Uh, the Normandy can't actually land a la Virmire is what EDI is referring to. As long as there's a docking clamp involved, everything's fine.

EDI wasn't on Virmire, get your facts straight

You actually resurrected a year old thread just so you could show someone up and be a smartass?  Wow.  BSN classic there.  Not to mention that you utterly failed.  Get your facts straight?  Lol.

In a conversation with EDI, she tells me that the new version of the Normandy requires a shuttlecraft because it's "too heavy to land on the surface of a planet".

I'm assuming this means the Normandy SR2 is not really capable of coming close to the ground, that it has to remain in space all the time.

But in a recent game demo, we see the Normandy SR2 fly overhead to drop explosive charges on an army of Cannibals (Huskified Batarians) and then fly close enough for Shepherd to directly board the ship.

If the Normandy is no longer capable of landing, how in the world does it do this?

And it has been stated several times that Reapers are the only "large scale" ships that have mass effect technology allowing them to land on solid ground.

I also found it puzzling that the Normandy SR2 could "land" on Illium, where it physically docks with a tower.

if this puzzles you then the added EC scene on earth will make your head explode...

What a question. Don't for get the SR2 did crash once not even on a planet but on a space station that is closer to the galaxy core which it's gravity will be stronger than a planets but still manger to take off. The way I see it, the SR2 can land on any planet but because the shuttle were design for quick insertion drop its advisable to use the shuttle more than have the SR2 land. Even the SR1 only landed on one planet that we know off.

I can't remember who said it (I think it was in a codex entry) detailing how the Normandy SR-2 cannot LAND on a planet's surface, they never said anything about entering a planet's atmosphere. I think it all comes down to the fact that the landing gear isn't strong enough to hold the weight of the ship (Even though it should be weightless with the Ezio Ship Core) and that is why whenever the Normandy docks within a planet with a gravity well that the use of docking clamps is needed.

It can crash land, but I have never seen it do anything else besides dock.

This actually isn't an inconsistency. The notion that the SR2 couldn't land on planets was a misconception by fans.

For starters we actually see the Normandy land on the surface of a planet in Mass Effect 2. (Illium)
Also in ME2 if you activate the "What is this area of the ship" node in engineering overlooking the shuttle bay, EDI will tell you that the shuttle is for landings on high gravity worlds.

With the extended DLC it  also lands right near the citadel beam....I take it as plot magic if the script calls for it the ship will land. I mean the Battlestar did it when it had to make a crazy rescue attempt I don't really care much on this issue I've got more issues with no suits and breather masks in space, retconning characters, and dropped themes ME3 has done.
