Linear obstacle courses? Is that the term gamers now use for the platforming genre? Man, I've gotten old.

Why is everyone insinuating that Mass Effect had completely open exploration. Every level in which you fought enemies inside a complex was pretty straightforward?

What's up with all this "linear" bs lately?

I've felt that way for a long, long time now. The "ME2 was so much more linear" argument is just not one I can ever get behind.

The UNC worlds really tricked people, I guess.  They were very rarely put to good use as combat arenas though, and textures aside, the terrain had little variety.  The best thing about them were the skyboxes and some of the lighting effects.  Also, I geniunely think the mineral surveying was far worse than scanning in every respect except  the fact that it was truly optional.

Yeah, some of those skies were great. And a few of the worlds even had strikingly rich color schemes -- I don't recall the name offhand but one in particular which felt very "Mars-like" always gets me going. Red vibe to everything.

But that everything was mostly mountains and sure enough, once I reach that mine or outpost it's all the same again. A few synth beats, a few doors open, a few doors closed and enemies everywhere.

And yes, I so totally agree with you. I'll mine ten planets before I flinch much. The mineral surveying was only entertaining in that brief second's passing where I debated the merits of using omnigel to bypass the damn thig. My least favorite aspect of ME1.

Was it Maji?  I love the look of that one:

Oh. Oh yes. Oh yes, it was definitely Maji.

This... is pretty much the only part about "ME1 was better" that I can get behind. ME2 had some gorgeous places but I think I need another Maji.

I think I need to start a Maji petition. I'm sure it will work.

Some of those planets and skylines from ME 1 were always absolutely stunning.
They def need to bring that back in some way. It reminds me of that planet with the meteor shower always and the one with visible rings constructed by the Protheans.
And cant forget the planets that were literally about to smash into one another

Agreed, there were some pretty amazing vistas in ME1.   It's too bad that the actual planets all looked the same.

ME1 had such a distinct atmosphere to it. A much more sci-fi space-exploration atmosphere that makes me look back on it more fondly than ME2, even though ME2 is technically the superior game in most ways.  Maji is a great example of something that contributed to that atmosphere.  I played Mass Effect 1 in wonder and awe.  Mass Effect 2 didn't replicate that feeling, but it moved me just as much in a different way.  Hard to explain.

I totally agree. I miss driving the Mako and have such wonderful space art in the background :)

Actually it didn't.

You were just focusing inside the box.
Look outside of it.
It's still there.

You aren't seriously saying that ME2 had the same scale as ME1?  You didn't feel the expansiveness of space like you did in ME1, you didn't feel the sublime nature of the universe.  Or maybe you did and it was just me.:P

for me ME1 had a granter scale in the sense of more space, due to UNCs etc. and those had on some occasions "that's awesome" feeling. Sometimes it felt like an astronaute on their moon buggy to drive around with the Mako :)

ME2 felt smaller, to me, but way more unique. The universe looked a lot different less grant in scale but unique.

Alchera is the only planet in ME2 that comes somewhat close to the sheer beauty of ME's environments. Sure, ME's UNC planets are not exactly brimming with content, but years from now I will remember landing on Magi with the Mako before I remember any of ME2's cramped corridors.

Huge room with some beautiful aesthetics < medium-small room with many beautiful aesthetics even outside of that room

Yeah, ME2 is way better.
ME1 seemed mostly an empty huge room.

Well I personally enjoyed the empty huge room more.

For what it's worth, while I did feel like Mass Effect 2's scale was lesser than Mass Effect 1's I feel like it has more to do with having a greater familiarity with the series and the general scale of it. Of course thats probably just me.

Totally agree.

Two more (I'm sorry, I don't have the names of the planets):

This is a complaint that for some reason Miranda is the only character not listed in the "returning squadmates" list of the story section, in spite of an explicit statement that she will be back.

Regarding the current discussion of the ME1 environments: yes, I miss them greatly. The feeling of standing on the surface of a mostly unexplored, barren plant, with an unknown sun and unknown stars above you, that always embodied what space exploration is about for me and touched the space romantic I've been since I was a child and watched the first moon landing on TV in 1969.

Edit:
Fantastic pics, Graceyn!

I apologize if this has already been discussed, but I don't believe it has been. Apparently, Mass Effect 3 is set to have almost equal to both Mass 1 and 2 combined.

This again?  That line count was in reference to ME2 plus all the DLC:

_Vertigo_1: @VectorWarrior 40,000 lines of dialogue in #ME3?! Wow that's awesome!!

VectorWarrior (Rob Blake): @_Vertigo_1 Arg, not sure how many lines there are. There was around 40k in ME2 with DLC.

Yay for journalistic laziness!
