Yes, I want him.

That's why I made James Vega Appreciation and Support thread.

His last name's Vega, which is stupid enough for me to dismiss him outright, even knowing nothing else about him.

If Big Ben's name were actually "Big Ben," it'd still be better than "Vega."

Vega's ego is enough to support ten men, he needs not your 'approval.' <3

My only problem with Vega is that he is not Big Ben.

*grumble*

But the picture from AA does looks like Big Ben. And if my memory serves well, it was told "Vega is not a sniper" or even "Sanders is not a sniper" - so it actually may be "he's a tank who occasionally sniped". Or even parody on "Geth do not infiltrate"
For this character... I don't normally use tanks and prefer casters, but his rating in my eyes is strongly dependent on his well-writenness

I didn't particularly want any new characters, it feels a little intrusive this far into the series. That certainly doesn't mean I'm not willing to give him a chance. Human or alien, it doesn't matter, a good character is a well-written one. It remains to be seen if Vega is worth hating or loving.

For all we know he could be cooler than Big Ben.
Actually, nevermind. Big Ben is too awesome

I have to admit, my first thought when I heard about James was "he sounds boring".

I want him inside me.

Seriously, though, I never had a problem with Ash, Kaidan, Miri, or Jacob in the previous games. Why would I have one with this guy? If he's useful, he's useful.

If I really want a sniper in my party I'd use garrus.  Or legion, if he's available.  I probably won't be using Vega.  My ideal party combination will be some combo of Wrex/Grunt/Miranda/Tali/Liara/Legion depending on what's available.

I still prefer alien squadmates, with the exception of Kasumi in ME2, but besides the jokes because he'll be the newbie of the team, I don't see any valid reason to bash him as useless character. Not yet, at least. A pair of new squadmates will be necessary, considered that 1/2 of the returning squadmates can be dead and that there's a lot of "hurr durr" people who killed on purpose many of thethe previous squaddies pretending a complete new team. A few new faces are a good compromise for satisfy the biggest number possible of players.

So well, I can't say I'm exicted to see Vega, but I knew that him, or someone like him was coming, and I'm not going to whine/rage/whathever because of that.

OK, OP. On the off chance that you are not a troll, I'm going to comment on a few things I read in your post.

TheTWF wrote...
We don't want squadmates that are boring, and human squadmates are ALWAYS boring.

To you. Not to everyone else. I like my human squadmates.

TheTWF wrote...
In a scifi game full of interesting and exotic xenos we want to see THEM, not something we can see by looking out a window.

So, you see fine asses like Miranda's and crazy-ass psycho biotics like Jack everytime you look out your window? Where do you live?

TheTWF wrote...
The only human squadmate that people liked was Zaeed.

So...by 'people', you mean Zaeed fans?

TheTWF wrote...
Oh, and he's a sniper? So's Garrus. Guess which one ME fans will use?

Where are you getting this from? If it's because you think Vega is the sniper from the announcement trailer, that's already bean debunked.

I'm going to give BioWare the benefit of the doubt; I've liked all the squaddies thus far except Ashley and Kaidan, so there's no reason to think I'll automatically dislike Vega.

I can see where it might be irksome, simply because he's filling a space that could otherwise be occupied by an old teammate, but I think having him around will be good for new players. Additionally, it can provide interesting context; while I'm sure Vega is a great soldier, he's also probably very new to this. In the first two games (particularly ME2, where we deliberately head-hunted the best of the best), we're surrounded by people for whom war, in whatever style, is old hat. Vega is The Average Dude who's going to be thrown in face first into galactic war. Should make some interesting observations.

This is all your conjecture at present, and very opinionated, now i respect your opinion, but with all due respect, i dissagree with it. I am willing to give all new characters a chance. Now in a lot of my ME2 play throughs yeah Jacob did "rot on the normandy" thats not to say i didn't enjoy the conversations with him, infact i REALLY did enjoy them, bro is your home boy by the end of the game, your gonna get wild and spill some drinks on the citadel. I say give Jim a chance, and try to be a bit more forgiving of the developers, they do a great job with these games try and show them you appreciate it a little more :)

I have no doubt he'll be a well-written character, but a reaper invasion doesn't seem the best time for the savior of the galaxy to have to put up with a rookie. Hopefully he was top in the class at everything.

While James Vega fills the role of "newbie" for players new to the Mass Effect series, I'm pretty damn sure BioWare won't spoil it for him and make his role absolutely pointless.

Fact of the matter is, we're not going to get an entire squad of people we want. That'd be naive of us. Think back to ME1 and ME2. How many of those characters would you have left for dead (or just plain ignored)? Not everyone's entirely likeable, some downright hateable. Trouble is there's no pleasing everyone. And what you might consider to be "the best damn squad ever" might be "the worst damn squad ever" to someone else. We all have our opinions and some of us prefer one to another.

You say "1 is less than 2", I say "2 is less than 3". If you don't want to use Vega for your squad missions, fine. Leave him back on the Normandy. Hell, no matter how many times I play ME1, the only time I ever take my human squadmates with me is during the Eden Prime mission and first visit on the Citadel till I recruit Garrus, Wrex and Tali. I mostly took Garrus and Tali with me everywhere and ignored everyone else like they were cancer. Still, it didn't stop me from engaging in conversation with them (save for Ash who seemed to mistaken "making conversation" for "let's slam dunk it").

Point I'm trying to make is, don't bring Vega along if you don't want him. Some of us will, others of us won't. Chances are I'll probably take him around every now and again but I'll mostly focus on having Garrus and Tali with me as I always have done.

I'm sure this Vega will be a decent character at least. He is a Bioware companion after all. But honestly I would of picked any former squadmate in the series over him and I doubt my opinion will change when I actually get to interact with him. It makes the series more worthwhile to finish with the characters that help you get there and not FNG's.

And OP the only squadmate you mentioned I would call boring is Jacob. Jack and Miranda alone I find more interesting than the majority of alien companions. So try not to state your opinions as facts.

I'll just say this for the record. If Vega is the reason why ME2 LI-capable squadmates (i.e. Thane, Jacob, Miranda, and Jack) are not available as permanent squad members by the time I'm playing the game, I'll be pissed. Also, I outrighted hated Zaeed, Grunt, and Samara.

I hope he's an interesting and enjoyable character in his own right and not just a device for new players to catch up on the story with. I'll be seriously disappointed if most of what he does is ask questions about things we should already know. That makes for a pointless and ultimately hollow character.

I do tend to prefer the alien squadmates because I like finding out more about their culture, history, etc. But I did really like Miranda and she was useful in a fight so she ended up going on pretty much every mission. If Vega is interesting and useful he'll get to go on missions, if not he'll stay on the Normandy. But knowing that characters like Liara and Garrus will be returning I'd probably favour them over any new character.

I'm actually not thrilled about having any new characters. I think we have enough interesting characters with back story that I want further explored. Games have progressed so far in story telling that they need to start being treated like books or movies. What I mean by that is that you don't generally relegate half of your cast to cameos and bring on fresh faces in the final act of a trilogy in traditional story telling. Maybe it's just me, but if I'm forced to choose between breadth and depth...I'll take the depth.

I agree, I think the humans are boring. Especially the male humans...James Vega is not going to be any different, because he's just another alliance marine. Why can't we get a man that, I dunno, was a colonist and had to go through a lot of **** to be where he is now. (Sort of like Colonist Shepard.) Or a red-sand addict or something...Anything but another BORING alliance marine crap...

I can understand those who like the current crop of characters, but change is inevitable. I am a huge fan of Jack, but I fear despite her rumored makeover she will likely just be a temp squaddie. And I am sure there will be a lot of barbs thrown around because fans of those "temped" will feel shorted on their favorite character. I am sure some will hate Vega from the start as well, just because "he got in instead of Thane" or whatever, but at least give him a fair shake. Give the guy a Scottish brogue and a good sense of humor, and all the haters will forget what they were talking about.

With a name like "Vega", I imagine he'll be having a Hispanic accent, not a Scottish one.
Also, the Scottish accent is a "burr"; Irish accent is the "brogue".  ;)

Do I *want* another squad mate, no I do not.  I don't feel however that Vega by himself breaks ME3.  The games not even out for almost 9 months, and I'm not going to jump to conclusions or let the forums makes me jaded about him. If you don't like 'em - leave on board or don't recruit him if possible.  Over reacting, especially right now is just childish.

Don't be a stickler, people dislike it. And it is the 22nd century, roll with it.
