I just picked assault rifles as the bonus weapon for my adept recently, and got to use the Mattock for the first time. Great gun.

Tie between the Mattock and the Widow.

At heart I have always been, and always will be, a rifleman. The Mattock is a rifleman's battle rifle. An instrument for a thinking soldier and for those who eschew the concept of "accuracy by volume of fire". I'll leave the assault rifles for those that do prefer that method.

The Widow is a prime example of a sniper rifle. Extremely accurate, and seriously devastating, especially when upgraded.

Honorable mention to the Viper, Mantis, Phalanx, and Carnifex.

I don't get the fuss about the Locust, the Tempest outshines it by far.

Not in my book.  I hate the Tempest.  I'd rather use the Shuriken (and I do use it, as a sidearm, after I've taken new weapon training on the collector ship).  On paper, it's base DPS is slightly less than the Locust's, although the Tempest will pierce shields and barriers faster due to damage modifiers, so it's effective DPS vs shields and barriers is higher than the Locust's.  The problem is, the Tempest has excessive recoil and bullet spread, so you have to fire in bursts, which really cuts into the amount of damage you can put on target in a given period of time.  The Locust doesn't have this problem, however, as you can point it, hold the trigger, and have almost all your shots hit.

uh.....Geth Plasma Shotfun has the BEST DPS in the whole game (if charged), longer range than any other shotgun, target seeking feature AND it works like a charm for vanguards
