The word hate sure is thrown around freely in these parts.

One things for sure, no matter the reaction of people there will be others who feel they need to whine about it.

I can only speak for myself obviously, but for me, it moved Bioware games out of the "buy immediately and unseen" category (which is the only reason i ended up with DA:II). Bioware has always had a solid name in the business for making quality games. They...well... dont anymore, not with me.

To me this was one (small) step removed from robbing people blind (which is a much celebrated EA practice, which i guessed finally rubbed over to Bioware as well *sigh*).

I'm getting so sick of this company.

Like I said, most of my aversion to present-day Bioware has nothing to do with the quality (or lack thereof) of their games: It's all about how they treat their customers.

If they continue with this patronage and contempt, soon all I'll be doing is coming on here and asking people why they're still here.

Some people are already acting like abused wives. "Oh, this shiner? My husband just slipped. He was rushing for work, and his elbow somehow caught my face. Hee hee ... He really loves me. He does. Sometimes he just gets so wound up. It's his boss's fault."
"But, Ma'am, he tells me it's your fault. You're just not willing enough to follow in his trail-blazing."
"Oh, well. Yeah ... It is. I really have to change. He's right, you know. This shiner is quite nice, actually. It really makes the whites of my eyes pop."

The main problem with DA2 was that the story was uncompelling and utterly boring, nevermind the reuse of assets. Over more than 1/3 of the game you are concerned more with getting rich or die tryin' (Deep Roads expedition).

That was... interesting (?) Bejos. But I honestly don't look at it like that.

I see it more simply.

The developers want to capture a new audience while justifying their actions and paying lip service to the old one.

It's not new, nor something that's personal. I'm not sure you're doing anyone any favors by using such an analogy.

How did EA/Bioware fail their Customer Relations 101 course?

You don't attack your customer, mrcrusty. Attack the old product in order to make the new one look shinier, sure. Don't attack your customer.
If you (the general you), as a customer, support that kind of action from a company ... I just don't get it. "Abused housewife" is all that comes to mind.

There is a bona fide trust between the customer and the company that should be maintained. I have no respect for companies that breach that relationship. EA/Bioware lies, extorts and propagandises, and people keep going back to them. I see this in almost no other industries. Can you see Coca-Cola or Pepsi treating their customer with such blatant contempt? Did Coke ever say, "Our customers aren't ready for the innovation that is New Coca-Cola"?

It's really hard for me to respect people who are satisfied with or are apologetic in the face of such action.

EA/Bioware need to hire some new marketing/PR people, at the absolute least. And people who dislike Bioware's direction but are willing to put up with it ... Well, it's your life, but I'd suggest you re-examine it.

As for those people who enjoyed DA2. Great. I'm very happy for you. Really.

I also find domestic violence very "serious". This is simply the most expedient, effective comparison to make. My comparing a company's treatment of its customers to a woman's treatment by her abusive husband should in no way be seen as meaning to trivialise spousal abuse.
I could have used any number of other comparisons, but this comparison most effectively gets my point across.

Are you ignoring the point just because of the comparison? Because there's no other way you can refute it? Okay.

Pretty much stating the obvious. Although I do believe they could get fans back if ya know they actually take longer than a year to develop the game.

I prefer an analogy that's appropriate within the context of the point you're trying to make. Not one that is beyond overexaggerated intentionally for "shock value".

That's something demagogues and political commentators do.

Like I said, the analogy isn't going to do anyone any favors.

If I had been making the point, I would've used an analogy to fans of a sports team. Not spousal abuse.

"Except sports teams aren't primarily constituted to sell products."

How would you make that analogy, exactly. I'm curious. There's no bona fide relationship between a fan and his or her sports team. Sports teams are there to win games. They don't have customers.

Please lay out the analogy for me.

If you were to go this way, it would be a comparison between, say, Bioware and CDPR, and how DA2 and TW2 "fight it out" in a match, and how Bioware didn't do their best job.
But then Bioware turns around and blames the fans for the shoddy work they did? How is that any better?

"My favourite sports team failed because of me! They told me so during their ESPN interview."

???

Why would you support that sports team?

FYI - Kinda recall the part when New Coke was finished, Coca-Cola seemed to grab a huge part of the market for what they were already producing. Just saying....

And when one is looking for apologies, and improvements in marketing and PR, perhaps one should not build straw men as abused.

Bioware does respect their fans; tis the others like the Whiners and Haters they may not adore as much. IMO.

Okay, so comparing Bioware to Coca-Cola is pretty valid. They had a great base-- RPG enthusiasts-- and then went in a new direction.
When its base didn't like Coke, Coca-Cola went back to making old coke. It also branched out into other avenues.

Did Coca-Cola attack the people who didn't like New Coke, though?

I should say that where I live, Coke made a mistake at their manufacturing plant and produced toxic coke. Some people became seriously sick.
For the next five years, Coke sold their product at 33% [Edit: Actually, it was more accurately around 25%] of its sales price. Coke also took full responsibility for the end product.

Do you see Bioware doing that? No? Oh, okay.

So Bioware really doesn't care at all about its customers.

No; don't see the correlation between this straw man either; just thought I would remind folks that after the dust-up, business was much better for a product they were already making the entire time.

Bioware already offers discounts and freebies, and some dislike this, too. Hater's hate.....
