The new forums did not need to spell the complete disappearance of the former content.

This is disappointing. At least an offline archive of sorts, if possible, would have been a nice move.

At the same time as NWN2 is on sale on D2D, potentially attracting new payers and builders... and a few bucks for "Biowarts"... (I'm guessing today's profits alone could have paid for the hosting of the old forums for a year and more...)

A significant loss unless they're going to make it available through other means. But with Priestly's post over on the NWN1 counterpart to this discussion, it seems unlikely.

On the other hand, the fact that they a) maintain any forum for a game from 10 years ago, and B) maintain any forum for a game they didn't even make, and c) both a and b are for a publisher they don't do business with anymore, I guess maybe we should be happy with what we've still got.

Wow. I'm surprised. From an SEO perspective that was just plain stupid. They just threw away thousands of pages of unique content for a lame-ass sales page. That's a lot of domain authority down the toilet. They should have used those pages to link to their main site. That's a lot of link juice. Over time, as webmasters take down the dead links it's going to cost them even more link juice. And when Google sees how many bounces they get when searches bring up the page they're going to crush the page's relevance score.

Just plain short sighted and stupid.

I found one single comment, with no measureable content, that Chris Priestly posted yesterday or today in NWN1. It had no information in it at all.

Aw man, I think there go my NWN1 CD keys too! I don't have the manual they came in anymore. Shucks.

As long as you have your .ini file. You should be able to see your cd key anytime you like.

Good morning out there, get a whiff of the coffee (well, maybe too early for that yet). It's all related to account security:

But will the old forums come back? I'm gutted as my nwn1 cd keys were on there and I was just thinking to copy them down a few days ago because I live in another country now and my game is back in my home country. Sucks if I can't get them back :(

Since it is really far more of a "Site Help" kind of thing, at least it is now that we know why it happened, I would say to keep a watch on the Site Help Forum to keep track of developments or to ask about the latest information, same as where my link points.

Ah, well I don't have NWN1 installed at the moment, so... hopefully this issue Gorath has informed us of (thanks) will be resolved.

So is this what Chris Priestly was talking about? Very mature, Chris, 18,000 accounts hacked and you hide it because you get offended by a single comment.

Chris Priestly sent an apologize about his reaction in the NWN 1 Forum.

Still no more information but a it looks like that they're working hard to bring the old forums back.

Edited: Fixed spelling errors.

It certainly makes me think much more highly of BioWare/EA that they did this out of concern for clients of their current/former games, rather than out of a decision that we'd already been squeezed dry.

Though I've recently been disappointed by EA/BioWare's lack of concern for supporting their game communities over the long term, what they're doing here certainly improves my opinion of them. Their effort could in fact serve as an example to other companies who are wondering whether us pesky fans are worth it.

That's great news. I was terrified that Bio had succumbed to a terminal case of stupid.

I got the email, and clicked on the link but it just sends me to here - I can still play NWN2 online, but it says my account was deleted. What should I do?  How are we supposed to make new accounts?

Yea, what do they mean "create a new account" for the old site, when the old site is no longer available to make accounts? Doesn't make any sense. I can't register my old NWN games on this Bioware Social site.

Thats what I'm confused about... I can still play it and login in the game, but I got the email?  Not sure what I can even do.  I can't change my password or anything.

I'm confused about the email too. How do we change our accounts and passwords for NWN1 and NWN2?

As far as I can tell. We can't change the old account. However, we can guard are Bioware/EA one. Since there are no official NWN forums up at the moment we cannot change anything. If they get the situation settled then they will let us know on how to change or reregister.

At least that is how I look at it now.
