Judged as a successor to Origins it is very disappointing.

Did you curb your expectations before release, Zanallen? If so, I wish I had, too.
I am pessimistic, so I go into everything with lowered expectations.

This is not what Id expect from what used to be the worlds no1 software house.
to say I'm disappointed is an understatement

Some people are just disappointed it wasn't another origins?
There I fix'ed the OP.
I honestly think many of the flaws people see are magnified by the fact that the game wasn't Dragon Age: Origins 2. When a person buys something that isn't what they expect they are more prone to see flaws in it as they are looking for things that don't match up to their expectations.
I had very limited expectations of the game going in. I wasn't a big fan of DA:O so seeing as the game was different from DA:O was a plus for me. I downloaded the demo and enjoyed it so I picked up the game.

As an individual game; It'd be a good entry for a new companie's IP...for the last generation. Unmemorable music (besides dat ending theme
It's very subpar considering the capabilities of modern games. I wouldn't say it's a bad game, just one that could of used something more to it and that it's sequel would be good.
But that's the thing. It IS a sequel, to a rather complex game with an established aesthetic, diverse gameplay and multiple subplots and dialogue branches that make each game a decent experience and...still mediocre music (It's just not memorble or epic enough which is what DA should be)
This isn't from a new game studio either, Bioware has been in the game for years now. A general rule is that sequels improve from a game. Removing or dumbing down features doesn't qualify for sequel (if you say that it's more streamlined, it isn't. There is a difference: for example, replacing weight restrictions from BG to a numbered inventory system is streamlining. replacing inventory management between characters with preset items is dumbing down)

I didn't have the same expectations as a lot of players I think because I make a point of avoiding marketing hype for games beforehand and also I didn't have time in my life to play Awakenings.
I feel that a couple of asset/content-rich DLC could put this game right back on top personally.
It has a strong foundation in its engine.
I also feel that 6-7 years development time for an RPG now may be a mistake if that time is spent on the engine instead of content. Look at shooters in which the shooters of today are really the same as the ones in 2006. You can put 7 years of work into a shooter engine to simulate the appearance of hair and smoke more realistically, but it doesn't add significantly to entertainment value.
For instance FF13 had a great new engine with yet again an all new levelling up scheme but a lot of people would have been happy with the level up scheme in 12 used again and content that consisted of more than a hallway and battles. Of course PS2 graphics would suck in a PS3 era but you get the point.
Infinity engine for instance lasted for so many games...the companies need to stick with a good engine when they have one instead of throwing it away every iteration and focus on content and I believe DA2 has a great engine...let's hope they use it as the foundation to build an awesome, content filled RPG.

To most people, that isn't a good thing. I can understand why people were upset. Personally, I'm glad that it wasn't. While I enjoyed DA:O, the hype that it was some sort of spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate left a bitter taste in my mouth - it wasn't and left me disappointed.
In my eyes, its a step in the right direction.

There were parts of it that I thought were bad. I was overall disappointed but part of that was expecting Origins combat etc. I'm trying to replay at the moment and finding the combat much more tolerable a second time. The repition is starting to get to me though. I did like the dialogue, it wasn't as good as previous games but that's like saying fanfiction isn't as good as Matthew Reilly. Given the time they produced the games in there are many things they should have done better but I don't know if I'm comfortable branding it entirely bad or disappointing just yet.

As for the rest... well. Maybe you'll get disappointed with some features, but also is possible to like them after some time. I ended up liking the fast paced combat and new class-trees.
The new direction of the franchise is, unfortunatelly, clear to all of us. If you are a gamer who likes classic rpg, youll get slaped. If you are a gamer who like action and direct, simple fun, you'll probably enjoy it a lot, not paying too much attention to the obvious flaws.
Problem is, if you dont like the changes... those flaws grow in importance.
So, for me, it was very disappointing.

I think they focused too much on "innovating" the combat or getting the franchise somewhere and not enough on basics like "You need variety in your challenges". So in a sense, the juxtaposition of the good and the sloppy can be irritating. You know how when you have something you like, the presence an irritant can be especially galling and make you ignore what's good? You just focus on the negative because you're mad that the negative is even there--the bad things seem so pointless, which makes it all worse. I think something like that drives some of the rage people have. But I'm just guessing. Well, I'm not entirely guessing. That's partly my reaction: it's just my reaction isn't one of rage. And I don't ignore what I like. But I know what it's like to do that.
I have lots of reactions to DA2 depending on what time of day it is, honestly. My overview was 1) good game 2) not as good as Origins 3) hope 3's a lot better and a return to form 4) characters are still good 5) combat could have been great with better encounter design but at the moment is more of a mixed bag.

I would be expecting too much to hope that someone would roll back the years and make a proper DND rules RPG with todays graphics and voice acting (love the dragon age voice acting) but i think that is what a lot of people expect when they see a game like this in development.
Perhaps one day someone will have a crack at something that could be called a BGII sequel (imo the best RPG ever made) but i certainly dont hold my breath. At least the mass effect series is taking baby steps forward.

Which one?
Until DA2 I would have said Bioware, but not any more.
