So, was reading this fic on the kmeme, yes, its NSFW but thats not why i'm mentioning it.

Garrus was sitting on the edge of the bed when she came in, toying with the little teddy bear in his hands. He moved to stand up when he saw her.

You realise how unbearably cute that would be as an artwork? I would commish it, but i'm not entirely sure of the legality of doing so (earning money off BW's characters), and i do not want to create drama in such a way.

Put simply, should i go through with it and leave it up to the artist whether they feel they should do it or not, or just let it be?

edit: I have a soft spot for teddys, got it from my grandmother i guess...

*stares at quote* That's familiar. *clicks link* Woah. =P

I've seen a lot of fanart commissioned on DA, so I don't think it's too much of a problem... But there's no harm in asking the artist.

If you do go through with it and the artist posts the picture on their DA or gallery, would you mind throwing a link up on here? =P I'd be really interested in seeing it.

I'd like to see that picture as well, if one is made. Garrus + teddy? Sounds both funny and cute, so I'd be curious what an artist makes of it.

Be sure to leave the author lots of encouragement and gratitude for sharing his/her work.  All he/she wants to know is that the effort is appreciated.  You can also find these on Mass Effect Kink Meme on livejournal.

I agree with this so much. It's really the only thing an author gets in exchange for spending hours writing fics, and man, do some chapters refuse to cooperate. Just finished one for a fill I've been working on that fought tooth and nail with me through four rewrites... I nearly bought myself a celebratory sundae afterwards :P But yes, reviews are an author's lifeforce! Leave lots of them!

It is the very least we can do.  If you read it and you love it, tell the author!!!  It's incredibly difficult work, and they deserve to have some sort of compensation for being kind enough to share.

Oh and guess what had a chapter added today?
 My favorite fanfic's sequel in the making. :o

***BTW flippedeclipse yould you post a link to some of your work?  I'd love to check them out (assuming they aren't NSFW fills).  :)

@Niostang: That turian baby is adorable! :D I don't know why, but it reminds me of Saren. Maybe the faceplate color. Or maybe because I drew a little picture of kid Saren in a blanket once.

I know that feeling, not with fanfic but with my novel. It's been fighting me for a while. >_<

Regarding the reviews: You're right, but you probably know that... Still, I don't like registering in random forums. What does Joker say again in ME, 'Call me paranoid'?

I'm the same way. BSN's the only forum account I have. I don't read much fanfiction either, but maybe if there's no NSFW parts and it's not too long, I'll check out this series. Because the idea of Shep and Garrus with kids is just too cute.

It's a great series, I'd recommend anything by Quondam. S/he is absolutely amazing at creating three-dimensional characters and tugging your heartstrings. My favourite one by him/her is The Shepard Code, but I'll warn you beforehand, it's a tearjerker :P

Ooh, I feel for you. I hope that gets ironed out for you quickly! Definitely not fun when the silly characters refuse to do things your way sometimes.

Yeah, sure thing. I've moved most of my stuff over to AO3 to get away from the drama going on FFN right now, but half of it is rated M :P Here are the ones that aren't:

Paradise - A short little family fic, basically my way of dealing with the endings lol
Undone - Fill for the kinkmeme where Shepard breaks things off with Garrus after Menae, and neither of them take it very well.
Colours and Promises - This one's a slice-of-life fic really, where Garrus takes care of Shepard while she's having nightmares.

Those are my more toned down ones. I'll throw this one in for good measure, called Unfaithful, as it's the one I'm working on right now. It's definitely NSFW, centered around MShep, Tali, and Garrus, and it has a tendency to make people a little angry :P It's based on some very uncomfortable topics, so I'd only advise reading it if you have really thick skin and don't mind Garrus being... well... evil :P I'm an awful person, I know, but the prompt really inspired me and it's oddly fun to write Garrus in a totally different light.

These three fictions nearly made me write something along the lines "I'm looking forward to anything you write next".
...
"Unfaithful" is yours? You have no idea how relieved I am that I didn't  actually write that particular sentence :D
Wouldn't touch that one even if I was paid to do so - promts (and fills) like these tend to make me wonder what strange things the authors (and readers) ate for breakfast.
*Cough*
Meant in a completely friendly and respectful, albeit slighly teasing kind of way, of course ;)

What I don't get, though, is people getting angry about it. Both title and description can be considered a fair warning, so anyone expecting rainbows and butterflies... Nevermind.
What I can't stand in fanfictions is mostly what I consider 'wrong categories / missing warnings'. Since I've seen a number of stories called 'drama' which I'd see as 'tragedy', I am now a little weary of the first category, too... and thanks to another story, I've spend one playthrough glaring suspiciously at Liara, before mentally kicking myself and concentrating on 'my' interpretation of the characters. Sure, there are other things which are nearly guaranteed to make me upset, but as long as the warnings are there in form of keywords, category or rating - no problem, no reason to get all bloodrage on the author. (S)He doesn't force me to read it, after all.

No, no, I wonder the same thing myself, after just about every paragraph I write lol. I'm certain I'll need to play through the series a couple of times after I finish writing it to remember what Tali and Garrus are really like again, but I'm really enjoying doing something a lot darker than my usual Shep/Garrus fluff, and it's definitely a fun challenge.

Yeah, I was... surprised, to say the least, that people were mad about the topic itself and not how I wrote the characters lol. I still feel bad for provoking those kinds of emotions in people, especially against my favourite characters

As for your points about categorizing properly, I agree that it can get a little confusing reading a story under the wrong genre. I think people don't do it properly, on FFN in particular, because the categories are so vague, especially when you have long fics that could fit into various sections. I definitely prefer the tag system where you can specify exactly what's in it. To be honest I didn't think too much about warnings and such before posting Unfaithful, but now it's made me a little paranoid and I make sure I have lots of tags for every story, even if it spoils things lol.

I have three, all Garrusmancers. My first "canon" was Naomi, second was Natalie and third was Kestral..

Naomi (colonist/war hero) i have roleplayed as "not incredibly attractive" in ME1, scars wrinkles (hell i accidently gave her a hooked nose in ME1) etc and no romance. However due to Lazurus she became a bit more attractive (read: i changed what i didn't like). I mean cmon as if Miranda wouldn't enhance Sheps features a bit when she had the chance. She was the most paragon of paragons in ME1, turned Renagon in ME2 and slightly more Paragon in ME3. She was also an Infiltrator in all three games (insert many a "headshot competition" puns here) and she destroyed the Reapers and lived to tell her kids her story.

The others are just different character class playthroughs, though pretty much matching Naomis dealings.

I hope so too. I feel bad for my characters, getting stuck in mid-fight scene when things aren't going their way.

And thanks for the suggestions. Maybe I'll get around to reading the happy-themed fics. After ME3's ending, I don't want anything sad. My poor favorites get killed or otherwise have their lives ruined, sometimes both, enough as it is. I mean, I put my own characters through a lot, but don't add a depressing ending on top of all that...

Terrorize69 wrote...

My main Garrusmancer, who I've already played through ME3, is named Kiara. (She's like a twin of Kim Shepard, my MainShep. It took a long time for me to come up with a name for her that sounded somewhat similar to Kim's, and only after I started calling her that did I realize it's even closer to "Liara." *facepalm* But too late, the name stuck.) Kiara's with Garrus only, no other LI. She's a Colonist/War Hero, Sentinel... and Paragade, I believe.

I also have a few others in the planning stages. Madisson ("Maddie", also with Garrus only), Cleo (Kaidan in ME1, Garrus in ME2/3), Naomi (Kaidan in ME1 - killed on Virmire, Garrus in ME2/3), and Hazel (Jacob romance started and ended early on, then Garrus for the remainder of ME2/3).

And before anyone states the obvious - yes, I have too many Shepards planned out. xD

@Envy: Naomi seems to be a popular name for Shepards! I've got a Natalie as well, but she's a Thanemancer.

My Femshep has the same background/career as Envy's. :D
Colette: colonist, war hero, infiltrator, and paragon, romanced Kaidan in 1 then Garrus in 2&3
She was my first "canon" Shepard. I've been struggling to keep to a new one.. (I've grown really attached to her.)
I swear, next I'm going to play a renegade manshep..but I'll miss romancing Garrus! :(

Naomi makes sense for a name..MGS! Plus, it's adorable.

There is a lack of Garrus Pictures on this page! :( *fixes that*

@Garnet: Awesome, another Colonist/War Hero Garrusmancer! They should start a club. And Garrus painting his colony markings on Shepard's face is adorable.

@Sorael.A:  It's amazing that those FemShep pics of yours were quick drawings. Really great work.

Lol totally agree, Naomi Shepard seems to fit so easily, rolls of the tounge easy, like they are naturally paired.... Just a shame I've used that name for my bi/les femshep lol... (Kaidan ME1 > Kelly ME2 > Sam ME3 XD )

Settled with Jessica Shepard, for my Garrusmancer, doesn't role of as easy but still a nice fit :) damn having Shepard as a surname, so many names feel akward next to it (I'm picky like that xD )

Just started the romance in ME2 with Garrus lol, Femshep forgets she's a women at times... Sitting on the crates in the main battery, legs spread open while wearing a dress lol... no wonder Garrus blushes.

Renegade redhead  Not healing the scars, will match Garrus's scars lol.

I got three :
My Garrusmancer is Lexane, Colonist and ruthless, redhead and Paragade (most of the time). She is of course my favourite.

I have a full Paragon Jane who romanced Liara in ME3, Earthborn and Sole Survivor.

And I have Ganaelle who I want to hook up with Samantha, because I think Samantha is too darn cute. Spacer and War Hero, and so far, I've been playing her Renegade. I can totally picture her having some kind of platonic love with Garrus, since she's exclusively into women.

Yeah i suck at picking unique names. Do not ever get me to name anything, not even your dog :P

When it came to that in ME1, i was total mind-blank. First thing that came to mind was Naomi, so it stuck. May have had something to do with playing MGS4 a few weeks ago. Would have considered Ruth (aka Ruth from Dragon Riders of Pern, just genderswapped) but that didn't really flow well, or Joy in reference to The Boss from MGS3 (my absolute fav female videogame character ever).

Could have had Trish or Mary for a couple of DMC references, but that would have been a wee bit too far xD

Lol I wouldnt say having a non-unique/common name is a bad thing, infact it fits in very well. Look at the other Humans in ME, David Anderson, Jacob Taylor, Ashley Williams, Jeff Moreau, Miranda/Henry Lawson. All common "old earth" names.

But I too suck at names, mainly cause I'm so picky lol I want them to fit in well with "Shepard", went through a list the top 100 girl names (lol) when I first made a femshep, Naomi caught my eye right away and just stuck.

You do know that the obvious question is "Why the hell do you write it, then?!", right? ;)
[Writing something different, exploring new angles, fulfilling an interesting promt... yeah, I know, no need to answer ^^]

Regarding rating systems: I can see your point that it isn't always easy to pick the "right" choice, especially if the system is similar to ff.net's. If I had to choose, I'd try to pick the "stronger" or "more offensive / more likely to upset people" category, with the obvious problem that it's a personal rating.

Some nice FemShep / Garrus pictures on this side :)
About the ME bodyswaps / mesh changes, as demonstrated above: Is it possible (in ME2 or ME3) to switch characters other than Shepard?

And @Shepard's name(s): I've got a pure-paragon (canon) Spacer / War Hero called Shadow who's with Garrus, another Spacer / War Hero, Seleya, who moved on from Kaidan to Garrus, paragon (but allowed to have more fun, like headbutting krogans), Earthborn / War Hero paragade Revan, who was supposed to wait for a brilliant new ME3 romance, but had her own mind and decided to romance Garrus, too. When ME3 came out, I was glad about it.
My Thane-romancing Moira will never see Bioware's ME3, only headcanon AU settings, but my Jacob-romancing paragon Shepard was surprisingly fun. With Liara on board she just *knew* about Brynn, became mostly renegade, 'seduced' Kaidan and left Jacob and the scientists at the mercy of Cerberus. Wrex lived, though, the only way I could kill the old Krogan would be per savegame editor.
