart/fanfictions a lot more. Fluff is good and it's a part of my daily intake of fan-work, but it's done to death. Especially in fanfiction, the vast majority of the fangirls feed their need for fluff and so plot always lacks. The fangirls that can balance fluff and plot into a nice and healthy package are as few and far between as the fanboys who express themselves in our beloved artforms.

I have to say I haven't read any Brokarian fics yet, have you got any recommendations?

I'm a straight male fanfic author who deals almost purely with "bro" fics, which seems to be very much a niche genre. The romance angle is handled well enough and in great enough volume, and quite frankly I don't know if I'd be any good at it. (Hell, as a guy, I'm genetically predisposed to have trouble with that in real life. ;) ) But something that makes Mass Effect click for me is the camaraderie of the Normandy crew, male or female, and trying to bring the clashing personalities together to work as a team. So just as fangirls feed the need for their fluff, this fanboy feeds his need to bro it up with the gang on the ship, and that's where I focus my writing.

So if you're looking for Brokarian fics, I've got a few to offer:

Just Like Old Times - Right at the start of Mass Effect 2, Tali has trouble adjusting to the idea of being on a Cerberus ship, until she runs into an old friend.
Friends Like These - Following JLOT, the members of the old Normandy crew worry that Shepard might be under Cerberus influence
Second - When Shepard is off the ship, the squad pushes back when Miranda tries to exert her authority and push for Garrus to replace her as XO.
The Peanut Butter Principle - ME3 - Garrus intervenes in a mess hall dispute that runs a lot deeper than Vega eating the last jar of peanut butter on the ship

And finally, here's a chapter out of a much larger fic For Tomorrow We Die that got a lot of positive feedback from the Brokarian crowd. The story takes place right after the Omega Four mission after qurian/geth peace talks spark an intergalactic incident right when Shepard is trying to make amends with the council. The ship is in bad shape and so is Shepard, and there's only one person on the ship who can talk to the Commander on the same level.

Enjoy!

So yeah, I've been trawling FF.net for Brokarian and if you're looking for quality, basically the gentleman above is it. He really is the only recommendation I have, and fortunately, he's really good. Keen eye for characterisation and motivations too. Just read everything he's written. Seriously. I spent yesterday evening stuffing my brain with the entirety of For Tomorrow We Die. The evening before that? All the other stuff he'd written. Tonight? I'm wishing he'd written more so I could read it. But alas, there is none, so I am not. But still. Thank you ElectricZ.

I don't suppose someone is coveting a list of shiny Brokarian fic somewhere?

Maybe I am a little bias here, but it seems to me that the people who are most upset about the endings are the people who romanced Garrus in the ME2/ME3. I know the disappointment extends out to a lot of people who played the game differently (especially those who were maleshep and romanced Tali or Liara), but, from what appears on deviantart, fanfiction.net and the retake ME3 facebook page, there is a huge number of pro Garrus/Femshep fanarts.

Is it because those who romanced Garrus were more invested in their happy ending? Or is it simply because fangirls are more apt to make fanart/fanfiction and post it? I personally think it may be both.

Note - I'm a fanboy, and I'm not trying to be sexist... I just know that most of the artists are female and don't think a lot of male Liara/Tali fans are going to spend time writing fanfiction and painting pictures. Thank you fangirl (and occasional fanguy) artists for giving me some awesome stuff to appreciate.

This is only an (likely biased) observation. Thoughts?

I think you can go to whatever thread for any LI you want and everyone is unhappy about the ending.

And concerning the fanfiction/fanart: there is a lot of fanart outside, I would not say Garrus has the most but I think his great romance arc and development in ME3 leads to more fanfiction/fanart than compared to LIs with a disappointing development like for example Jacob. I don't think there will be much fanfiction/fanart about him because people are unhappy with what happened to him. Same with Joker: since EDI/Joker is so much pushed in ME3 I think people are not so much in mood anymore to write/draw Joker/Shepard. Which is sad.

Well, not unless she ordered him to for the sake of the mission :(

I want a happy ending as much as anyone else, but I do like how the potential for tragedy hangs over the romances in Mass Effect.  Like Garrus says before Cronos Station, each mission could be their last.  Each bullet could be the one.  And both of them know they have to put the mission first, even if that means certain death for one or both of them.

The trials of a Battle Couple.

Sirella: With fire and steel did the gods forge the Klingon heart. So fiercely did it beat, so loud was the sound, that the gods cried out, "On this day we have brought forth the strongest heart in all the heavens. None can stand before it without trembling at its strength." But then the Klingon heart weakened, its steady rhythm faltered and the gods said, "Why do you weaken so? We have made you the strongest in all of creation." And the heart said...

Worf: "I... am alone."

Sirella: And the gods knew that they had erred. So they went back to their forge and brought forth another heart... But the second heart beat stronger than the first, and the first was jealous of its power. Fortunately, the second heart was tempered by wisdom.

Dax: "If we join together, no force can stop us."

Sirella: And when the two hearts began to beat together, they filled the heavens with a terrible sound. For the first time, the gods knew fear. They tried to flee, but it was too late. The Klingon hearts destroyed the gods who created them and turned the heavens to ashes. To this very day, no one can oppose the beating of two Klingon hearts... Not even me. Worf, son of Mogh... does your heart beat only for this woman?

Worf: Yes.

Sirella: And will you swear to join with her and stand with her against all who oppose you?

Worf: I swear.

Sirella: Jadzia, daughter of Kela, does your heart beat only for this man?

Dax: Yes.

Sirella: And do you swear to join with him and stand with him against all who would oppose you?

Dax: I swear.

Sirella: Then let all present here today know that this man and this woman... are married.

Thanks for the recommendations on the fanfics people, I got plenty to read now 8D
Also, ElectricZ - did you write A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Annihilation? I hope I'm not wrong, but I loved that fic C:

And a little question: I've only ever done playthroughs with FemSheps and they've all romanced Garrus (goddammit that turian is hard to resist). Anyway, my question is: Is that little hand pat/squeeze he gives my FemShep when they shake hands there specifically for the romance? Or does it happen anyway? I can't imagine it happening with MaleShep but I don't know, strong bromance is strong.

Huh. Not saying that you are wrong, just saying that I can't reproduce that. I have tested the following "setups":

1. FemShep, romanced only Garrus: Handshake
2. FemShep, romanced Kaidan, then Garrus: Handshake
3. MShep: No handshake
4. FemShep, romanced Jacob: No handshake

All ME2 imports, current patch, all mostly paragon (though the forth is probably going to go renegade soon). Don't really believe that things like alignment change that scene, though.
What I have seen in my games fits with what I've read elsewhere, i.e. that the handshake is romance-only.

If you've got a convenient save and don't mind to spend two minutes for "research" somewhere in the future, I'd be happy to read your results :)

Just to clarify: I am referring to the first greeting on Menae. With a Shepard who has an active romance with Garrus, even if there's another potential romance active, I get the handshake and the additional exchange "You are alive!" - "I am hard to kill. You should know that." The other Shepards skip that part and go straight to the "I thought you'd be on Palaven" part of the conversation.

Edit: Though, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if both would be possible due to a bug or whatever strange logic the game follows. On my last playthrough that I actually managed to finish, I saw Ash exit the crashed Normandy. Would have been nothing to wonder about - just that I had sent her to Hackett to serve as a war asset. So no conversations later on, no missions with Ash beyond the obvious minimum, but she seems to have the second-highest relationship score out of all squadmates. I reloaded to make sure I'd seen it right - and I had enough sleep the night before...

Edit^2: And PC / 360 might also differ, yes. Actually, I don't really care as long as none of my own Garrus-romancing Shepards miss the handshake ;)
With that war going on, some purely platonic friendship-comfort handshake is quite nice for non-romancing characters as well. My other Shepards envy yours ^^

I do remember the "hard to kill" line.

But no, I can't check. I'm on the 360 and rarely have more than three saves at a time.

As far as i know everyone gets a good ol' handshake with Garrus, but I noticed my FemSheps get two handshakes, when my FemSheps shake his hand the first time he grasps her hand and then puts his other on top of it, and there's a bit of a pause. I thought it was really sweet but I wanted to know if he does that with non-romanced-Sheps or MaleSheps. I might be remembering differently/reading into it too much ... Or both.

I might just do another playthrough with a MaleShep to find out, but doing the Mars mission is annoying :| But I do have another playthrough am doing, I'll pop back if what I've asked doesn't actually happen with a romanced-Garrus xD

If anyone here cares about Shepard and Garrus's babies, adopted or hybrid, please help keeping the "A Thread for the Little Spiky Babies" alive. It is currently overrun by people of the "Kill it with fire" -mentality.

Please help find more cute baby pictures and feel welcome to join the debate on the possibility of biological children for Shep and Garrus. Do we want them or is adoption better? Is space magic required or just science? All this and more if this thread could only get some more contributors...

Guys. Super-important issue here. How does one reliably ask Brandon Keener a question? See, I'm watching this show called Legend of Korra - a spinoff to Avatar: The Last Airbender, which you might have heard of - and there's this rumor that Keener is voicing a character in the series called Tahno who's slated to appear in next saturday's episode. I would like to get it confirmed or debunked from Keener himself since I don't have the patience to wait until may 5th to find out.

Hm, the baby debates make me uncomfortable for some reason. Especially the hybrid ones. Personally I always imagine Garrus and Shep adopting that lil Krogan. Or, if Shep is really dead then Garrus adopting a human war orphan and giving him/her his clan markings. But I don't like to think about it too much xD

Sensible ending first (which EC will hopefully be providing with its clarificiations) , then babies~

Find out if he has a Twitter or a Facebook or something? See if he has a PO box and send him a letter? Saturday isn't that long to go. I say just have patience :)

I didn't know Legend of Korra was airing now, I thought we where a while away from seeing it. Hope its aired/being-aired-soon in the UK.

Be right back making 'ending fix' images with 3ds max...  It's the least I can do for here...

Baldur's Gate really is a fantastic game - and, ironically, one of the reasons I was so upset about the ending of ME3. Bioware managed to create a convincing ending for the BG series, including possible drama, sort-of self-sacrifice, but also a happy end for most characters / romances, so I expected a similar end for the Mass Effect saga. Well, we know how well that turned out.

Your "example picture" is great, by the way :)
Since my Shepard(s) use another hair style I wouldn't use it for my own ending even if I got permission, but you've certainly given me a reason to look into 3ds Max myself.
Are you also creating 'movie files' from your images (as in 'animated screenshot slide shows to replace existing game ending movies'), therefore forming an "in-game" ending fix, or are these "extern" ending fixes, as in 'quit the game and look at pictures instead'?

Edit: Sorry for more technical questions... What about the lighting in 3ds Max? Phong / raytracing possible? And have you got access to glowmaps or the like? I'd guess that the example is basically the mesh / skeleton, combined with the basic textures and animated, but either the lighting is really weird or Garrus' visor does not shine blue ;)

Garrus visor glowy stuff may not be possible in 3DS Max, so that's why... same issue with me2 Garrus. I use just Student Version, which can get with a 30-day trial then can get some extra time with it maybe a year or more?

not sure about lighting and yes they'll look a little more flat compared to ingame counteerparts. lighting, someday I'll play around with it

And if you go back to ME2, he did say he doesn't think he's a good turian "good turian hears bad order, might complain but goes with it" .....
Partly also why I don't take the top choice then and instead the "it's nothing"

Thanks for the tech-update regarding light / glow in 3ds Max. Going to look into it - and if only to take my frustration out on something useful if the ending DLC explanation thing is disappointing.

If you happen to render further poses and if (and only if) it is not much work to switch the hair styles, I'll happily take any picture* with the ME1 / 2 default hair cut in any colour that's not blonde. Or just pretend it's somewhere in the future where Shepard has changed both cut and colour.

(*For personal use only, of course)

Edit: Regarding the conversation before the Cerberus base:
Shepard: I'll be okay. Just feeling wired.
Garrus: Even after our little performance?
Shepard: Guess you got my motor running.
Garrus: Shepard.
Shepard: You're here. That's all I need.

Regarding a few pages back- Turian motorboating a Matriarch: Brilliant!

...I kind of want to see Zaeed or Donnelly doing the same now, though. Mostly because they'd want to do it anyway. I wouldn't mind seeing Zaeed hook up with Aethyta, now that I think about it.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure my manshep also gets a handshake from Garrus on Menae. I'll have to check tomorrow.
