EA to make digital content only for Origin
Electronic Arts has pulled Crysis 2[/i] from Valve’s Steam. While players will still be able to access Crysis 2[/i] games as normal, players looking to purchase a new digital copy of the game will have to look to Origin — EA’s own digital distribution client.EA is ready to go toe-to-toe with big name e-shops like Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Steam. While they still intend to support the digital vendors, they also intend to provide exclusive content through Origin that won’t be available anywhere else.In keeping with this, BioWare has announced that digital copies of their upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic[/i] will only be available through Origin. Additionally, digital pre-orders for Battlefield 3[/i] have yet to show up on Steam — and they probably won’t — and EA’s recently released Alice: Madness Returns[/i] remains unavailable for purchase through Steam.
Players looking to get their hands on some digital copies of upcoming EA titles — like FIFA[/i], Madden NFL[/i],Battlefield 3[/i], Mass Effect 3[/i], and many others — will only have access to them through Origin.

if this is true, then it is preposterous. pure anger and dissapointement can only express my feelings about this.
So in the end, there's no way that Mass Effect 3 will ever be on Steam huh?

I'm not sure how accurate this is, but according to EA it wasn't actually them that pulled Crysis 2, it was Steam themselves that did it because of the following:-

"Steam has imposed a set of business terms for developers hoping to sell content on that service - many of which are not imposed by other online game services. Unfortunately, Crytek has an agreement with another download service which violates the new rules from Steam and resulted in its expulsion of Crysis 2 from Steam."

Pretty much the case, getting the boxed copy from my local brick and mortar store, don't know what to make of other EA titles I plan to get (BF3). Though I've learned never to be an early adopter (T-Mobile G1, then the myTouch 3G came out) so I'll just bide my time...

The only way I see this changing is if there are massive complaints by the community, or if Origin flops and ends up deterring users from using their products entirely.

A good 98% of all the game I buy are digital and I haven't bought a boxed game in at least 2 years that I remember, I also buy my games from Steam when possible (personal preference). Forcing me to switch over to something else doesn't personally bode well with me and I presume many others... I know I won't go out of my way to use Origin or go to a store to pick up a boxed copy of a game to avoid it (ME3 Collector's notwithstanding).
