Nice to see you post again, Jeff. You are welcome to come join the chatroom anytime you wish. 2 hours before this post was made is generally, when the "rush hour" occurs.

Thanks, Phaedon. Don't worry, I'd never straight-up abandon the site or anything. I just got bogged-down significantly by real-life stuff, plus the anti-ME3 sentiment was getting a bit too close to boiling for my taste for a while. Seems to have died down a bit!

I'll definitely make it a point to get back into the chatroom habit soon!

I was looking at the list, and I think the conversations should be changed to Alpha Protocol style...where you have to make a choice within a set time limit, otherwise it just goes to a default response.

There are times when the games clearly want you to take your time and ponder the philosophical implications of your choices. Imposing a time limit would undermine that.

To speak nothing of those precious times when you've got a friend over but you're hurrying to finish a bit of the game before turning it off, then they say something and you respond, turn back to the TV and both of you immediately realize that the bizarre look on a character's face is priceless.

You might miss that strange smirk or inappropriate confusion or downright creepy stare if you've got a time limit to worry about.

That and to some extent they've already have the time limit thing with regards the 'Interupts', so no need for the conversation lines to have limits as well

Haha, Phaedon, I didn't know you posted this here! Glad you guys liked it! ^_^

Can't wait to see the finished product! Also, I'll be making some other goodies for this thread soon. Stay tuned! ;)

That's awesome to hear! More regulars there are always welcome!

About the conversation system, I love this topic because basically I have been thinking about it for a long time and how it could be applied to RPGs to give it better flow and tension. It's not an easy topic, though!

It doesn't necessarily need to be a default response, because then you'd be putting words into a character's mouth that the player might not necessarily agree with. But it would lend itself well if you have others around you that can speak on your behalf and continue the conversation if you stay silent for too long, leaving you to sit out until you actually wanted to talk. This needs to be taken into account for a lot of different types of conversations though: requests, simple banter, etc. You shouldn't let characters around you make major decisions about what you're going to do without letting the player disagree if he's not okay with it, for instance. It's a tricky tricky system to implement.

Another valid argument, but there could be ways of going around it. The character that poses such a moral defying question could end the conversation and leave the character time to decide. When they resumed the conversation again the question would again be posed and the character would have to decide. You could even take this time to ask other people around what they thought about the situation and take their points into consideration when making your final decision. This is just off the top of my head, there are probably other ways to do it.

You see where I'm going with this? It's hard:P

Alpha Protocol != Mass Effect !

This tidbit is, maybe without realising it, the focal point of this whole discussion. This type of conversation system wouldn't apply well to Mass Effect because Mass Effect wasn't designed from the ground up to include it. A game that would feature a system like this needs to have different design goals and actually plan for it in a way that still leaves the player with their feeling of agency intact.

Anyway, sorry for the long ramble, but I really like discussing this topic! If you want to keep talking about it, we can make a new thread about it or even do it in the chat!

Hey Iohanna, do you post on GameFAQs too? I'm a long-time member of that site and every time I lurk the ME3 board I keep seeing someone either with your exact name or one that's pretty close to yours. Not knowing if it's actually you is drivin' me crazy.

No, I actually never posted there. At one time I was considering it, but I never went through with it. :D

At least the second one works. I'll have to redo the first one from scratch, I guess.

Is this some kind of thing you're gonna put on the OP and then we can click the icons and we'll come to that specific place we clicked?

Fixed every single one, even the small problem with the rumors one. Now it's time to create the blogs, copy/paste info there, and then change the OP. Hopefully, I'll finish tonight.

EDIT: Thanks again, variobunz. ;)

That's it for today. "Characters", "Enemies", and "Locations" are supposed to get special treatment, which I can't give right now. I will be copy/pasting the current OP in the second post, and will start creating the new OP.

Wish me luck.
