So I beat origins and soon after picked up dragon age 2. I'm Starting to wonder though how much i've missed by not playing awakening or any of the DLC. Lelina shows up in the end of DA2, but i'm wondering if that has anything to do with awakening though. Should I play awakening or does it really matter?

Leliana had no role at all in Awakening.

However, Anders is a companion in Awakening, as is Nathaniel (who you may see in an optional DA2 quest). So, if you care about backstory, you'd get that from Awakening. Overall, though, there really isn't much impact that I recall.

Leliana showing up has nothing to do with Awakening. There may be more, but off the top of my head all I can think of is the fate of Nathaniel (a potential Warden companion in Awakening), which is also linked a bit with the fate of the Architect (an antagonist from Awakening), but there's a bug regarding that where if Nathaniel is alive he will always mention the Warden sparing the Architect, even if he/she didn't. Without the Awakening import, I think you basically don't meet Nathaniel, that's the only real difference.

Someone else may know more.

There is also a quest that may or may not show about the attack on the Warden-Commander. Where in Act 1 you get to hunt down some of the conspirators.

Well, true, she's pretty cool - but she's not in DA2.

The preset backgrounds (non-imports) all have Nathaniel alive (which may be a bug...) and, depending on the background, a few other Awakening flags set. (I know because all my DAO saves got wiped by a virus before I got DA2.)

To answer the question: Awakening is like bonus material. It's fun and adds to the story, but isn't necessary to understand the overall plot. Anything that you have to know about Awakening is explained in DA2.

Fair warning: Awakening imports are still causing bugs, so even if you do end up playing it your imports will be messed up. (Like the Architect bug referenced above.)

I'd play it. Anders' character arc is made even better by seeing him in Awakening (pay attention to his banters). I thought Nathaniel's cameo in DA2 was great because he was doing exactly what I expected and wanted him to be doing.

And you get to play as the Warden and see some old friends from Origins.

The Architect bug's still not fixed? Aww.

Oh yes and you can kill anders in awakening which they repcon if yo import which is a big deal considering the part he plays in the plot so if you were the type that enjoyed DA2 but would prefer it not to have Lelianna for continuities sake for gods sake don't play awakening it will just make you rage

I'd play Awakening, just to meet Anders and Justice as separate beings. His personality (changes) in DA2 make more sense if you see where they both started, imho.

Plus, you get to meet Nathaniel Howe. <3
