Now, I have this somewhat inconventional issue. I click the icon for Mass Effect in the My Computer section, and start the install. The screen pops up, giving me the "Install Game" option. I continue by clicking said option. It tells me to enter CD-key, and I do so. When I've done that, the install starts. It extracts the files, etc, etc, etc. Then, at extracting the data02.rar file (25.2% to be precise), the install freezes. Now, I've tried googling for anyone facing the same problem. Whenever I remove the disk, I get a "There was a Data error" message, or similar to that.

Here's my details:

Apart from the info found below, it's worth noting it's a laptop.

Manufacturer: Packard Bell

Processor: Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 430 @ 2.27GHz (4 CPUs),~2.3GHz

Memory: 4096MB RAM

Hard Drive: 626 GB

Sound Card: 2- Realtek High Definition

AudioSpeakers/Headphones: G3 Logitec Headphones

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.100226-1909)

It sounds to me as if you have run into the Drive vs. Disk conflict problem. I had to install across my LAN from a different, older PC with a "plain" DVD drive. Three or four or more games lately don't like my Plextor DVD burner drives.

Some people can copy the contents of disks to folders on their hard drives, and it works for them. Others have to borrow an external DVD drive to use.

Had this been ME-2, the EA Store digital download would be another option, but that doesn't seem to be a viable plan in the case of ME-1.

Try these instructions. Note that you will need to install the 1.02 patch before attemptnig step 7.

Does it freeze at the same point, or give a different error?

I am having the same issue with data02 not extracting. The method to extract it yourself does not work as it cause freezes during maual extraction as well. Any help with this issue at all would be great.

What brand dvd drive do you have and do you have an alternate external dvd drive you can try?? Have you tried installing on another computer ie in your house or a friends computer with a different setup? Someone posted here they got a different disc and if fixed the issue indicating it is a bad disc, but I don't know how true that is. Trying alternate drives and computers allows you to find out if it is a glitch in the disc in which EA should be able to exchange it for you, or if it is a drive/computer conflict.

I got a DVD-Super Multi DL drive (at least that's what the little note says).

I haven't been able to test if the game works on other computers, but I probably will. One problem is that I ordered the game online (not used), so Idk if I can go to EA for a refund or something.

Hey, I'm having a similar problem getting ME1 to install, the problem seems to be a specific portion of the Data2.rar file... I can't even by-pass it with the 'manual workaround' mentioned here: http://www.mmorpg.co...2054096#2054096
The problem seems to be that a specific file (or files, don't know beyond the first error) is corrupt and as a result i can't get data2.rar to unpack/export AT ALL (I can't even 'view' the contents of the .rar to transfer things across one file at a time...

My system spec are as follows:
AM2 5600+ (dual)
3gb DDR2 ram,
Nvidia Gforce 9500pro with 1gb on-board DDR3
Gigabyte GA-m52s-s3p mobo
AC-97 on-board sound (in software mode)
550w PSU
Pioneer (ata) DVD-R/RW
500gb Western Digital (sata) HD - also have a secondary HD, but i doubt that matters since it isn't the one that Windows is installed to...
OS: Windows XP Home SP3 (with dx 9c)

The game copy is a retail DVD version...

Have you tried tha manual install procedure from thwe instructions I listed previously?
Also have you tried creating an ISO image of the disk, and then mounting it as a virtual drive with a utility such as Daemon Tools?

already tried the 'manual' method you linked (if found it under a different link, but the method was the same). As for daemontools... Well I not really knowledgeable with things like that (have only used that program like once before, and that was under instruction)... I guess I'll give it a try though, not like i have anything to loose :P
