Yes. BioWare wanted him. I see a pattern here: Kaiden (Virmire), Jacob (vents), James (some nasty death involving a word starting with V)...

Dial V for useless human male death? ...Perhaps Vega offs himself, dont know if BW would put suicide in the game though(cept jacobs dad but im assuming that was for the lulz)

Did i want him? No, does he look rather cool and able to hold his own? Yes.

He shall be a welcome addition to my team as long as i don't hear that something like wrex or another former squadmate was made a cameo as he filled there role on the team.

Agreed. We got, so far, only one representative of the species in both Mass Effect 1 and 2. I'm sick of my squad having more humans than aliens ¬¬

No, I didn't want James Vega. Why? because Bioware flaunted us something way cooler with Big Ben.

Let me demonstrate:

"Hey man! Here's this awesome character: He's a british sniper that can pull headshots like a boss from hundreds of meters away even when his target is concealed by smoke AND that's while his life's blood seeps away!"
"Really?! Man, that sounds awesome! Is he playable?"
"No. You get this football player instead. He'll ask you about Space trivia all the time."
"Wha-"
"And we made him look like the guy that tossed you in your locker in high school."
"Oh what the f-"

If they wanted us to warm up to Vega, they really should have at least given him his own trailer and allowed us to see him in action instead of just releasing a picture of him with a blank expression on his face. Yeesh.

So I posted this:

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/325/index/7897784/1

And now all of a sudden almost everyone loves James Vega.

I was willing to overlook the design which was really generic in my opinion. Then the whole "everyman" soldier description made him sound really uninteresting. The fact they brought in an newcomer for first timers instead of a better known NPC for instance doesn't further his cause. Why would I need a guy who doesn't know what were dealing with when everyone else on my crew does?

To make matters worse I eventually find out his voice actor is Freddie Prince Jr. An actor so bland that scenery could upstage him. I'm not so much afraid he'll be terrible, as there's enjoyment to be found with a bad character, rather i'm worried he'll be stunningly mediocre.

Oh and the announcement of the "From Ashes" squadmate makes him even less important.

I am abit unsure on James Vega considering as you said he is meant to give the perspective of new players in the series and him looking like he is in jersey shore.

But I am interesting to see what he is like considering how much different he is to the other characters (never know might become a more interesting version of Jacob)

but I like a mix in my games (i.e. not all human and not all alien), which I tended to have in my squad was Miranda (increases the stats of the squad or whoever loyalty mission it is or a choice between Samara or Garrus

Oh, you and your silly little "we" thing again.

EDIT: Holy gay cupcake, this thing is old.

Garrus>Vega (He has a proven track record and leadership skills that are as good as Shepard's, plus he is everyone's favourite Turian). If anything happens to Shepard id rather have Garrus lead than Ash or Kaiden simply because Garrus has way more experience in leading people and the fact that he respects all species makes him a top candidate.

Vega will be overshadowed by the VS, Tali, Garrus, Liara sadly.

Yes.  I have always wanted Vega, even before I knew he existed.  BLAST HARDCHEESE.

More seriously, though, I've always liked most of the human squadmates.  Kaidan and Miranda stayed firmly planted in my squad all through ME1 and ME2, so don't assume that "all human squaddies rot on the Normandy".  No one rots in my Normandy more than Tali; she only ever came out for her loyalty mission.

I'm actually not thrilled about having any new characters. I think we have enough interesting characters with back story that I want further explored. Games have progressed so far in story telling that they need to start being treated like books or movies. What I mean by that is that you don't generally relegate half of your cast to cameos and bring on fresh faces in the final act of a trilogy in traditional story telling. Maybe it's just me, but if I'm forced to choose between breadth and depth...I'll take the depth.

Yes.

And no.  No way do I want Vega.  Hope he likes rotting in whatever section of the Normandy he's assigned to.

Depends entirely on his personality and usefulness in combat. I tend to bring people with me that compliment my Shepard's weaknesses, so that I have all my bases covered for certain missions. And even if I don't bring him anywhere, I'm still willing to give the guy a chance.

Personally I think Vega is great and seems likeable enough from what I've seen. I can totally see him being my new bro on the Normandy & I love Freddie Prince Jr., only thing I dislike about him is his overly muscely appearance  For me I'd take him over the likes of Liara & Tali who won't be taken on any missions during my playthroughs.

Mordin/Miranda or Garrus/Zaeed....

Err. don't put your opinions in other people's mouth. I for one didn't like Zaeed at all and Jack was actually alright. Don't know how Vega will fit in, but from what I saw on that voice cast video, it seems like Freddie did a nice job, and if his personality is on par with actions that I'm going to take, all more reason to bring him over.

I'll start out by being blunt. In most people's games James Vegas will rot on the Normandy. Why do I think that? Because that's what happened with Ashley, Kaidan, Miranda, Jacob, and Jack.

You'd think by now the devs would have some understanding of it's fanbase by now, with all the Tali fanservice and in-joke during LotSB. We don't want squadmates that are boring, and human squadmates are ALWAYS boring. In a scifi game full of interesting and exotic xenos we want to see THEM, not something we can see by looking out a window. The only human squadmate that people liked was Zaeed, because he was designed to NOT be boring. Even though he wasn't that involved in the game compared to the rest we got a personality, a past, and a understanding of him out of him.

But Vega isn't going to be Zaeed. At E3 he was confirmed to be an everyman, a veacle for new players to understand the ME universe (yes, apparently ME3 is aimed to draw in new players, because that's how trilogies work! Way to blow months of assurences to ME1 fans out of your ass. This is right after the DA2 fiasco to boot). So basically for anyone who has played a previous game he's going to be a bore, he's going to bog down the game, and he's going to take a squadmate slot that could've been given to a xeno that's automatically attention getting or, if you absolutely have to have a human squadmate, SOMEONE WE KNOW. Someone we're capable of caring about?

Oh, and he's a sniper? So's Garrus. Guess which one ME fans will use?

You're right in that, I didn't want Vega and after I try him once, if he doesn't absolutely rock the house, he'll never leave the ship again.

BUT...

I loved the human characters and I think that many other people do as well.  If we're the minority, so be it.  We're still part of the ME audience.

Please don't make assumptions for me in the future.

vega is a little out of place on the Normandy.. but i believe bioware put him in the game for the people who did not play the other two game, so he is like said new players who know practically nothing about the mass effect universe.

but if it helps he was chosen by Anderson personally to be Shepard's guard while he was in custody.

Did we WANT Grunt? We had Wrex. Did we want Miranda? We already had Ashley. Did we want EDI? Or Jack? Nope. But we love them regardless. We never want something until we know it's there.

I like humans & aliens. Miranda Is my fave followed by Grunt, Kasumi,Garrus etc. And I started to hate Vega the moment they said he was there to be the "tank" and replace the lack of a Krogan squaddie.
