Well, she was on a special assignment in ME2, so I guess when you bring back results you get promoted.James Raynor wrote...
It seems Ashley has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant
I do find it strange though because IIRC the Williams family were barred from ever being officers again because of the Shanxi incident where her grandfather General Williams had surrended to the Turians.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but you seriously have no clue how the military works it seems:huh: I recommend reading up on the Canadian or United States military if you're really curious because these suggestions are absurd.maybe a new rank for Shepard that still keeps the 'Commander' in it such as 'Supreme Commander'
lol you can't expect everyone to be knowledgeable in military ranks and it's sci-fi cool ranking names should be allowed. Be lenient man
I think the 'supreme commander' is probably taken from a science-fiction tv serie

Actually, Shepard's rank is Lt Commander, meaning Kaidan holds a higher rank.

Unfortunately, here I believe only Shepard fits the bill. Neither Ashley
nor Kaidan are willing to believe the Reapers are coming
Yes they do. Ashley even talks about it in ME1.

There's that old argument again. Listen, Shepard deserves a promotion more than anybody (ME1, nuff said), and who ever heard of a Commander being in charge of a ship anyway? He is the captain, no doubt about it, and his rank should reflect that. As to the other argument, that Spectres being outside of the Alliance Navy, that doesn't make any sense. Shepard was working for the Alliance at the beginning of ME2. He never left.
Actually it's not uncommon for Lt Commanders or Commanders to be in charge of smaller ships, like frigates, patrol boats, stuff like that.

Shepard and his/her crew know that the Reapers are coming because they were with him/her the whole time during the events of Mass Effect

While it's true that the Normandy is small compared to other vessels it still is a legendary ship in its own right

"Supreme Commander" is a position, e.g. SACEUR (Supreme Allied Commander, Europe) or equivalent to the commander-in-chief of the military of an entire state, e.g. the Kaiser in Imperial Germany's official military title was oberster Kriegsherr ["Supreme Warlord", lit., but effectively "Supreme Commander"/alt. der oberste Kriegsherr], and the Swedish King holds the same title.James Raynor wrote...

It is definitely not a grade, much less one for a field-grade officer like Shepard.

According to Tali's dossier in ME2, her serving with Shepard to defeat Saren earned her her adult name, not the Geth data that Shepard gave her during the incursion missions. I'm sure that it would help Ashley as well, possibly some recommendations from Anderson or Hackett too.Jayman1337 wrote...

I hate the American system. Putting rich spoiled 22 year olds in charge of experienced Sergeants makes no sense and just gets people killed. A piece of paper shouldn't decide who is or isn't officer material. I'd rather have everyone go through Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training together so that the officers are as skilled as the enlisted and understand what they have to go through. Sort of like how the Navy SEALs make both enlisted and officer go through BUD/S together for 6 months before splitting them up.
Gah, I'm off topic again >.<

Agreed... After all he/she has done it's time to move up from Lieutenant Commander: if they want to keep the "Commander" flavour that's fine, but promoting him to Staff Commander won't change how he/she is called and at least shows he/she has recognition for what he/she has done... :/
As for the matter of Ashley's rank, I believe that simply makes her "even" with Kaidan...
Kaidan jumped up TWO ranks since ME1:
- Staff Lieutenant (his original rank) -> Lieutenant Commander -> Staff Commander (his current rank)
And yes, in the Alliance he outranks Shepard now...
Ashley instead only moved up one:
- Gunnery Chief (her original rank) -> Operations Chief (her current rank)
I'm going to go and guess they simply moved her up another rank and she is now 2nd Lieutenant...
Are you sure about this? Because I didn't notice that Kaidan is promoted to Staff Commander.

Yes, he is Staff Commander in ME2. As for him outranking Shepard, that may or may not be true. It isn't entirely clear how the vocational divisions and levels (of even what Kaidan's is) affect the chain of command. At any rate, I cannot find any rank of "Staff Commander" in any modern day military that I can compare it to.snfonseka wrote...

Staff Commander is the grade above Lieutenant Commander; it basically replaces the rank 'Commander' in the American officer grade system. It's consciously modeled on the Canadian military, apparently. (Which annoys me a lot. It would've been much cooler if "Staff Commander" was indicative of a kind of parallel staff officer/line officer hierarchy like in the Imperial German armies.) It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for a line officer to hold the grade "Staff Commander", but there it is. So, as of Mass Effect 2, Kaidan holds a higher grade than Shep does.KiraTsukasa wrote...

Of course, his grade is irrelevant, because position is what determines the capacity to give orders. If Shep's the CO of the Normandy, and Kaidan is a member of the crew, Kaidan takes orders from Shep, regardless of their respective grades. Only when officers have no chain-of-command relationship to each other do rank and grade enter the equation.

But military won't place a lower grade officer as leader when there is a higher grade officer involves in the same mission.

Sure they will. Wartime situations have worked that way historically for lots of Earth armies. And a galactic fight against Reapers is nothing if not a wartime situation.snfonseka wrote...

Think about it pragmatically, too - how likely is it that anybody other than Shep will be the commanding officer of the Normandy? You think the Alliance brass is going to touch that relationship?
