A lot of disappointment (an extreme amount) and it is also bad.

If this game had nothing to do with the DA world or anything else known it would still be an average to bad game do to some really bone-headed game design choices.

Mostly disappointing, but a fair amount bad, as well, imo.

One of the bad aspects of the game is the ridiculous over-reliance on swarm tactics. When I've been engaged for 5 minutes in a drawn-out skirmish with an elite-level foe and half a dozen fodder-level accomplices, and I've got them down to just the elite and he's on the ropes, but I'm low on health & mana/stamina, and my healing potion and best skills are still recharging, and then two or three more elite, or near-elite, level foes and another half dozen or so fodder-level foes appear from nowhere, without warning or obvious explanation, and I get spiked ... well, that doesn't make me feel challenged as a gamer; it makes me feel cheated.

It also makes me feel cheated when class-based foes (i.e., other mages, rogues, and warriors) are able to use abilities against you that are (A) inconsistent with the enemy's character class and (2) not available to you or your companions who share that enemy's class. Case in point: mages who have a rogue-like stealth ability. WTF?

Mostly, though, I think the game's just disappointing, and I think even more than the short development time, this is the blame of the curious decision to almost completely rewrite the game. I appreciate that some people thought the combat action was too slow-paced in DA:O (re: two-handed weapon fighting, mostly), but I don't get why the whole game mechanics needed complete revision. It's like I took my Ferrari in for a tuneup, and when the mechanic was through, he handed me back a Ford Mustang.

Perhaps an even bigger disappointment, though, is really not just what they did with DA2, but an overall trend dating back quite a way, and Bioware is not the only sinners here. I'm talking about the general dumbing down of the RPG. Thanks to the success of MMORPGs like WOW and Guild Wars, the classic RPG is being replaced with the action RPG, which should probably be called ACTION (rpg), because the ration of action to RPG is growing on a trend to see the disappearance of the rpg aspect at all.

(Having said that last, I know there are a couple pretty good RPG games of late, but since I'm not in the business of trying to sell people on Bioware's competitors, I'll leave it at that.)

Mainly disappointing.

From any other developer it'd still be a decent game, but compared to the standards that we've come to expect from Bioware... it's bad.

That just means that we expect the other developers to make bad games.  That doesn't stop those other games from being bad.

Many aspects of DA2 are bad.  That is disappointing, yes, but I'm judging the game based on its quality, because that's all that matters.

I think it's more of a disappointment than a bad game. If a different company released this game under a different title, I'm sure it would have gotten a lot less backlash...but DA:O was a phenomenal title and BioWare has a reputation of being a phenomenal company, so it had a lot to live up to.

People know what BioWare is capable of, so it's hard to look at DA2 and not think of what it could have been.

I think it was poorly conceived, and sloppily executed.

It's a bad game, well written.

I thought the story was less than satisfactory but each to their own.

I find that DA2 do not longer qualifies as a RPG, at least for me, because the game missed many of the points that characterise a rpg game and instead delivered a kind of hack and slash game with a lot of dialogue. To be fair the backstory and the original idea were good, but the delivery of it was horrible. It is the only bioware game that i regret buying.

Tempting to echo that sentiment, but I don't - I do regret paying full price for it, but that was made up for by getting ME2 for free. So all's good, for now. :)

Dissatisfying. Good game. But as a sequel, it's just not good enough. This game would be the good start of a trilogy involving Hawke, though.

The numerous bugs i encountered was what made it a truly bad experience in my case. If we look past that, its mediocre and leaning to good in my opinion. The combat was horrible and the gameworld and story feels lazy and boring but it definitely had its moments, and it is in those moments that you forget its shortcomings for a short time, in those moments that you realize what a great game Dragon Age II could have been. It is a sad example of wasted potential IMO.

People, stuck in a groove,

This forum has become somewhat akin to a time loop methinks. The same old same folk, endlessly treading water, endlessly feeling the need to reiterate the negative. But with nothing to say that hasn't already been said a hundred times or more, yet imagining their dismissal of the game is somehow a constructive move forward.

I wish it was but no, here we go again.

The funny thing is you usually see the same drones on the other side in every thread too.   People stuck in a groove indeed.

It's not a bad game at all.

Disappointing, personally. The story was weak, unfocused, and the ending was a shambling mess. But it's not a bad game.

It depends from you personal view. If you want a deep RPG you will be disappointed. If you want to play an action adventure with some RPG flavor, you will be happy.

If you loved Origins its very unlikely that you will like the direction DA2 went. DAO and DA2 are complete different games for a different audience of player. So a comparison cant really be made.

Did you read the whole sentence ?
"Some people downright hate this game..."
It was addressed to those people who don't like this game so ... figure it out yourself.
