Samara related topic!

Cannot remember if we had this conversation in the old thread but I brought this up to a friend just now...

So it occurred to me while stuffing my face with easter egg chocolate that Spacer Shepard is the only one with a parent (see: mother) still alive to "pass judgement" on their choice of partner.

Thoughts on this scenario? (Yes, assuming Samara is the aforementioned partner.)

The Hannah Shepard / Samara meeting would always be the most awkward in my mind of all the possible meetings. It would be like bringing your girlfriend home for dinner with your parrents, only that your girlfriend is actually older than your own mother.

There is also the cultural barrier. I never imagined Hannah as being xenophobic but she did grow up in a time before humans met aliens. And while decades have gone since first contact, I always thought she would be rather reluctant about the idea of her child running off with an alien.

As for her judgement on Samara? I think she like Samara, but be rather suprised at Shepard over his or her choice of partner.

We gathered 130 letters and art of the LI's from fans all over the world over the course of six days and turned it into a 200 page book. We presented it to the BioWare team at PAX, and they have promised to go through it.

Now, a digital edition of The Book, the very same book that is in the DEV's hands, can be yours.

http://k003.kiwi6.co...q2/the_book.pdf

Alternatively, http://kiwi6.com/file/0f67f2raq2.

Thanks for the support everyone! Keep up the questions about the LI's on Twitter and Facebook! Keep up the questions about The Book until we get some feedback on our feedback! And hang around, 'cause we're not done just yet!

I agree with LV.  It would be a little awkward.  Yes, Samara is elegant and classy, but she's still technically older than Hannah.  Samara is of a different species, and inter-species dating is still a controversial thing in the setting.  Lastly, I don't know if Hannah would approve of the severity of the Code.  She might be concerned with how it might affect Shepard in any way.  Would she think that it allows Shepard and Samara to have the kind of closeness she thinks a relationship ought to have?  Despite all of this, it would still be very interesting to read fic about this.

EDIT: Also, Visii, thank you so much for your hard work in representing the concerns of the fans of ME2 LIs.

I think I should go back from my initial statement and say that I think Hannah might like Samara as a person, but she does not approve of her as a partner for Shepard. As you mentioned with the code, she would have doubts about the relationship being viable.

Hm, nice to hear your thoughts about it :3

Once I've mulled it over a bit more I'll most likely use it for a one-shot.

Thankfully the Code is not around post-Dreaming After Death so I've just got characters to work with...

Wait before we move on from this subject of Shepard's mom Hannah

It's been awhile since I played ME1 with a Hannah Shepard child, but anyway long and short of it is I got the impression that Hannah had been cheating on Shepards dad with ol' Zebaleta (is that how it's spelled). So no doubt that would find it's way into any sort of unhappy feelings toward Shep partner.
But then once again I'm also injecting my own personal status into this all, I'm hands down the black sheep to my parents. I can never please them, if I started sh!tting solid gold and gave it to them it they'd find a way to be upset with me over it. They both have their heads up my older brother @ss he's Mr gold which he can't stand. My mom and dad are divorced, but man did I really manage to p!ss them both off a few years back with that one act.

I've yet again rattled a cr@p load more off here.

On Sheps mom, she'd probally not be to thrilled about her kid being with an alien not to mention the age of Samara. For me though the one LI that Shep's parents would not ever approve of to me is Jack ohhh man that would be such a disaster.

Mondo wrote a shortfic about this.  It's true, Hannah and Jack do not get along, and Jack is not the kind of girl mom wants for her boy.  Hannah sees how happy Jack and her son make each other, though.  She trusts in her son that there must be some redeeming quality in Jack.  Hannah and Jack at least come to an agreement, that there's something special about Shepard.  They also agree that "Shepard women" must be strong for each other, as much as they are strong for themselves.

EDIT: She actually wrote two shortfics about this.  The first is about a confrontation between Hannah and Jack...

There's a lot of interpretation space for Hannah Shepard, since we don't get to see her a lot. So I've pretty much just got to go with my own ideas just like you have your thoughts about what would happen, Gears.

For example, Papa-Shepard died when Ash was about...six or seven. So your interpretation wouldn't work because there's no one to "cheat" on :)

But yeah, part of the idea is that Hannah would feel some measure of concern over a) Samara being an alien and B) the fact that she is literally over 20 times older than Shepard. (30 x 26 = 780)

I don't picture Hannah being hostile in any manner, just...concerned. After all the bull**** Shepard is put through, she wants her child to be happy and have something that resembles a stable life for once.

And Jack, oh god...someone would need to record that.

Ya know this is one of the things that really made ME so great. We got our own ways that we can intemperate the characters, and not just our Shepards.

Anyone ever wondering what grandma Shepard would think of Sheps partner?

Oh and did ya notice Javik's out fit colors? Red and the other is Black?

First person to compare Javik to Samara gets thrown out the airlock. :P
/half-kidding

And I know, I like that about the series as well. :3

In other news, I filled out the ME3 meme on Deviantart: Direct attention to questions 8 and 10

Grandma Shepard? I'd imagine that would be even more awkward than Mama-Shepard.

Unless Shep's gran is the awesome kind who smacks would-be robbers, curses out small minded people and generally leaks coolness all over the place.

Excerpt of my upcoming one-shot "Chasing Ghosts" - Shepard is reading through a datapad on Spectre candidates and talking to Samara in their kitchen.

- - - - - -

“I still have to meet the only human on the list, Karis Redd. Combat engineer, excellent marksmanship, showed she was able to hack and sabotage anything under pressure during the War. Also served with Hyulluck and Areveth,” Ashira raised a brow, “guess I’m getting everyone who survived Hackett’s missions.”

Samara tilted her head, “then they are no doubt highly skilled individuals.”

Ashira nodded again, setting the datapad down, “looks like it.”

“They will be in good hands.”

“Maybe.”

“You doubt your ability?”

“I might be a little too wound-up for them to learn anything other than how to be a paranoid war veteran 101.”

“You are a skilled, versatile professional who has critical knowledge to impart. You will be able to test them like no other will, or would. Your personal troubles never detracted from your prowess, Ash.”

“Really?”

“You took out targets in a far bolder manner. But you appeared to keep your wits about you, employing tactics even with your emotions running amok. You just became more brutal to your enemies, not an easier target.”

Ashira sighed softly, “good to know.”

Samara paused momentarily, catching the soldier’s eye, “though I would not recommend using such methods.”

The soldier managed a light laugh, shaking her head, “yeah, I’m not going to tell them that charging an enemy who’s already firing at you is a good idea.”

Samara raised a brow, “unless you had the forethought to pick up the enemy’s shield?”

Ashira grinned, “at which point you proceed to bash his face with it for being stupid enough to drop it in the first place.”

“And then what? Charge through several more troops or use the shield as an improvised hammer?”

“When did I do the second one?”

“I believe that was the mission on Noveria.”

“Oh...oh right, yes. I ran out of bullets.”

“An impressive feat by itself.”

“Very funny.”

Ashira I'm so looking forward to that one shot. Only I'm now wondering what species those other characters were who were being nominated for Spectre status? I take it they are you MP characters?

Oh and did you download the PAX fan book yet? I have I went straight to the Samara section and Your letter was so well done. Bravo.

Happened to notice that your letter, my letter, Bromanov's and a Colossally Disappointed Fans. were the only Samara letters. I liked the part in your letter "Samara fans don't seem to be in that great a number and we're not as vocal as other fans. Kind of like the character we like so much :P"

So true on this. Wait I take it back I'm a rather vocal person and I've been both hated and liked for being extremely loud in stating my opinions on things. But ehh I'm just one man, one Samara fan who only wanted Samara, amongst the overwhelming hoards of Liara, Taili, Ashley, Garrus, Miranda, Kaidan, and Jack fans.

Yes, Areveth and Hyulluck are my Asari Vanguard and Salarian Engineer respectively. Karis Redd is the name I gave to my friend's Human female Engineer because she usually goes by the handle "Crimmson[blank]" or some variation of the colour red.

She doesn't name her characters, unlike me :P But she was pleased with the name.

I did download the fan book and felt a warm sense of pride that so many fans were talking about their favourite characters.

Though if I had seen examples of other people's letters, I would have said a lot more. I think. I probably would've written more. I'm not used to writing these kinds of things ^^;

And ehh, we need a loud Samara fan for once :P

I already play an Asari vanguard I named Areveth...

What do you guys name your Asari? :P

I take names of past people or characters that I then meld into new names.

For example, my Asari Vanguard is Cleota Z'Hartra, a combination of Marta Hari and Cleopatra.

I forget what I named my Adept, somehting like Therine Caiena, a play on the name of St. Catherine of Siena.

Y'all realize that even Liara is older than your parents, right? Why would this be such a big deal?

Because while Liara is technically older than Hannah, she is still young by Asari standards and still have a sense of youth in her. The samme cannot be said of Samara.

True, but if we're going by relative age, then I don't think Samra would be much older than Shep's parent's relatively.

She's almost a martiarch, which basically puts her in the second third of her life, so she's somewhere between her (relative) 40's and 50's.

Shep is mid-30's, so his/her parents are probably AT LEAST 50.

Exactly.

Which is why I would feel the Samara/Hannah meeting would be the most awkward of all of them.

I understand how Samara could be the most awkward, I think that maybe Jack would be a complete nightmare, Nightmare being very different than Awkward.

I'm picturing a nightmare of a meeting between My Shepard's Mom and Miranda (which she's never an LI for my Shepard, other than the first time I played ME2 and I did a hit and run with Miranda) anyway my god Miranda and my Sheps Mom, (I tend to inject much of my mom's personility into my Shepard's mom) that would be a nightmare I can already hear Hannah telling Miranda "You so perfect for my son. I know you'll control every part of his life. Its the way things are supposed to be. I've tried to control his life it's back fired on me just letting you know."

It would be a disaster and end in an explosion of fights and Hannah would be forever p!ssed at her son for breaking up with Miranda, every girl after that would get the sh!t treatment from Hannah hoping to destroy things ASAP!

I was working on my fanfic some the other day and I had wrote a line of dialogue where Samara was cussing, and thought "Oh cr@p I can't have her cussing I don't think she's ever cussed once that I remember" So I deleted that line

I had Samara cussing at her own confusing feelings she has for Shepard, just wondered if ya all could ever see Samara cussing at something?

I cannot picture her doing anything of the like in the slightest, even if her emotions are overwhelming and conflicting I doubt she would vocalise it in such a manner.

On an unrelated note...

Current music I am using to write this oneshot.

If that doesn't take you to the section I'm using it's at 1:17.

Sad, quiet and calm with a faintest sense of dread (Shepard's nightmares.) And maybe a tiny bit of hope. ;)

Why do you like Samara so much?

Also has anyone else noticed that the glow in Samara's eyes in ME3 are kinda gone? In ME2 her eyes had a nice glow quite often for some reason.

I like Samara because of her grace, elegance, and unwavering determination.  She is a sad, lonely figure.  I have a love of self-sacrificing characters.  Samara has a very strong sense of duty.  I like the interesting differences between Samara the Justicar and Samara the Asari.  I like how, despite being a distant person, she has moments where she displays warmth.

I haven't noticed that her eyes lack a glow.  However, looking through my pictures of ME2 Samara, I do notice that a light source is constantly reflecting off of her eyes in conversations with her.  Maybe this is intentional, to make her silvery eyes look even more luminous.

I'm pretty sure it was because there was a lot more care put into eyes and animation in ME2. The eyes were definitely a lot better; shiny-ness.

And I like the "serious, mystic warrior" and "lady of war" type characters, I was extremely interested ever since I first saw her character trailer.

Also of note when you first meet her, there's no posturing at all, she just casually finishes her business before even taking notice of Shepard and calmly lays out the situation as is.

She's also one of the few characters I feel is Shepard's equal, if not more than their equal.

Not sure I covered the biggest reasons for me but...there ya go.

Agreed.  In-game I think the only characters/squadmates that seem like Shepard's equal are Samara, Wrex, and Saren (I know bad guy...but he was a very good at being a bad guy).
