I think it  would be a dramatic twist with game play perks but it would be awesome if some of the characters could develop a red sand addiction. Who do you think is most likely to have a skeleton in the closet? This game could get a whole lot more interesting.  I think this could further humanize Shepard as well. What if it gave a advantage as well as a substantial disadvantage would you take a virtual hit?

I highly doubt anyone on board the Normandy would- the crew and squad is far too disciplined to delve into that.

No biotic would probably mess with it; it seems like red sand's weak biotic abilities are the real draw, so that shuts out, what, half the crew? Between ME1 and 2, Thane, Liara, Kaidan, Wrex, Miranda, Jacob, Samara, and Jack would have no use for it, Tali's not going to introduce anything that could crush her joke of an immune system, Zaeed's too hardcore for drugs (although he probably has a funny story about it), Mordin's a doc and he knows better, etc etc.

Addiction? Not sure any of them would. Most likely to use? Morinth.

Harbinger. It'd explain a lot:

*SNOOORT*

Harby: "Heh... ...Woah!... Heh heh... Hey, Shepard... BEND TO ME!"

I would to cary some red sand with me to temporary boost my biotics during a fight. Could be limitesd like grenades. Red sand really makes biotics strong.

Edit: or was it Minagen x3? Or is it the same..

Here's a lovely story about Zaeed and red sand.  Worth the read. NSFW.

I can see Jack doing red sand all day long though.

Those poor guys n gals that are always in the lounge area. They have to be so bored they are snorting, drinking and shooting anything they can find on the ship. What do they even do? My only guess is they are the team who drop ammo and waist high cover barriers on every map our elite team is about to enter. In that case, they are the true heroes of Mass Effect. Our team would be nothing without the concrete road divider insertion team.

Maybe Joker could be addicted to Stims or something. Hallex seems to be a favorite recreational drug that Jack may be experienced with.

And not all addictive disorders apply to drugs. Liara gets addicted to being a creeper or maybe Miranda could go on an eating binge or something. Catsuit... exploding...

Jack and Morinth definitely. Perhaps a somewhat curious Mordin.

Grunt. I mean, think about it, young Krogan fresh out of the tank, curious about the world...it would explain his little episodes where he 'sees red' and headbutts the hull of the Normandy. Withdrawal!

*Sniff*

KROGAAAAAAAAN!!!!

*rushes an army of Blue Suns, Eclipse, Collectors, Geth, etc. in a sand-induced high*
