Does anyone still play Oblivion?

You wouldn't think that glass would be good for armor or weapons due to the fact that glass as we know it is usually fragile and easily breakable. As for the re-balancers not sure if I want to try them curreently. Only mods I've installed are the Un-official patch for Oblivion and the one for Shivering Isles.

That doesn't sound good. Have you installed the official versions? One of the startup screens should say 1.2.416 in the corner; mismatched versions of updates and mods can cause all sorts of chaos.Redneck1st wrote...
I've got a quest for folks and don't know if I should be asking here ore else where. Now I've noticed since I've installed the UOP for oblivion and the one for shivering isles my game seems to be reezing and crashing allot. Have anyone else had this problem? Wondering if I might have to re-install the game and if so will I be able to use my current character or if I'll have to start from scratch? Now it didn't crash at all before I installed the pateches and I'm not running anything else.
Any information for which you can give me would be appreciated.

Now mine says i.2.0416 in the lower left hand screen. I have just the game installed with shivering isles and Knights of nine installed. I than installed the UOP for both Oblivion and Shivering isles with nothing else installed at all.

It is odd that it's misbehaving so much, then; perhaps you might start a fresh game just for the purposes of comparison and see if that runs any more smoothly? If it does, it could be something in your savefile that's gone out of synch, otherwise it suggests a bug in the UOP: if that's the case, it may be worth mentioning in its official thread over on the Bethesda forums (don't have a link handy, but I'm sure I can find it if necessary...)Redneck1st wrote...

Edit: it's worth mentioning that Oblivion's never run entirely smoothly for me and has a bucketload of glitches and other problems, however many patches I add! In my experience it crashes on average about once an hour at the best of times... it's all part of the Bethesda experience.

I usually take the crashes as a sign that it is time for me to do something else than play for a while. At least if I have been playing a couple of hours already

Certainly a healthier attitude than getting infuriated by it, which has tended to be my approach!Eliamor wrote...

That depends on what you do after you've decided not to play
I still get angry if I haven't saved for a while when the game crashes (or if I die). I hate having to repeat things I've already done.

But seriously, once I figured out how to skip the main quest with the "jump over the temple roof" glitch, I was golden.....
I'm shocked that there are so many PC gamers out there, especially with Oblivion and ME-1/2. You guys must put alot of money into ur comps, cuz I haven't had a computer that cud run anythign bigger than Sims 2 in years.....I've even given up on Sims cuz my computer can't handle it anymore

Of course depends what kind of rig your're gunning for. But I find I can usually play perfectly fine all the games that interest me with a several years old computer. Granted, I kept the old 1280x1024 monitor instead of all that fancy fullHD stuff, but that means I can still play most games with decent framerate on highest detail settings, usually with AA and Anizotropic filtering, without state-of-the-art, new and expensive graphics card. Which generally means they actually look better then on consoles.... I guess you could put up a rig like mine now dirt cheap....

Do you know of any fixes for my situation? I have the GOTY edition on the computer and I logged about 70 hours (and I'm not even close to finished with the main story) but every time I try to load my save, the game crashes. I can't continue my game and I don't want to start a new one.

Naughty thanks for the links and I'll check them out. What I did for now as re-installed the game and so far it's been working good.
Now I'm working on a quest in Anvil "Siren's Deception" that the quest where the nord and imperial woman are preying on married men by having them meet them out at a farm and robbing them blind. So I cruse over to the Flowing bowl and walk in there and I'n not there a couple of minutes when the two ladies in question come in. The one pulls out a dagger and comes at me with it saying something about "you". If I dfend myself and draw my weapon and kill her it goes downl as murder even though I'm defending myself. And the bar tender than attacks me after I kill her. What is up with that there? Could it be that I"m trying to do things to early since its around 8am game tiem?
Well even trying to go there @ night she still walks in and goes psycho and comes at me with a dagger. I beat her to a pulp hand to hand against her and a dagger,. DIdn't go down as murder but it did kill the querst unfortunatly. Still curious if anyone knows why this happened ofr if it's happened to them?

Without further details, the only thing I can suggest is to go to your previous save: if you haven't made a permanent save, try the last autosave and see if that works any better. But as a precaution against this sort of thing, I tend to make a permanent save for about every hour of gameplay and also after especially difficult battles just in case I end up with a corrupted save.Weskerr wrote...

That might be one of the bugs mentioned in UESP's quest page: you could try the solutions mentioned there, otherwise, again, go back to the last permanent save before you started the quest.Redneck1st wrote...

Thanks for the advice vometia, but I'm afraid this means I'm doomed never to play my current file again. I tried reloading both my quick save and my autosave and they both crash the game. I never made any permanent saves
I should be able to get my money back but I probably won't. Selling a game with a functionality that makes it unplayable is justification for a refund.

Sadly, Oblivion certainly suffers Bethesda's legendary QA so is known to be "wobbly", to put it politely. Drove me nuts too.Weskerr wrote...

If you're using a PC, it will have a backup of the previous versions of autosave and quicksave in your saves directory (typically, from My Documents, they should be stored in My Games/Oblivion/Saves). The backup files are autosave.bak and quicksave.bak; copy them to, say, fred1.ess and fred2.ess, and they should appear in the savegame list when you go to load a game. If you don't see them, make sure Windows Explorer hasn't tried doing anything clever with the file extension!
If you're really desperate there are possibly other ways of rescuing your game, but try the backups first.
Edit: oh, and whatever game you're playing, a new, permanent save for every hour of gameplay (or however much you're prepared to lose) is always a good idea!

hmmm....I just hate having to by joysticks or USB controllers and such. I'm not really going with games that involve the mouse. And when I mean my computer can't run games, the only game I've been able to run without too many hitches is Civilization 4 and (up until last year) Sims 2. Then I had to stop playing Sims 2 because I started getting this wierd glitch where hair textures were showing up in place of the neighborhood landscape, very creepy......

It seems my old save files were deleted after I had tried creating a new game to see if the same problem occured. This happened maybe...2 or 3 months ago. I think enough time has passed for me to enjoy a new game and also while knowning that I have a backup plan just incase this happens again - I'll take your advice about the permanent saves. Thanks again vometia.

Well, I guess that's the difference between us. Me and gamepads don't go well together. Give me a keyboard and a mouse over it anyday. Can't use that damn thing in any reliable manner.
As for joysticks? That was what, 20 years ago? Had one for Atari, Commodore, Amiga... never needed one for my pc. Unless you're into flight simulators or something.

Also in regards to the misc. quest I think that the one for which you get from Kud-ei in the Bravil mages guild is the worst as far as rewards go. You go through all that garbage to save her friend in the dream world for a lousy scroll. If I knew that I wouldn't have done the quest. Didn't even get to keep anything from in there. Talk about getting the royal shaft job this one was it.
