i can't reach the old forums anymore. Too bad as there was lots of useful infomation there. I guess Bioware doesn't care.

Same here. A little warning would have been nice.

Reality is that they do not care about NWN2. They make no money off of it. They only host these boards in the hope that if we see "Dragon Age" enough we will eventually buy it.

Lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas.

These new forums have been a useful experiment, but with only a tiny fraction of the contributors the old forums had there will never be more than a tiny fraction of the NWN2 knowledge here. That didn't matter so much when you could still search the old forums and link to them. Now that that is no longer possible it just became a whole lot harder to create NWN2 modules and campaigns. Especially for beginners.

Game over. Thanks Bioware.  I hope the few gigs of forum space you freed up is used for something very valuable.

Wow. Too bad for anyone who still referenced anything there. We probably all guessed this would happen eventually, but it's still a big loss.

They killed those too.  I understand a lot of the old NWN content can be downloaded in the NWN Omnibus available in the vault. I posted instructions on how to use the Google cache feature to access the old content in this thread.

Regards

How hard would it be for Bioware to copy the old content into the new forums? I mean really, it could be more than a couple hour database copy effort...

Very hard, I guess. There's a good chance they used a different database layout in the old forums and surely the need to renumber user ids, topics, posts and forums.

Edit: Fixed spelling error.

Really? This is the sort of task that could be done with a competent database engineer in a few hours. The differences aren't that complicated, and programming the transformation should be a snap.

Clearly no. You need to merge more than 725.000 topics (Chris Priestly's lock on MotB forum was topic 725692) into a live forum. That's not a trivial task.

Beside that, if I remember right, the old forums offered different formatting options. So this needs to be addressed too.

I would expect at least 20 man-days for this task. And you need at least a database engineer, a webapp programmer and a third person doing quality assurance.

Thrasher, almost every time i am tasked with a programming project i am told it's easy. I have learned being told it's easy by non programmers is a sign it's not. We have no idea what formats the old posts were in, and they have no way to link up the old accounts to the new accounts. They probably wanted to delete the baggage of all the users which just don't use those forums anymore, and there was likely duplicate user names with the EA registrations.

We knew this was coming, the real important stuff got copied here, or put into the nwn1 omnibus, or it's on the citadel. There were people talking about scraping all the forum threads to copy the verbiage to a database, but not sure if that happened for nwn2. If there is something you now realize is gone, you can use the google cache for the next 3 months to copy it to a safer location. I personally had enough time to make sure what was needed was copied, sure we lose some things, but those are nothing which cannot be quickly recreated just by asking a question, and you likely will get better answers at this point in time.

Give them a break, you cannot keep hosting things year after year for games you did not develop and on forums which were run by pretty lazy gnomes. At some point that software became obsolete. They clearly said they were going to take the old forums down, but just did not define when. These folks are not evil, and have treated our community with nothing but helpfulness and support far beyond anything we got from Atari, and even now are hosting us on these new forums.

I am actually hoping, in 5-10 years that Hasbro switches publishers to EA, and hire bioware/obsidian/ossian or similar to come back to the original concept behind NWN. If NWN2 got half the marketing effort that dragon age got, and also the time to release a finished product, it would have been a much bigger success.

You are overthinking and engineering the task. Formatting can be stripped out. Easy. You don't have to "merge" topics, just create new ones. Automation should be able to handle 725692 topics easily.

The point is that the data should be serachable; formatting and mapping from old to new users would be nice but unecessary. A lot of programmers miss the essentials by getting lost in the details....

The warning to all users was the forums you are now on. Did people really expect them to keep both going?

They did actually say that they would do that at some random point in the future. So we had many months of warning.

Nonetheless, tis a sad day...

The less than 100 people who are reading these forums now are hardly experts and even those that can claim some expertise do not have anywhere near the sum of expertise that has been lost. Fewer people to answer questions with less information available to them does not increase the quality of responses.

I agree. Most of the information was unsorted/unorganized. I don't think the topics here capture even a tenth of what was on the old forums.

Perhaps the server only crashed but it looks like they are gone when they rewamped the site for ME3.

Perhaps some could ask for the data and put the content online on the citadel.

Helpful tips from nwn2forums.bioware.com that helped Axe_Edge

I had a problem with Anya waking up. I completed all of the requirements. The following helped me:

Vaeliorin:"Friday, 02 November 2007 05:20AM
Alright, I've finished the whole Coven thing. I go to talk to Anya and she gives me the same old 'Gannayev you must've come see me now, or are you the other Gann' speech, no matter what time I come to see her. She's always wandering around the house. I can't enter her dream."

This quest is bugged, at least for a number of people. Apparently she's supposed to go to sleep, but never actually does.

Anyway, this happened to me. The easiest way to deal with it is using the console.

Hit `
Type DebugMode 1, hit enter
Type rs ka_enter_dreamscape(), hit enter
Type rs ga_jump_players("b14_wp_from_b13, 1, 0), hit enter
Type DebugMode 0, hit enter
Hit `
"

Worked like a charm, my thanks."

I'm going to start posting stuff that helped me. Should this go down in the self-help?

I would suggest putting it on nwn2wiki

That will be there forever ( business model is about just having pages and selling ads so they like anything you type in ). If they shut down we can export that out to another server.

Putting it here just moves the problem into the future when these forums are obsolete.

Other option is the citadel, and DNO can move it around if it's in the wrong spot there. That is more targeting dev types.

Does this apply to the old Baldur's Gates forums as well?

FYI, there was a snippish comment made about this in the NWN1 forum, by Chris Priestly, that was far from being responsive to the fretfulness this has stirred up there.

Wow, this seriously stinks. RIP... Even as I type this I'm using Google Cache to find useful stuff there.

EA works wonders ...again!

This is exactly typical of the 'new Bioware'. Unless we are actively monetizing them on THAT game at THAT second, they really don't care. At all.

Gah! The instructions/links for NWN on Linux are gone too. Oh noooooo.....

At least I can save the cached version from google before that disappears as well.
