Technically, Shep is a zombie or revenant, if he actually died prior to Cerberus working on him. If he was just close to death, then he's just very lucky ;) ... Or a cyborg. But a golem (traditionally, I mean, I don't count Dragon Age's version) never was human to begin with.

Culture and technology must advance in tandem, or nothing but misery awaits everyone.

At least, that was the undertone of Mass Effect 2.

i don't think that the serie have a meaning, but i think they more work with self discovery. how do you think about things and what do you consider important. that is to say if you actualy played the game with your morales and not as playing a role.

Racism? Artificial Intelligence? Recovering after war? Sacrifice?

I think the message is that we must work together or die.

Blue = Democrat = Paragon (pro-diversity)
Red = Republican = Renegade (racist)

I don't mind it too much most of the time, but when the writers have game characters spit the word "politician" like it has a bad taste I find it rather hypocritical.

In Canada blue is the colour used by the conservative party and red is the colour used by the liberal party.  Bioware is based in Alberta which is a predominantly conservative province.

Bioware may be based in Canada, but their target market is not.

Aaaand why does ME have to contain some kind of ...message... to bash the player over the head with? I need the story and the lens flare, not some message. I'd listen to my answering machine if I wanted one.

Because almost everything has a message, every single succesful story has something going on behind the story layer. And messages is how we get some of our morals, through films books whatever. And did I ever say you had to be bashed over the head with it? Hell, you could say there was no message, but others will find one because they take something different away with them from the series.

I wouldn't say that the series has an overall message to it, though it does have very strong themes. In the first Mass Effect, much of the game dealt with power and danger of artificial intelligence and what would happen if it turned against us. Granted, this was not an original idea, countless movies (Terminator series, Matrix series, 2001: A Space Odyssey, etc...) and games have done this before. The Geth were so visually striking however, that their story with the Quarians really stood out.

In Mass Effect 2, the game really dealt with the morality in the use of technology. A person or society can utilize technology to improve itself or some other person or society but do we lose something in the process? The Salarians gave the Krogan advanced technology which led to the Krogan rebellions. Shepard could keep the Collector base but that will undoubtedly cause problems for Mass Effect 3. This was a very interesting theme, and could have been applied to Shepard himself. He is obviously partly cybernetic now, and ironically, is now more like the Reapers (part organic/part machine) than he is human. He owes his life to technology and machines while other machines are trying to destroy him and his species; an interesting dichotomy and one that could have been explored in ME2, but alas, no luck.

It doesn't really have any meaning for me it's just an awesome action/roleplaying game series with a good story

The meaning? RAH RAH FIGHT THE POWAH.

Really though, I think you can take away all sorts of meanings from the game--we have a diverse cast with plenty of different views on life. I've always liked Legion's ideal of forming your own future, but it's only one small part of the game, and not necessarily the 'underlying message'. In fact, I would go so far as to say there IS no 'true' underlying message--go with what affects you the most.

It was about not being a racist.

Also politicians won't do anything, so you should go save the galaxy yourself.

For me there are a few messages:
- Do not give up, no matter how hopeless the situation.
- Overcome any differences and work together.
- One person CAN make the difference.
But I'm very curious to see how the story with Reapers will play out and what their ultimate reasoning is.

I think these are pretty good interpretations.

Was just interested to hear what people believe the meaning of the mass effect series is, or what meaning it has for them.  And by meaning I am talking about possible philosophical or social messages or implications raised by the series.

Religion leads to destruction. Indoctrination leads to destruction. There are no gods, we must find our own way.

Or maybe this: to earn our continuous existence in the universe ruled by the evolution, we must face the death in the ultimate fight. Only the strongest survive.

Art is just a perspective of reality. That it has to convey some deeper meaning or message is a widely held misconception perpetuated by people who think their opinions matter.
