like it or not mass effect is a brand, and you use an icon like shepard to market said brand. wasting time and resources appealing to minorities on stuff that should be used to highlight the game to everyone will hurt the game, not help it.
Thats a very debatable issue. The fact of the matter is Bioware have decided to alter an established strategy and cater for a new market. Femshep has lots of appeal. Hence the massive fan thread she has and threads appearing frequently about her. So they have decided to try and attract new gamers by appealing to a broader coomunity. If Bioware thought that it would hurt the game by showing her in marketing they wouldnt do it.
Regardless they have changed their strategy and several posts in this thread seem bitter that its happened. Me and lots of others are really glad it has happened and show Bioware is still flexable and listens to its fans. Even on things we thought were set in stone!!
So yep thanks again Bioware.

Does that mean instead of having the N7 logo on the box, we have femshep instead? Because of all the complaining?
Please someone say i'm wrong.
Very similar to the ME2 CE but instead of the Collector on one side of the metal DVD Box, it will be FemShep.
The N7 logo will be on the front of the carboard slip cover the same as the ME2 CE with the metal DVD box will have Sheploo on one side and FemShep on the other.

I don't like this at all. Cannon Shep should be the only one on the cover. If they're gonna have femshep, they might as well put my custom Shep on the cover too.
They won't put MY custom FemShep on the cover, too. There is a canon ManShep and probably they'll make a canon FemShep, too. No one is being privileged.

I COMPLETELY AGREE w/ you Captain Crash!!!! It's a step forward. The market for female gamers is growing and this move does show that Bioware cares and listens to their fans. Thanks Bioware!

It's in Bioware's best interest to take the femshep feedback from the established playerbase into account, all of them brought in their personal experience about discovering the game and learning how it could also be played as a woman, which did matter a great deal.
If they take the time and hard cash to hire VO talent like Hale's, it'd be bassed-ackwards to not exploit that and actually 'sell' her.
As to the 'but there's only one canon Shep, then they might as well stick mine on the cover"
They're not adding anything to the game that wasn't already there, more attention to the choice of which of the two you play can't honestly be classed as something negative?
Another thing, the assumption femshep would only hold greater appeal to female gamers is utter nonsense, as many male gamers can no doubt testify to.
For every argument against this, there are as much ifnot more in favor.
Bioware must have seen merrit in the idea, otherwise they'd never stuck resources in pursuing this.

Seriously, it's the back of the cover and one trailer, out of all the marketing material featuring Sheploo. It's not like BW is getting rid of him or marginalizing/ignoring him (as they had done with femShep, btw). This is good progress, even if it's a small step.

Still, it's good news. Femshep is a strong character so it's good that she's getting some representation. Can't hurt.

Cannon?

Oh you mean canon.
Well here are news. There is not canon Shepard but one that player makes.

Eh...I don't really care. Though the Femshep army (that is smaller than it realizes) and their ever persistent complaining will be missed. Though the focus of a lot of complaining has shifted from Femshep to the s/s romance stuff. And it would be nice if they hired a model for Femshep's face. However...here is hoping for some a view of Kaidan as well.
Why would anyone complain about this?

But hooray for FemShep getting the Lady Hawke treatment. If there was one thing that irked me terribly about FemShep's treatment it was that she didn't have a unique default look to her.

I just reread the Tweet and saw that it was going to be for the CE edition. In that case, I change my tune and support this idea. I can imagine that it will be like the ME2 CE with Sheploo on one side and a Collector on the other, except instead of the Collector it shall be Miss Shepard. I approve of this.Bobad wrote...
So long as the female Shepard isn't the one that appears by default when you select female in the previous game, they used a model for male Shepard, why not for female Shepard?.

@Mesina...both sides are complaining. Both sides (for and against) get way too heated and make excessive demands. I personally won't play them but I support the inclusion and I'm glad that they are taking gay gamers into account now.
I was going for complaining about FemShep trailer and be on cover.
I mean why?

You'll be surprised by how "casual" the casual market is. Your points (both "a" and "b") are actually incorrect. The first point may hold some truth, but the second is plain nonsense - it's not mere physical customization when you talk about what gender you play as. People care about that much more than you are apparantly aware of. And coming from this, how do you know what appeals to a few and what doesn't if it hasn't even been commecially pointed out before?
Oh, and by the way - adding an additional face to an extremely limited Collector's Edition which is bursting with all kinds of goodies doesn't mean Bioware is trying to furiously emphasize Femshep presense, while "wasting" manpower they could have used for whatever it is you're suggesting. It's a Collector's Edition. No harm done. All right?
bolded. uh, yeah it is - what else could it be. and it is minor - equally as important is class and background to the actual game - in fact aside from romances the game absolutely does not care what gender you are - your class/background have far great impart.
it appeals to few because the stats back it up - few people play femshep - that's inarguable (yeah she might have a thread of hardcore people here but that's nothing compared to the millions who bought the game). for both games previews pointed out you can play as femshep, the main site says it, i'm sure it says on most websites where you can purchase the game, too. all of which makes no difference to the metric stats.
the collector's edition, being exactly that should have unique things for all the fans, not just something for a small percentage of them - yeah there's some other stuff, but in lieu of a mega-ultra edition wouldn't it have been nice to have had something really unique on the abck of the case - a reaper, perhaps (being the arch-villains and all and keeping continuity with the previous game's CE). after all putting femshep up there is no different than iconic shepard - neither is necessarily your shepard - so what's the point?
in the end though i just wanted to make the point that whilst this fanservice is nice for some, why couldn't the effort have been put into something nice for everyone? a PS homespace, or XBL themes, etc. that can be enjoyed universally?

Yes, keeping continuity across the game's cases is a super-important detail.
Especially when
A) They don't even keep continuity for the game itself, and
Also, the "point" is representation and acknowledgment of a part of the fanbase. As you said, it should have unique things for "all the fans", and some fans want femShep acknowledgment.
