The Kinect implementation as it stands for ME3 right now is kind of...unimpressive. I mean, I guess it's alright, but look at the potential with Mass Effect! They use haptic interfaces combined with holograms to control all their computers and electronics...motion controls would be completely awesome for navigating the galaxy map, or rotating and scanning planets...Bioware cannot have missed this potential, and I hope they're working on more. And I say this as a PC player who doesn't even own ME2 on Xbox and has no intention of buying a Kinect.

Err, whoops. That last line isn't meant to incite a platform war, I meant it to underscore my enthusiasm for how cool Kinect implementation could be.

The only problem I can see with having most of the gameplay be on a controller, and then having some of it be with motions using your hands, is that you would need to put the controller down to do the motions, So it would have to be outside of intense events or combat of any kind....right?

Well, true. I will be the first to admit I don't know the Kinect's capabilities for detecting and processing motion and hand guestures, but obviously for galaxy map and planet scanning those are during down time. You could still open doors by making a swiping motion with your hand for example, and releasing the controller with one hand would sort of mimic Shepard releasing the grip of his weapon with one hand at the same time. Yay immersion! Little things like that.

Edit: of course, if the Kinect has poor responsiveness this could also be immensely irritating. Sitting there in your living room pawing at the air like an idiot while Shepard stands with his face up against a door would be, well...silly, to say the least.

Hand motion wouldn't come into play during combat. It'd be for out of combat things like the galaxy map, or hacking(I guess, but I'd prefer NOT for hacking).

Combat would be strictly voice, and using the controller to direct WHERE you want the order to go.

"Garrus, Concussive Shot!" and aim your reticle at the enemy you want him to shoot it at.

"Liara, Singularity!" and aim it at a spot in between enemies so they all get effected.

"Garrus, STOP THE GODDAMN CALIBRATIONS!" and aim directly into Garrus' eyes.

Opening doors with Kinect would actually be pretty cool, but I doubt they'll go that far.

I like the Galaxy Map though. You'd imagine that that's how it operates. Shepard using his hands to navigate it.

Now we can do that.

It would still work, Javier.

If we take a queue from ME2 - when you go to the galactic map, you see Sheppard standing there and even have an animation of it expanding towards you, encompassing entire screen. So, to do that with motion control would only be a natural extension.

Kinda like when you take your gun apart in Ghost Recon Future Soldier, how the gun expands and separates.

It'd be cool if you move your hands apart and the Galaxy Map comes closer to you.

Like zooming in or out on a multitouch interface, like iPhone for example. Would be cool to be able to rotate the galaxy map finally as well; in ME2 with all the plot flags sticking up all over the place, sometimes it can be really hard to see where you want to go. Being able to zoom or rotate could alleviate that, and be more interactive in the process, which is almost always a plus for video games imo.

Actually, one of the EA guys did mention Kinect use of the Galaxy Map as something that "maybe" hasn't been revealed yet.

Around the 6min mark iirc Posted Image

I don't think he explicitly says it will use the motion control feature rather than voice recognition, but it's what I'm hoping for Posted Image

Voice Recognition for the Galaxy Map sounds redundant.

I think it'd make more sense if physicality was involved.

Just to clarify my previous post: i'm also hoping they use motion control for the map Posted Image

The thing I don't get is why they're using Kinect for a voice control feature. Endear had the same thing with more complex commands before Kinect even existed.

Funny thing about this...we probably could pull it off today....just need someone to build an enviroment theater with projections screens 360 and on floors/ceilings...you would need to make it so they could be back projected and capable of allowing air to pass...then develop a complete envirment fan system (like a wind tunnel, skydiving platform) and allow the wind to hold the player in place...provide some great noise cancelling headsets that also pump in the sound...it could work, right?

What you don't think they'll have it ready by the time ME 3 ships? Really, just trying to point out that tech isn't that far off - just have to come up with a better way to implement than my hair brained "wind sphere" idea...

Oh for the love of actual PC gaming PEOPLE!!!

Do we really need more superfluous code interfering with our gaming experience?

Keep that TV detritus away from the PC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like I said in a similar DA2 Thread: If Voice Recognition is the only implementation for kinect (like it was in the e3 demo), then it's a slap in the face of everyone who bought this thing. I can get a microphone for 3 bucks and it has the potential to do the same thing. Using kinect for that is like buying a pc to cut your salami with the optical drive.

By the way: the voice recognition (as shown in the demo) was slow like hell, I hit 50 times a button in the time it took to make one choice, so not only is the implementation of voice recognition as the only gimmick of kinect a disgrace for kinect but it's also slowing the game down and in my opinion making it worse.

Btw: I would feel stupid hearing myself say "You son of a ****" just to hear Shepard say "Nobody stabs me in the back Udina, nobody!" Oo

As I mentioned in another thread, now that the official SDK has been released, it wont be long until its reverse engineered so that the Kinect VR implementation can be used with just a standard headset, instead of having to spend the money on that gimmick.

Actually, it would be priceless if the Kinect was used as part of the romance scenes. I can just imagine some guy air humping the floor when his girlfriend walks in. Posted Image
