Here's my problem:
DX9 Mode works fine. no problems whatsoever. BUT...I have been trying to play this game in DX11 mode since release because I have a DX11 card and I paid for DX11 gfx in this game. I'm a stickler that way.

When I do try to run DX11 mode, I run the launcher - click play. The game loads up, I see the cutscene movie, I skip it ;) I get to the menu. From here, if I click resume I see the loading screen which goes for a while, (when starting a new game, the exact same thing happens.)then i hear the music stop and ambient sounds start playing, they they stopand then I get a "Dragon Age II has stopped working" error box from windows. The info from that error window is below(APPCRASH data) as well as the game's own log file.

***** This is not new, this is not part of a patch issue. *****
***** This has done exactly the same thing since day 1. *****

What I have tried:
  • Every nvidia major and beta video driver release since the release of this game and 2 beta and major versions available before release of this game.
  • Since my motherboard has an nvidia chipset with nvidia sound, the above updates also updated my sound drivers every step of the way as well.
  • Changing every available video config option in the game at just about every resolution.
  • Uninstall/Reinstall of the game (three times)
  • Running as administrator (and all other compatibility options)
  • Turning off Aero
  • Updating .NET
  • Updating MSVC Distributable
  • Updating Windows
  • Completely reinstalled Windows 7
  • Every other suggestion in every other post i could find that even that seemed even remotely related.
Nothing changes, it's the same every time.

I have run out of ideas. Please help!
Thanks in advance!

What does the Sticky have to say about driver 175.xx?

It's no damn good in DA2. Real simple.

What brand is your GTS 450? Did it come boxed with any sort of extra programs? What programs do you have running in the background while you game?

There are things you can run like anti spyware scanners and especially CCleaner which can avoid APPCRASH errors from crap interfering with programs it's worth running them if you have not already.

it's a Zotac. It came with a cd. I just installed the nvidia driver. their site just links to most recent nvidia driver. they have no package of their own.

I have tried running 4 different nvidia drivers on a brand new clean install of windows 7 and had the exact same issue.

Something i forgot to mention, Civilization 5 works on in DX11 on this machine quite well.

thanks for your input.

Unfortunately "this game works" isn't really a compelling case since different games have different engines and requirements and react differently.

Did you forget that list of things running in the background? Are you just running the base windows programs? What antivirus/anit spyware programs do you use? Any sort of gaming enhancement programs? Nvidia programs?

I have a feeling something on your system is having a clash with DAII

Edit: Also makes sure you download and run CCleaner and a registry repair program. Something somewhere os not configured correctly and it's having a hissy fit when you try to play your game.

sure, that's all well and good but again I will mention that I tried this after a brand new fresh install of windows7 with nothing other than a video driver and DA2 installed.  A real retail Win 7 Ultimate disc from a real box. I didn't even hook up any of my usb devices, nor did I install any software other than NVIDIA driver software. So there's no chance of this being spyware of a registry problem.
as mentioned above, the only virus scanner on here is 'Microsoft Security Essentials' which was not installed right away after a windows 7 install.

I only mentioned Civ V for comic relief, it won't run DX11 on very many systems either ;)

thanks again

According to Bioware's System Requirements, the 460 is the least powerful Geforce for Dx11, making the 450 below the Dx11 requirement. (Although that's not "why" the game isn't starting -- it should try, but just not perform well enough.)

Agreed there. That is mentioned in the 'Recommended' requirements and
since the game log shows the DX11 graphic system as having started with no errors I assumed the game would run.

Having said all that, this is still one of the best RPG's I've ever played. The DX9 graphics are nice enough too. I just really want to see the extra fancy stuff ;)

thanks again
