The "we fight or we die, that's the plan" is almost as bad as that scene in Halo 3.

Marine: "Ma'am, squad leaders are requesting a rally point. Where should they go?"
Miranda Keyes "To war."
Marine: "No seriously, how about a physical location."

LOL oh lord, I completely forgot about that line. But yeah, it's exactly the same (and I remember thinking the same thing when I first heard it). I'm sure the brainless, fratboy bros were pretty pumped about it, but I was just left shaking my head.

As far as I understood it the whole "we need a plan" dialogue is done on earth just as the earth is attacked, hence they don't have time to do anything but fight their way out before formulating a plan.

Citation, please?

No, of your source for saying that the whole "we need a plan" dialogue is done on earth just as the earth is attacked.

Without context, the line sounds really dumb and cheesy.

We don't know where or when it is said.  Why do you need a citation for people assuming it happens on earth, but no citation is needed when it will make the line said as bad as possible?

Every one of these extended exchanges people have created with "no, we really need a plan" "and you are a commander?" etc. are assuming this to be in the worst possible context.  But we have no context so we have no idea if the line works or doesn't work for the situation.

"We fight or we die, that's the plan!"

Without any context that line sounds completely retarded

But it might make sense, depending on how it is used and how that conversation plays out. For all we know Shepard could have just been expressing frustration with some craven who was him-hawing about taking aggressive action against the Reapers.

Unless I'm mistaken, that's part of the exchange between Anderson and Shepard, as they're running trough Seattle with reapers invading.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts. On a small scale this line might make sense if Shepard and Co. are just trying to survive the intial invasion to make it to a shuttle and escape into space. On a large scale, when Shepard needs an intelligent way to defeat an invading race with superior technology, this is a terrible, terrible plan.

Either way when I first heard this line I almost cringed.

Inspirational speeches are never really going to tell the plan.

Shepard is an inspiration to the resistance, not a general or admiral.

Yes it is cheesy Hollywood, but on the other hand I think people would fall asleep if he gave epic speech Winston Churchill style.

Those kinds of gaffes always make me cackle. It's especially funny when I'm in a movie theatre with a bunch of other people, and everyone else is psyched about it, as if it was some kind of clever retort by the character.

Misplaced One-Liner Syndrome: when your best shot at a poetic moment is making the character say or do something that makes zero sense, you might want to work on your script.

Of course, Shep's line was taken out of context; I could see him saying something like that if he was arguing with the Alliance brass or a politician.

Would you all really prefer the banal way of speaking more people in real life use?

No.

Would you prefer Shepard to have horns and a cape, unlike people in real life?

I think he's referring to the fact you have two choices with Reapers:

You fight them
Or you die.

Oh that note:

*Squad still waiting for plan*

Shepard: We do it like Jenkins!

I agree that the statement is a little cliche. A bit overused sure, but no use complaining about it.

Clearly, here is a quick analyzation. If you don't fight, you die, done.

The line is a bit cheesy as it just makes Shepard seem full of bravado.

Something tells me Shepard could do with a little reading on the works of Sun Tzu. I imagine Shepard is basically capable of formulating only two types of plans.

Plan A: GO GO GO!
Plan B: Hold the line!

What I would have done if I was going for more then a one-liner.

Prothean:"We need a plan to stop them!"
Shepard:"We don't have time to plan! We fight back or we all die! We have to hold our ground where we can or else retreat. Besides that... we'll gather all the forces we can and then take the fight to them! That's our plan!"

Okay not really much better, but at least it's something.

In Shepard's favor - Sun Tzu never had to deal with galactic garbage disposals.

"We need a plan to stop them!"
"The time to plan is past!  Now we have to act or lose everything!"

The line is fine. I can picture people b****ing and moaning (not unlike this thread) and Shep needs to pull them into line. It spells out the grim reality, there is no retreat, there is no compromise. It isn't supposed to be a plan, it's a gather your courage and get into rank statement.

If that line does come up,I would use only if the situation involved you had got every upgrade and technology to strengthen your forces and also had allied all the races. It could be used if some people still question whether we can still beat the Reapers even with all the upgrades and new tech and a massive army and fleet.
