As in finding parts for weapons will make them more effective rather than discovering upgrades?
Or will we have both?
So, will weapon mods replace weapon research?

Or has there been no mention of this?

You mean transplanting other weapon parts onto your current weapon?

There's been no mention as far as I know. All we know is that weapons have stats and the mods change the stats.
That said, I do remember vaguely seeing resources on the screenshot of the pause menu.
(I think this may be in the wrong forum, as well. You might get a better response in the ME3 General Discussion board)

I think they can both exist at the same time, weapon upgrades would upgrade a certain weapon type in general while mods care applied to individual weapons, but I guess if we get mods and they do away with research it'd be okay as well... as for official word I guess there's none yet but the fact that planet scanning is still a feature in ME3 confirms research is still a part of the game whether weapons are included or not remains to be seen.

A good combinations of parts looting on the battlefield and research to unlock the most rare and powerful mods seems to be a great possibility imoh.
