Upsettingshorts did when he made a sardonic comment toward people who had a different point of view than he did, I simply chose to address why I disagreed with his comment. You're welcome to disagree, of course.

If it makes you feel better, I'm pretty sure he was just making fun of IanPolaris. He still loves you, I'm sure, there's no reason to get all upset.

I don't see why you think I'm upset. I provided an opinion in response to an earlier post in this thread.

Can this ONE thread be used to talk about the book and the writing instead of having to suffer through the "but DA2!!" rants? ONE THREAD?

I ask myself this every time I sign into BSN and the answer always appears to be no.

If you want to let the matter drop, I have no issue with it.

You responded to a joke about mages in general. With a DA2 complaint complete with video clip example. I am sorry, but that is stretching.

In any case, I guess there is no point discussing this because you will insist that it was a DA2 specific comment you were responding to. And I will regret ever returning to the forums. *sigh*.

Have at it, buddy.

Like you, I assumed that the male child in Mr. Gaider's book was Alistair... however Mr. Gaider quite nicely corrected me of my error. He said the the male child in question was not Alistair... which led me to believe that Maric actually had three sons with three different women.

Is this correct Mr. Gaider?

I have made no such clarification.

Ok... I went back and pulled the particular post and I stand corrected again- you would neither confirm or deny whether it was Alistair or not... but the timelines do seem to suggest that it is not Alistair....

So... is it Alistair or not? Is there three sons or just two? (I have a feeling that I am going to get nothing but some cryptic answer.... or no answer at all) Posted Image

It is a DA2 example because his sardonic comment was made in reference to how some fans feel about Dragon Age 2, and he's made his own POV clear repeatedly. I simply responded to it.

I'm still focused on how Shale will be in the book. Ignoring everything else because it's not important. Shale. Shale. Shale. Shale. Shale..... Shale...... Shale...... Shale.....

That he's made his own POV clear repeatedly suggests there are other more relevant threads to dump your frusterbatory ****** in, doesn't it?

Except I was responding to the comment he made in this particular thread. Do you want to continue this back and forth, or would you prefer to let the matter drop?

I wasn't trying to be amusing, nor did I find it amusing.

Here is the bottom line. People have complaints. They repeat the same points over and over again. They sometimes (Not Lobsel- he has been quite polite here) get rude and act like idiots. Others will claim they are serious critics and thoughtful complainers and what they are offering is constructive, damn it!

The first problem with constructive criticism is that just because you think you are being constructive, doesn't make it constructive.
Just because you repeat something all the time, doesn't make it constructive.
Just because you yell it, doesn't make it constructive.
Just because you post it everywhere, doesn't make it constructive.

If the writers have heard it, then they'll either think it has merit and implement it. Or if they don't - you can text them, land up in their raid sessions, paratroop into their meetings, replace one of the little kids Laidlaw uses as a footrest with yourself, take Epler hostage, whatever- NO DICE. If the writer is a professional, he/she has a better understanding of the realities of the situation- time, budget, resources- and your suggestion/complaint however valid or brilliant may have no bearing or may.

And if you are being a jerk, well no one is ever going to listen to you, you get seen as the idiot who keeps spouting inanities and you even reduce the chance of people with legitimate issues from being heard.

Now, if you are a sane and balanced fan (I liked some stuff, I disliked some stuff, it is all a game anyway and I am not at war with anyone), you come here and are faced with this avalanche of "Gaider/EA/Laidlaw destroyed all that is intelligent/innocent/happy in me!". You either back away slowly, or stand up for what you think is unfair maligning. Then you get dubbed a fanboi just like a mythical group of others who think Bioware is made of gold and unicorns frolic in their halls.

It is all ridiculous. All of it.

David Gaider has written a book. It will be released this year. I have enjoyed his past books. I am looking forward to the new book. I also think of games and books as entertainment, and my main goal is to enjoy a few hours of feeling uber and then returning to my boring life of intern abuse. I am not intending to rate Gaider on his prose usage, or expect that because Alistair did something I didn't like in the game, Rhys and the book will totally suck. I am expecting to be entertained and amused. I also expect that others will not be as entertained and amused because the book may not meet their criteria. That is fine. I am hoping people can agree to disagree in a civilized, grownup manner instead of becoming juvenile about it. I am not optimistic.

My warden did something else! Cullen did not do anything!! I killed Wynne!! I didn't have the stone prisoner! You know what? My warden died killing the archdemon and then rose from the dead to become The Zombie Queen of Ferelden. THAT is way more awesome canon than anything any of you ever did! Do I insist that whatever David Gaider comes up with is lesser? No. That was my story. This is his.

Well it does rain templar men, after all. I'll bet DG is just the kind of guy to push two agendas with one nefarious design decision.

Also, ^^ great post up above.

Great post indeed. Be it DA or ME (which got me started here), these points hold true in my opinion.
I truly enjoyed reading this, thanks.
"That was my story. This is his." <- especially this.

This is such great news! I'm a big fan Mr. Gaider. Can't wait to read it. Anyway who cares about critics. I have never in my life been so enthralled, enchanted, and flat out addicted to a world and it's characters like the one that you have created. Don't ever stop.

Writing a novel won't take away from anyone working on DLC, I promise.

This post deserves a medal. It takes one writer and maybe a cover artist to make a novel (+marketing like this).

The programmers and designers are still at work on the DLC.

If I buy the book, will it finish the story you didn't finish in the $60 game? LOL

I'm under no illusion that I'm some fantabulous writer who can do no wrong. I do my best, and the most I can ask of myself is that I improve... and that's going to happen with practice, not via "helpful" critiques.

Just please, please, please don't use that "single bead of sweat" phrase over and over again.  PLEASE.  There really are other ways to describe people suddenly feeling very self-conscious/anxious.

If you stop riding canned descriptive phrases and write a few transitions for once, I'll enjoy Asunder a lot more than the other two books.  Sometimes getting there is cool and interesting too.  Also the hardest part to write IMO because you gotta be really clear on the steps in your own head, and they have to make sense, cause you can't just allude to some vague "stuff happens".  That and 10,000 people will immediately jump on any inconsistency of any kind whatsoever.  And 10,000 more will say "but why would X do that?  That's a stupid way to act, why didn't he just do Y?" and you can't just slap them.  Very frustrating.

I am hoping Rhys is a gay character. There are too few fantasy novels with gay male leads (hardly any really) and David is good at writing those characters.

Now everybody is bi.

Give a try to CLAMP mangas if you want gay/bi important characters.

I don't read a lot of manga, but have watched card captor, tsubasa reservoir and code geass and most of the characters (especially the leads) were straight. I am talking about traditional western fantasy novels anyway though and hence my desire for a gay protagonist.

I just hope that Wynne doesn't meet her death here. I'm hoping she shows up in another game! Her death just might break my heart enough to fulfill the developers' need for tears for quite some time.

... Uh oh... Tell me it's too late to make changes in the story, right? :pinched:

As another note, I'm glad her son's name is Rhys. I absolutely love that name. I can't wait to read about him!

I would love that as well!
