Because of its deep, robust rpg elements and because it is flat out fun for most people

I am an Elder Scrolls fan and believe that Bethesda's focus on emergent gameplay has the most potential of what any RPG developer is doing to advance the genre, but this made me cringe a little.

Oblivion (without mods) was a poor RPG. More accurately, Oblivion's RPG elements were broken unless you modded them or put self imposed limits on your character, which is basically LARPing.

That is (in the context of video games), to invent and imagine things that are not addressed by the game so it better fits the character. It's no different to people pretending that Hawke did something during the interludes, or that the Templars don't attack him for being a Blood Mage because he's buddies with Cullen & Aveline.

Or, to link it to a specific mechanic, imagining that the specialisations actually had a real story that happened in the background so that they could unlock, rather than just being there for ease of use. Like Hawke somehow became a Blood Mage because he had the innate ability, or he was taught, or found a book on how to do it... but it's just not represented in the game.

In terms of Oblivion, Lockpicking was a good example. Any Novice could lockpick any lock, so people just imagined or "roleplayed" that they couldn't to "fix" the problem. There's plenty more, but that's a common one.

It's still a very large and fun game when modded. It has some very creative and enjoyable quests/gameplay but it does lack in it's RPG aspects.

I agree with most of what you said. Oblivion had many flaws, but the end result for me and many others was pure fun. Even on the unmodded version, which I play even though i play on PC, the elements were deep. Were some aspects broken? Sure. But their foundations are there, in the game, and imo not completely horrendous. The positives of it all far outweigh the negatives, for me anyways

Personally I thought Oblivion was about as inspiring as a damp piece of cloth. And not damp in the "happy-happy" sense, either.

Apart from the apparent lack of any meaningful artistic direction, the fact that Bethesda only hired four or so voice actors is my major gripe, and one which has prevented me from getting farther than a few hours. Thoroughly ridiculous to encounter the same person again and again with such frequency.

I would play OB again if I could get the ruddy thing to play nice with mods on my PC. It keeps crashing.

Fable 3 was better than Oblivion. Not as good as Morrowind, but a colonic with a jagged metal pipe is better than an un-modded Oblivion.

There really needs to be some sort of equivalent of Godwin's Law that states that any discussion involving Oblivion will sooner or later turn to making unfavourable comparisons with Morrowind.  How about "Mudcrab's Law"?

Well, it's true that Fable 3 wasn't awful. But I wouldn't compare it with Oblivion; while Fable 1 was arguably still an RPG, Fable 3 has (d)evolved completely into action/adventure game territory.

More devoted Elder Scrolls fans will eventually begin discussing the magnum opus that was Daggerfall.

I am not one of these people.

I'm actually replaying Oblivion right now. Hadn't touched it since at least 2007. I'll be playing it until Deus Ex HR comes out.

almost 100 hours in.
I just helped and honest guardsman named Garrus deal with a corrupt guardsman and encountered a warrior named Sten
Why do these names seem familiar?

I'm planning on playing it through it before Skyrim comes out. I've had the game since it came out and I've tried going through it about half a dozen times. I always get to a pretty early point (Weynon Priory if I remember correctly) then get bored and play somethig else. This time I'm going to get through at least the main storyline, Knights of the Nine, and Shivering Isles. What mods should I get to be able to stay interested?

Depends what you want.  In terms of rebalancing the game's scaling, levelling and so on you might want to look at FCOM: though it takes quite a bit of installing since it comprises a number of mods that are complex in their own right and involves some fiddling about to glue them together.  If that's too daunting (which I don't say lightly: it really is a pain, though it's worth it IMHO) any one of its major components will give some major improvements to gameplay, namely OOO, MMM or Fransesco's.

I'm slightly behind the times in terms of where's the best place to download them from but hopefully the names will give you a start if that sort of thing sounds interesting; you may also want to check out UESP's list of recommended mods (and list of lists), which contains some important user-made patches: linky.

I'm not sure if Nexus has the current versions of the mods I mentioned; I had a quick look and its listing of OOO and MMM seems to be a version behind, though 1.34 and 3.6 respectively were betas last time I looked and I'm not sure if they were completed, so 1.33 and 3.55 may be the most up to date, though I really can't vouch for that.

Well it's up to the mod's creator to update it so if your not sure just check the mods home sit.

What mods should I get to be able to stay interested?

A little over 6 months ago, I was in a similar situation.

Up to that time I had only used a few small mods like Vampire Aging Disabled, a body replacer, etc.

I wanted to try a new experience with Oblivion and I had read about a few overhaul mods like Oscuro's, and saw some of the amazing screens from people using OBGEv2, but it all seemed complicated to install.

I was able to get help from the official Bethesda Oblivion mods forum members, and here is what I would recommend:

1. research, look at screenshots, read comments and decide on a list of all the mods you want to try
2. based on the descriptions and install instructions, post on THIS FORUM your planned steps for installing these mods and your list of mods
3. revise install plan according to feedback from the experts
4. install

After doing exactly this, a few hours later I was playing a completely new and (to me) magical game.

Here are some of the mods that I found to be essential (I would not go back to playing Oblivion without these)

essential mods that do not change gameplay...

  • 4GB patch
  • OBGEv2
  • ENBSeries Shaders
  • Qarl's Hi Res Texture Pack
  • Tamriel NPCs Revamped (finally all the NPCs will no longer be ugly)
  • HGEC Body Replacer
  • Elaborate Eyes
  • Ren's Beauty Pack
  • Bananasplit's Better Cities
  • Unique Landscapes
  • Oblivion Stereo Sound Overhaul
  • Atmospheric Oblivion
  • Symphony of Violence
  • Oblivion Crash Prevention System
  • Oblivion Stutter Remover
  • Vampire Aging Disabled
  • Windows Lighting System
  • COBL Races

Essential Mod Utilities

  • OBSE
  • BOSS
  • OBMM
  • Wyre Bash
  • COBL

Essential Mods That Affect Gameplay (improve balance or otherwise affect gameplay)

  • Duke Patrick's SCA Combat Archery
  • Duke Patrick's Basic Hypothermia
  • Deadly Reflex
  • Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul
  • Martigen's Monster Mod
  • Francesco's
  • FCOM (this allows you to combine OOO, MMM, Fran's and Warcry)
  • COBL Real Hunger
  • COBL Real Thirst
  • COBL Real Sleep Extended
  • Less Annoying Magic Experience (L.A.M.E.)
  • Supreme Magicka
  • Thievery
  • Ashes to Ashes
  • Enhanced Economy

Fun Magic Mods
  • Supreme Magicka
  • Less Annoying Magic Experience
  • Midas Magic (I don't think this one works together with the other two, but SM and LAME work fine together)

Here is a list of all the mods I have installed

I'm currently in the midst of an Oblivion, and as always I'm completely ignoring the main quest, which is rather dull. Instead, I'm aiming to become the most proflic serial killer in Cyrodiil - so far I've rendered much of the Imperial City devoid of life, and now I'll be moving on to the outlying towns and villages. My MO is to sneak into people's houses at night, then murder people and harvest their souls for my enchantments (I'm using the Black Azura's Star mod). If not that, I'll dump a pile of weapons in the middle of a town, then cast an area of effect Frenzy spell that causes everyone to pick up a weapon and begin slaughtering each other.

Great fun.
