I don't know why people hate Hawke because his decision don't matter much. That's an issue with the story not an issue with the character.
It's not the lack of decisions so much as the lack of goal, ambition, motivation, or direction. Plus he/she is just obnoxious. Do you have any idea how many people Hawke killed? Want to talk about your mass murderers. It seems like every time he/she had a problem, he/she solved it by killing 10 or 12 people, then 10 or 12 more people, then 10 or 12 more people after that before finally moving on.
Hawke's problem is he's a voiced protagonist with an unvoiced protagonist's lack of identity. It works for Shepard because he/she is a marine and thus personality-less. When you play the witty Hawke, he just comes across as a sarcastic ass with no constructive ideas or input etc. etc.
New protagonist. Let's have a compromise. Why not have multiple origins to pick from and still keep the voice-overs (which unfortunately still means only humans).

Even if you weren't fully voiced, you would have history and character from your playstyle and choices.
That would be for the best.
Leave the fully voiced PC for Shepard and the ME series.
Give us back more variety and true RPG gameplay, decisions and all the rest with Dragon Age.

Good answer
One of my biggest complaints about the voiced PC is that it makes it that much more difficult to imagine my different characters as... well, as different characters.

Which is why we need to ask -- every day -- for the option to turn off the PC voice.ishmaeltheforsaken wrote...

Option 1: Mother returns from the grave complete with the neck stitches and leads the chantry in a bi-sexual necrophiliac cult that needs to be overthrown. To achieve this, Loghain is re-animated and provided access to a new Krogan developed laser rail gun which you need buy as DLC - the only way to complete the game that occurs solely on a three room boat.
Option 2: Dog. Turned viscious from the constant mindless killing of his master, in a fit of violence turns on Hawke and in the first 30 minute animated cut-scene devours him and goes then on a mission to locate Flemeth who can turn him from a dog into Doctor Who. Travelling back in time he seeks to convince Hawke to choose a different option than Kirkwall. Instead we get caught in 36 levels of killing Daleks on board the Tardis.
Now that would be innovation.
You sir, are a comic genius.

Get rid of the fully voiced main character, and instead spend the money saved from not having to hire voice talent and do more QA/testing, add more locales and items, and polish the writing, dialogue, and main plotline.
Maybe give some new writers a chance so we don't get the same basic characters that have been with us since the legact Bioware games.

There are people who obviously want their warden back, there's some who want Hawke back (and Bioware seems tempted to use Hawke again) but I think it would be interesting to get everyone's view about it in a thread specific for the topic rather than bringing it up in other threads who they'd like.
Opinions? I personally never want to see Hawke again, but that's just me.
Who do you want to be the protagonist for DA3?
A protagonist who I can called me or some dude who I want to be. A fully customized first person character with many meaningful consequential choices that can shape a lot of different stories.
I never want to see Hawke again if he/she even exist in present days. So far none of us knows wheter he/she is still alive or already dead. What kind of nonsense RPG player character is that?

I want my GW back. Do not tell me he or she can be dead. Anders, Lelianna, Oghren, Justice could be dead too...

Ok well since Flemeth will probably say "you can't be a dragon", I'm gonna stick with a new character (preferably from other countries like Anderfels or Nevarra... just not an Orlesian).
Even though I love my canon Warden to death and while *I also like my Hawke*, the most I want from them is nothing more than a cameo in future DA sequels. If not, at least give a conclusion to their stories... I don't think anybody as important as them can just go "missing".

If I have to listen to 20+ hours of haughty French accented voice acting over the course of playing through DA3, I will likely have to hara-kiri on myself to save my sanity.
