That these characters can die isn't the heart of the matter. That the games are all meant to be self-contained, and that ME2 was an excursion so that new players wouldn't feel alienated from ME3's resolution of the Reaper threat, means that nothing would ultimately matter, because nothing would meaningfully carry over.
When all of the player's decisions are ultimately reduced to an intangible meta-mechanic, instead of showing up on the battlefield to help, it doesn't matter what the player, or Bioware, does.
I'm sad because my favorite characters are trapped in this wonderful setting that, unfortunately, ended with ME3.
