Well, it's a smart idea for players like me who never would have become obsessed with the game if you couldn't play as a female character. As it is I discovered ME incidentally, but had FemShep been on the cover I would have known immediately that it was a game I might be interested in. I am guessing the percentage of female gamers out there is relatively miniscule, but hey, why leave the dollars on the table if all you have to do is change the cover a bit?
This.
I passed over ME many times because it seemed like a generic action game with a generic testosterone fueled MC. It was only when I found out it was a an action RPG with a female main character I decided to pick it up. (And not from any official advertising, from word of mouth) Perhaps if the gaming industry would acknowledge there are female gamers out there they need to try and reach they'd have more women playing their games. Instead of marketing everything to men and then excluding female players on the grounds that women are the minority of the player base. It's self defeating.
