Which Character Grew On You?

I hated her my first couple of playthroughs because, well...you know.
But after awhile, I started thinking about why she was doing it and I came to respect her character.
I still wanted to kill her, though.

Other characters - varric, aveline, merrill - are easy for me to love instantly. Fenris I've never liked. Anders... I liked him in DAA so he went from favourite character to most hated in a single playthrough.

It pretty much went like this for me (stream of consciousness incoming):
1st playthrough:
Anders: Hmm.. I wish more of the male squadmates had dark hair/eyes.. that's a lot of whining about templars and the Circle.. omg, he's possessed?!.. Shut up about the templars already.. He lied to my PC about why he needed to gather that stuff.. Damn it, Anders, I can't believe you.. you're so dead.
Aveline: She's tough. She jokes with my PC. She stuck by my Hawke's side in the end. She's pretty awesome.
Bethany: Dead in the first few minutes.
Carver: Whoa, the devs really nailed down the whole 'I'm being overshadowed by my sibling' thing.. are you seriously throwing a tantrum and going to the Templars, Carver?.. Although, I like that he made a decision and stuck to it despite it meaning leaving the PC's side.. aww, sibling love, he turned out okay in the end. I think he's well-written.
Fenris: Great, some cliche, moody, ex-slave elf.. please don't start moaning about how terrible your past was.. omg, shut up already about the mages.. you mean to tell me my PC helped you with all of your crap and you still turned against her? I so don't feel badly about killing you.
Isabela: Seems confident, fun, sexy, and interested in my PC.. I can't believe she didn't tell my Hawke about the relic.. oh, she came back, that's so sweet, I hope she genuinely loves my PC.. woo, she loves her!
Merrill: Great, the Liara of DA2. Shoot me now before she starts talking about how young and inexperienced she is. Blah blah blah, she's so naive about humans and city life and blah.. blah.. blah.. eww, you can romance her? ..I can't believe she caused the death of her whole clan.. I suppose it's a good thing she sided with my PC in the end, but she needs to stay way over there.
Sebastian: A little too boyishly cute and too pious. He is a well-written character, though, I think.
Varric: I like that twirling the arrow.. nice voice.. chill attitude.. fun.. all around awesome guy.
2nd playthrough:
Anders: Grrr.. still angry about the Chantry. And then Justice killed that mage girl. You're too unpredictable, you're so dead.
Aveline: Still awesome.
Bethany: Sweet girl, a good sister, sorry to see her be sent to the Circle and the effect it had on Hawke's mother, happy she survived the end.
Carver: Dead in the first few minutes.
Fenris: Let me try to look past the moody elf thing, because his voice is pretty darn nice. That laugh was kinda cute too.. and that smile.. that was quite the glowy smooch.. hey, he's showing his more vulnerable side, it's really touching.. Hawke's kinda heartbroken he just walked out like that, though.. but he showed up after her mother died, maybe he does still care.. interesting info from his sister about his past.. woot, open feelings discussion time.. aww, that ending is so sweet.. he's a much deeper character than I thought.
Isabela: Makes an awesome friend in addition to lover
Merrill: Eh.. um.. you're not getting that Dalish tool this time.. I can't remember, but I think she died alongside the Templars. Whatever.
Sebastian: Same as 1st PT.
Varric: Still awesome.
3rd playthrough (completed as of a week or so ago):
Anders: Okay, I'm over the Chantry.. he's actually kinda cute and Justice is an interesting.. extra.. interacting with Justice in the Fade was pretty cool.. wow, that was one hell of a kiss, he has officially gone from 'cute' to 'manly deliciousness' and I may need to watch that again (several times).. woot, an 'I love you', reminiscing about Alistair right about now.. yay, he moved in!.. Hawke's not happy he didn't trust her, but she's sticking by him.. dammit, Anders.. but he's gonna live 'cause she loves him. As with Fenris, I misjudged this guy.. he's much more complex and genuinely tragic than I initially thought. And I think he's my favorite DA2 romance
Aveline: Still awesome.
Bethany: Dead in the first few minutes.
Carver: Still a good character, imo.
Fenris: I can't believe he sided with my Hawke even though she spared Anders and defended the mages.
Isabela: Makes an awesome friend in addition to lover
Merrill: Eh.. I guess she's cute in a little kid sort of way, but definitely not in a romancing sort of way. Her attempt to be a hostess and offering water was amazingly endearing this time around (I can't recall my reaction in the first two games).. I rather respect her for trying to do what she believes is the right thing for her people, though my Hawke doesn't.. hey, she's actually pretty handy in a fight.. the "naive and innocent" adult is still not the type of character I'm fond of in general, but Merrill.. she's not so bad. Better than that, I guess, she's a real sweetheart.
Sebastian: Same as 1st PT.
Varric: Still awesome. I'm still laughing at the "sorry, Mother" line.
TL;DR: After 3 full playthroughs (can't believe it took me this long to complete them):
Anders:
Aveline:
Bethany:
Carver:
Fenris:
Isabela:
Merrill:
Sebastian:
Varric:
Edit: Wow, this is the longest post I've ever put up on the BSN.

He hated my guts during my first, but then when I ditched Anders and got Fenris in my party I really liked him.

Same here.
However, you should definitely give it a go at least once. I made the mistake of making a male char on my 5th or so playthrough. I was so used to hearing the same lines spoken by a woman that hearing them from a man was weird for quite a while.
I suppose Carver has grown on me a little in my subsequent mage plays. The greatest change though was a character shrinking (opposite of grew?) on me. I liked Anders a lot on the first play and he was my first DA2 romance. As I've gone on though, he's gotten more and more irritating. I rivaled him once, and now that his rival ending is fixed, I will definitely be doing that again.

I know what you mean. I tried to play as male hawke on more than once and I just can't do it. The furthest I ever made it as maleHawke was act 2. XD And yes Anders has also s"shrunk" on me too.

Carver irritated the heck out of me and I delighted in tweaking him at every opportunity. Then he became a Grey Warden and turned into a stand-up guy. I felt kind of bad for slagging him earlier in the game. I still do it, though, because snark!Hawke is just too much fun. And Aveline was right: he would have made a terrible guard at 18.

Fenris has shrunk on me. I've been saying how it's possible to be a LI-fan without tearing down the rivals from day one, but the more I play with Fenris in the party, the more he ticks me off. Sorry, Fengirls, he just doesn't do it for everyone, and mostly, he doesn't do it for me. Might just give him to Danarius this PT.

Like a weed. I first went "oh great an elf." then "well better an elf than an abomination." than "oooh elfy! "
And that was before the game even shipped XD He just kept getting and more interesting to me afterwards.

So Aveline. At first I was meh. But then she grew up on me and became my second favorite character in DA2.
In terms of NPCs, Gamlen and I am still pissed off that my Hawke is forced to let him rot in lowtown.

As a result, I quickly got Fenris as a rival (though I didn't manage to completely max it, I think he was around 3/4 rival)...
And never, ever have I wanted to kill a videogame character so badly!!!
Seriously, rival Fenris was a major pain in the rear end! There's just no pleasing, or simply communicating with him. Everything you say is taken as an attack / insult.
I hate it when people automatically jump to the wrong conclusions, and you constantly have to say:
"No, I'm sorry, that's not what I meant, you misunderstood. No, I didn't meant to imply that you're too stupid to understand, perhaps I just didn't express myself properly. Want me to say I'm sorry again? There you go... I'm sorry... You're not feeling any better? WELL, WHY DON'T YOU JUST TAKE THAT FRAKKING SWORD OF MERCY, AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR..."
Okay, so that pretty much summed up my first relationship with Fenris. I hated him with a passion like never have I hated a character before. But he had some of the funniest banters, and was an amazing tank. So I kept him around.
Anyway, for some reason, when the time finally did come to kill him (he attacked me for siding with the mages), I oddly felt a bit sad... Like some part of me actually LOVED to HATE him, and while I did feel the urge to kill him, I didn't actually mean it.
Then, some Fenris fans began to say that he wasn't the completely closed-minded jerk he was if you became friends... But was actually very sweet and kind to you.
So I thought "Okay, okay, I'll give him another chance, and even try to romance him... But I'm doing it as a blood mage, so that in case I still don't like him, at least I'll have gotten the satisfaction to have made the little wolf my mage's ****!"
Around the same time, I also discovered a wonderful little comic on DeviantArt by Gone-Batty called "Turning Point" gone-batty.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d3d031b ... And the "Fenders" pairing was starting to make me kinda appreciate Fenris...
And wow... Were his fans ever right! Fenris as a friend is a completely different character!
Now it's:
"You're so cute... Oh please stop, you're making me blush! Don't worry,
I'll teach you how to read that book... Awww... You'd like that? Oh! And I'm so happy that you love the sword I found... Looks good on you! How
about I make tea, and we paint each others' toenails while you tell me
all about your days in Tevinter... Then I'll show you that nice
electricity trick Anders taught me..."
So, while he still isn't my favorite DA2 character, he's now pretty high up on the ones I really love list!
Anders, Varric, Isabela, Aveline, Merrill, Carver, and Bethany I loved from the start. Anders especially (He's right up there with Alistair and Zevran).
The only one that I never liked and still can't stand is Sebastian! Each time he opens his mouth, I just want to punch him! Lol! But I love his voice!
Hawke: "Sebastian... Shut up! And keep talking!
Sebastian: "What? How do I..."
Hawke: "Nevermind..."

Fenris because I was like "Why can't I change you mind!!!" the blinders he keeps on his eyes can be a bit grating, but then again so can Anders.

I got off on the wrong foot with Aveline at first since she was married to a templar that threatened Hawke's sister, and later spoke disapprovingly of my #1 LI, Leliana. After hearing her delightful banters with Isabela, I found her hilarious. After her quest in Act 2, I found her adorable. And after her quests in Acts 1 and 3, I respected her. By the end she was one of my favorite characters.
So much THIS! I didn't like her at first, but by the end of my first playthrough Aveline was always in my party because she and my warrior were BFFs

I disliked the whole concept of Fenris.
"Oh, he's broody and tortured, he has white hair and tattoos that glow and a giant sword and super-strength and AMNESIA!"
In short, he could not be more "Final Fantasy" if he tried. Even Final Fantasy isn't as Final Fantasy as this. Gideon Emery has a great voice and gave an excellent performance, but he also raised the FF-o-meter that much higher, since..well...you know.
Let's just say he grew on me.
lol same here on so many levels. Then I actually used him on a runthrough, and the depth of his character and decisions gave him character of his own, he's still not one of my favorites, but hot damn I like him.
I can't really specify any one character in this that grew on me, they all did. Unlike any other Bioware game, the team you accumulate isnt some ragtag band of heroes and villains forging their way to some earthshaking evil on a mission to save the world (or galaxy), DA2 was a bunch of friends who go to the local tavern and play cards every friday, visit each other on occasion and slay horrors and demons every few months.
They grew on each other over the years, as opposed to still having never spoken face to face and snipping at one another during the final battle. That, in and of itself grew on me, because I didn't just feel like I liked and trusted them, I felt like they liked and trusted each other despite me.

I liked Aveline, Varric, Fenris and Bethany from the start and was never disappointed in them. Seb is all right, not much strong emotions here, but no negatives either.
Never cared much about Carver and still don't.
Liked Anders in the very beginning, liked him less and less as game progressed, hated him in the end (no relation to his Big Surprise, he just acts like a jerk in my opinion) and still do.

Bethany grew on me after my second non-mage playthrough: I still like Carver more, but she made a decent foil. Fenris was the only one who didn't grow on me.

But now, on my 3rd Hard run, I'm actually listening a lot more to her, how she feels so bad for their Mother that she's a Mage, how scared she is of the Templars. I'm also going to make my Deep Roads less optimal, just to let her become a Warden, so I don't have to kill her, or ship her off into the Circle.
I liked Merrill the first time I saw her. The Irish accent, the cute fumbles, the nicknames she gets from the others. But now, I'm starting to get a little bored with her. I might try a Rivalmance with her, see how that works out.

Aveline: solid strong interesting believable character - loved her!
Bethany: sweet but a bit of a goody goody - died early in game. I might have lost patience with her eventually but didn't get the chance to find out
Carver: One of the two characters I didn't care for at first but grew to love immensely! By the time he showed up at the end I wanted to leap into the game and hug him!
Fenris: Liked him a lot but found him a little too abrasive. As a mage it was fun to go the friendship route.
Isabela: Hated her the first playthrough but 2nd time through I "got" her personality more and came to appreciate her. Loved her banter with Aveline. Their rivalry seemed to turn into genuine respect despite their diffrerences. I shipped her and Fenris
Merrill: Liked her and felt protective of her at first but felt completely betrayed by what went down with the Keeper and the pride demon.
Sebastian: he added a lot to the game for me so I loved that he was in the game -- but a complete headache for my Hawke. She completely lost patience with the preachiness. Was a bit torn between going rivalry or friendship because I was NOT a fan of the chantry but I couldn't see him as a good ruler for Starkhaven either.
Varric: He's just incredably awesome in every way. I didn't understand what he saw in my Hawke because she was not cool enough to hang out with someone like him! lol
I guess to answer the original question, Carver and Isabella were the two that I didn't connect with at first but really warmed up to.
