My first run was with a rogue so I didn't take Isabela anywhere and then that little snot up and ran off with the book. I gave her to the Arishok the second time. Then I played as a mage and dragged her all over the Free Marches with me to open chests and discovered that she is, actually, a really interesting character. I wouldn't say she's my favorite but she's much deeper than I thought.

I did the same thing with my dual-wielding Rogue and she buggered off at me at the end of Act 2 and I was so upset because I did like her, I just found her skills redundant.

One of the things I liked about the Aveline/Donnic storyline was that it showed such a different side of Aveline, that surprised me but which I was able to believe.

Fenris grew on me, the first PT I was barely tolerating him but the 2nd PT I rival-manced him and that's when I saw that he was kind of awesome .... and funnily enough the more I played the more I annoying Anders became, so he had the opposite reaction! Merril is still to grow on me, but I do find her more interesting as a rival than as a friend ... but still not a favourite.

I didn't think much of Varric's design when I first saw it so I wasn't too pumped about using him, but fortunately I used him enough to realize that he's actually pure awesome. He's never out of my party anymore. Easily my favorite character out of all the companions.

I would have romanced Varric in an instant if I had the option (and I'm seriously lamenting the lack of it) - there's something to be said for a guy who isn't brooding, angst ridden, or insane. I'm a big fan of well-adjusted people that have their heads on straight.

Carver. First impression I thought he was a total nob. Sullen and bitter as all hell. My God it was grating. But after I stuck him in a party with Varric, Isabela, or Fenris I thought his party banter was awesome. Also, if you pay attention the eh, "ladies of the night" in Lowtown make passes at him and he actually answers back (just like Isabela does) with some really funny comments.

Carver: You know, Fenris, I have a tattoo.
Fenris: You have a what?
Carver: A tattoo. A lot of us got them before Ostagar. It's a Mabari. For strength.
Fenris: Does it curse you with the ability to reach into a man and tear out his insides?
Carver: Uh. I can make it bark.
Fenris: Please don't.

Hilarious.

Isabela grew on me. I absolutely hated her first couple playthroughs. Now she is one of my favs. All the others have kept their place on my like/love-o-meter as when I first met them. Merrill still being my least fav.

Huh.

A few moved around a bit.
Sebastian I really started to like.

Anders and Fenris just annoyed me more and more.
I simply got fed up hearing:
MAGES SUXS!
NO TEMPLURS SUXZ!

It got old.
Badly.

Carver.  He was tiresome, but I've grown to love this resentful, whiny ******, and his snark towards the mages ("Another delicate mage flower" and banter with Anders - hilarious).

Also Fenris - I thought it will be a rivalry at the first sight.
Maybe because I didn't need him this much in the first playthrought, he became friends with my Hawke, and struck me as sensible and... normal - maybe a bit too normal.
So, in friendship I didn't seen his ****y side too often. In rivalry he was pissing me off, but It made me understand him better. I settled with friendly neutrality with him.

I liked Varric, Bethany, Isabela and Aveline.

In my first playthrough I also liked Merril... but after the second run I developed some kind of irrational hate for her. Now I think she's the worst of the bunch.

Varric is a charismatic fella with very well designed background and dialogs. I specially appreciate that he is depicted as some kind of imaginative bard with sense of humour. Although there should be more dialogs, chatting with him thorugh the game really creates the feeling of gaining a great friendship (No clue of what happens if you rival him).

Bethany was refreshing after Carver. I found her a bit bland, but much more detailed than the others. The variations in her future are impressive (it was a surprise for me that we are able to change her career). Also, I tend to like good natured characters, and Bethany is representative of those.

Contrary to common opinion, I found Isabela a deep character with complex motivations. I see her as a tormented child who hides in alcohol and obscene humour. A little glare to her past makes this clearer.

And Aveline, ah, my loved Aveline ^_^ It's a pity we can't romance her. It happens as with Varric: gaining friendship with her is a great path, and really feels natural, earned.

Isabela and fenris. This happen when Isabela/Fenris/Aveline were int he party.

Isabela: So, Donnic was in the Rose.
Aveline: He was not!
Isabela: Easy, big girl. He wasn't shopping for himself. You're lucky to have a man who wants to please you.
Isabela: But, maybe you could indulge him more. Are there areas of intimacy you haven't explored?
Aveline: Why? Why do you give me these doubts!
Isabela: Aveline. If you shove your thumb up his ass, I win.
Fenris: Laugh

Thats was priceless lol, I like fenris so much now.

there is another one that chimes in I think its Aveline its : Yes. Don't.

Ok my personal growth would be Carver annoyed me so much in the beginning. But later it was meh he is just tired of being a supporting Char

Anders: Sort of annoyed me at the start, later it was the only thing he ever talked about, It was like yea.... if you couldn't heal the party you wouldn't be in the group right now....

Aveline: Liked her from the start, wanted to romance her, then the whole Donnic arc started and was like yea...  moved on the Isabella.

Bethany: Wish had a sister like her, nice sweet (to bad my first playthough she died (almost loaded an old save to prevent her from going but then decided that this was my only real chance of having her die before i never let it happen again.) but other playthoughs circle, liked her there.

Carver: As above, granted the chip on his shoulder at times is as big as his head but meh.

Fenris: Broody elf with good reason but ends up being a good guy

Isabella: Honestly love her, liked her no lack of self confindance fun to be around. Then after the romance it was really great.

Merill: Sorry i can't think of her as somone who needs to be protected from herself.

Seb: only 1 playthrough recently so, meh... i think he is just confused hald the time he wants to be a prince the o ther half a chantry guy. He just can't make up his mind imo

Varric: my friend best bud, for life. honestly he's like that guy that everyone likes and for good reason. Doesn't try to screw with you and can take and deal jokes. And I don't have the heart to rival him at all...

Fenris - I've been swinging between sort of liking him to outright dislike, but now I've been put in the "like"-zone after I used the douchy "I TOLD YOU SO" dialogue option during his final Questioning Beliefs and he justs laughs. The boy can give a lot of crap, but he does take it as well.

And... even writing this makes me cringe, but Merrill. In the first playthrough, I didn't like her. Her cuteness felt forced and artificial, like her writer was trying way too hard to make me think she was cute. I thought she was an utter moron who lived in her own head-bubble completely separated from the rest of reality, because I could not otherwise believe some of the things she said, seemingly in earnest. Let's just say, I've since changed my mind and she is now one of my favorite characters and my second favorite LI.

Aveline: first playthrough I just didn't get her at all. She seemed to randomly like or dislike the things I did. I think part of this may have come from the fact in my first play through I killed Wesley, thinking she wouldn't go through with it. End of the day, she DID try and give Donnic an easier patrol (even though she later changed this), so I thought Cullen's rumour was right

Then in later playthroughs she just grew on me, I saw her as Hawkes 'best friend'. Nothing specific made me change my mind, I just guess she felt more 'real' to me because she wasn't just hanging about waiting for Hawke to come calling for the lastest adventure.

Isabela, for reasons others have stated. In the beginning I was like "ah, and you're the jiggly one" and basically blew her off. After I started making myself use her in Act II (characters backlogging in levels makes me twitchy) I realized that there was more to her than that.

This thread also reminded me that during the demo I originally gave Varric the side-eye too. Idk why the beginning make me think poorly of his character but I was kinda like GTFO at first- the rest of the game did better by his character apparently.

As the game progressed I became more tolerant (resigned) to Fenris' PoV on mages since I realized the *entire game* was busy lining up evidence contradicting my arguments. I've come to realize that, against his entire life experience, (and G*****n Kirkwall), I was only providing my opinion, my sister (who is functionally AWOL for 3/4ths of the game, and . . . Anders . . . on "mages don't need to be locked up and/or Tranquiled forever" side of the debate. Yeah. . . If I were Fenris I would have put me in a corner.

Honestly, Anders is the character that has grown on me. I've always had a lot of respect for Jennifer Helper's interpretation of the character and how much he had changed since the events of Awakenings, but because of his actions I had a very difficult time getting past the anger I felt towards him. I was finally able to spare a rivaled Anders and was surprised to find myself feeling sorry for him, because he clearly had lost control of himself, and he admits to it. That was a side of Anders that I had never seen before and I'm glad I got to see it. He is such a tragic and brilliant character.

Gamlen and Leandra
At first Gamlen's just the cranky, resentful uncle, but in act two you realized how much Leandra means to him. My opinion of Leandra went way up in the story when you hear that she visits Gamlen every week, that she did not forget her little brother after everything he has done. My heart was riped when she died. The depth of her love for her children and family made me hope that my own mother would one day say those words to me.
In act 3, Gamlen became my favorite cranky uncle.

Of all the characters. I think Merrill grew on me the most. When I did my first playthrough, I actually thought that I would go one game by BioWare where I was actually utterly annoyed by everything a companion character had to offer me. But in later playthroughs, I don't really know what happened, but I began to like her. I also love the party banter she has with Isabela and Varric, the three get along very well, and it's refreshing to hear nice, quirky conversations for once. I think Carver grew on me too. He totally surprised me at the end of my playthrough. I was shocked when he actually assisted me instead of fighting against me like I thought he would.I was a little touched by the action, to be completely honest.

Cullen: Became highly likeable compared to Origins
Merrill: Was looking for the "kill blood mage"-option at first, but eventually she grew on me and was rivalmanced in Act III.

NPC: Gamlen, Saemus, Viscount Dumar, Charade, Athenril, and Orsino before he went all Harvestino.

Companions: While I loved all the companions in DA2, the ones I enjoyed the most were Merrill (friendship romance path always) and Varric
